Character Analysis: Sonic the Hedgehog

“What you see is what you get! Just a guy that loves adventure! I’m Sonic the Hedgehog!”

Before We Start…

This blog will reference nearly all Sonic material, as long as it’s canon or canon adjacent. If a show, comic, or game isn’t part of the main canon, it will be included, provided SEGA approves it and doesn’t heavily contradict the lore. Here is the list of sources this blog will use and why:

  • Games, IDW, Prime - They’re all canon so…
  • Sonic Chronicles - Given that the game used to be canon, Sonic in this game acts the same as he does in canon.
  • Sonic X - Sonic’s co-creator, Yuji Naka, is the anime’s executive producer. Takashi Iizuka is also the show’s supervisor.
  • Sonic Movies - The movie universe is connected to Sonic’s multiverse, thanks to Shadow Generations.
  • Sonic Channel stories - Ian has stated that these stories are canon. Shadow Generations also references a Sonic Channel story. Even if that weren’t the case, the stories are published and maintained by SEGA themselves.
  • Sonic Speed Simulator - Nibroc Sarkaria, who works on the game, has said that Speed Simulator is considered to be canon (somehow) and that SEGA has to approve of their stories and they can’t make stories that conflict with canon. If they do, SEGA forces them to rewrite the story. Because of that, it will be used for supplementary information for lore.
  • English and Japanese scripts - Regardless of what language the games are written in, SEGA of Japan has to approve of them. This is why the series currently has the mandates it does. This means that both the English and Japanese scripts can’t do anything that SEGA doesn’t approve of. Because of that, both are perfectly valid to use for feats and abilities, and both will be taken into account for this blog.

Other versions of Sonic that are radically different from canon, like Fleetway, SatAM, and Archie are not included in this blog. With all of that out of the way, let’s begin.

Background

In the games, very little is known about Sonic’s origins. He was born on Christmas Island and was gifted with incredible speed. He left his home to pursue adventure and would find himself in various conflicts with Dr. Ivo Robotnik (aka Eggman), a mad scientist seeking world domination. Ever since their initial encounter, Sonic spends most of his life thwarting the evil scientist’s schemes, all while dealing with side threats from other villains along the way.

Combination Color Powers

Sonic can merge multiple color powers together at once to create more powerful variants.

Final Color Blaster

Sonic merges multiple color powers to amp his physical strength.

Rings

Ring-like objects that hold great power. Rings contain a unique form of energy called Ring Energy, which can be used to power machinery, boost stats, or rejuvenate someone’s stamina and abilities.

In most Sonic games, rings are used to protect characters from a deadly blow. While this is often seen as a gameplay mechanic, there are many instances throughout the series that suggest that these are how rings operate in canon. Whenever a character is hit by an attack, they lose the rings they’re carrying and have to collect them before they disappear.

How many rings Sonic can carry at once varies per game. Some games like Frontiers suggest the limit is 999, while other games like 06 make it possible for him to carry 99,999,999 rings.

Travel Rings

Giant rings that act as gateways to other universes.

Time Stones

A set of mysterious stones that have the power to control time. With these stones, Sonic can freely travel through time.

Forcejewels

Gemstones found throughout Maginaryworld. They can be used to create barriers, steal items, protect items from being stolen, etc.

A full list of Forcejewels can be found here https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Forcejewel

Gems

Various gems that can be equipped to Sonic’s shoes to grant him special abilities. The following are a list of abilities Gems grant him:

  • Tornado: Sonic creates a tornado with the green gem
  • Slow: Sonic slows down time with the red gem
  • Mach Speed: Sonic uses the blue gem to boost his speed
  • Homing Smash: Sonic uses the white gem to stop in midair during a homing attack
  • Gun Drive: Sonic throws the sky gem and chases it through the air to reach new heights
  • Thunder Guard: Sonic uses the yellow gem to create a shield that attracts rings. If the shield is destroyed, Sonic can create another one.
  • Scale: Sonic uses the purple gem to shrink in size.

A video showcasing all Gem abilities can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NnVsrlEjwQ

World Rings

Seven magical rings that bind together the world of the Arabian Nights. They hold immense power and represent several emotions like Joy, Pleasures, Wishes, Prayers, Sadness, Rage, and Hatred. Sonic has used the World Rings to create storms and transform into a form called Darkspine Sonic (See Transformations).

Paradox Prism

A gemstone used to create realities called Shatterspaces in Sonic Prime. With shards of the prism, Sonic can freely travel between Shatterspaces and use them for a boost in power (See Transformations).

Chaos Emeralds

A set of mystical objects said several times to contain infinite power. Depending on the type of thoughts and motivations of their user, the Emeralds will generate positive or negative energy. Sonic can utilize the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds to enhance his abilities and transform into a more powerful state called a Super form (See Transformations). In addition, if a Chaos Emerald’s power were to be drained by an outside source, Sonic can use his positive thoughts to recharge the Emeralds.

If the Emeralds are in close proximity, Sonic can call them towards him.

In addition, the Emeralds have shown the ability to protect Sonic from mind control and can restore him back to normal if his body is altered in any way.

The emeralds seemingly have the ability to guard against outside forces disrupting its energies.

Super Emeralds

Chaos Emeralds enhanced by the power of the Master Emerald. They presumably have the same properties as the Chaos Emeralds and grant Sonic the ability to transform into Hyper form (See Transformations).

Abilities

Spin Attack and Dash

A jumping attack where Sonic spins rapidly in the air to cut through objects and opponents. Sonic can also perform a Spin Attack while rolling on the ground and can even charge up speed for such an attack with an ability called the Spin Dash.

Homing Attack

Sonic performs a mid-air Spin Attack that homes in on opponents. Powered up versions of the Homing Attack allows Sonic to multiple targets at once.

Somersault

A somersaulting attack that can be used to harm enemies. The somersault gains a fire attribute with the Flame Ring equipped.

Skid Attack

Sonic performs a somersault and then slides across the ground to attack enemies.

Insta Shield

A shield Sonic creates in mid-air by rapidly spinning to block attacks.

Stomp

While in the air, Sonic rockets directly downward, descending in a crouching position. Upon landing, he’ll release a destructive shockwave that damages the nearby surroundings and enemies.

Light Speed Dash/Light Speed Attack

The Light Speed Dash allows Sonic to travel along a trail of rings at light speed. The Light Speed Attack allows Sonic to rapidly attack enemies at light speed.

Super Peel Out

A technique where Sonic runs in place to build up speed before zipping off.

Boost Mode

A state of enhanced speed in the Advanced series. In this mode, Sonic moves fast enough to leave behind afterimages.

Sonic Boom

A state of enhanced speed in the Rivals series. It basically functions like the Boost technique.

Boost

Sonic propels himself with a blue aura around his body that protects him from collision damage. He also moves a lot faster when boosting, blowing away anything in his path.

Blue Tornado

Sonic creates a tornado by rapidly spinning around an enemy.

Magic Hand

Sonic shrinks and entraps enemies in small spheres that can be thrown as a projectile.

Sonic Cracker

A landmine Sonic throws into the ground.

Sonic Drive

A technique where Sonic throws a ring into the air and homes in on it with a spin dash to damage enemies in his path.

Sonic Storm

A technique where Sonic releases a shockwave to damage enemies.

Sonic Wind

A technique where Sonic summons a whirlwind to an opponent’s position to damage them.

Whirlwind

Another tornado based technique Sonic uses in Sonic Chronicles.

Sonic Heal

Sonic vibrates his molecules at supersonic speeds to heal himself.

Chaos Spear

Small energy spears Sonic can shoot at enemies.

Chaos Control

The ability to warp time and space or empower oneself with the aid of a Chaos Emerald. The more Chaos Emeralds a character has, the more enhanced Chaos Control will become.

Teleportation

The main use of Chaos Control is to teleport either the user or an object through space. This can work across dimensions or be applied to large objects. Supposedly, Chaos Control’s range is limited, but the exact limit is unknown.

Warping

Chaos Control can be used to warp at high speeds.

Time Manipulation

Chaos Control can slow down or stop time. While the limit of the time stop’s duration in canon is unknown, Chaos Control can stop time for up to 90 seconds in Sonic X. Somehow, Chaos Control can be activated in White Space despite there being no time in it. Interestingly enough, people that know Chaos Control also seem to be immune to its effects these days.

Chaos Regeneration

An ability that heals or prevents someone from dying. Sonic uses the technique to heal Chris of his injuries in Sonic X. Sonic and Shadow also used this to save Cosmo, but ended up turning her into a seed. Poor Tails.

Soul Energy

A form of energy used for special attacks throughout the Storybook series.

Speed Break

An ability that uses Soul Energy to temporarily enhance Sonic’s speed.

Time Break

An ability that uses Soul Energy to slow down the flow of time. In Sonic Generations, Sonic is able to use this ability without using Soul Energy.

Soul Surge

An ability that uses soul energy to perform powerful attacks.

Danger Sense

Sonic’s quills tingle before impending danger.

Skills

Customizable abilities that enhance Sonic’s performance. There are hundreds of skills, but most of them tend to enhance movement speed and acceleration, boost strength, increase the soul gauge, grant invulnerability, resurrect Sonic, etc.

A list of skills can be found here https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Skill#Sonic_Storybook_Series_2

Emerald Powers

Special abilities granted by the Chaos Emeralds and magical aura surrounding the Northstar Islands. This grants Sonic the ability to clone himself, see invisible things, turn into fire and water, create vines, and slow down time. Supposedly, these abilities can only be used while on the Northstar Islands, thanks to its magical aura, but we’ve seen Sonic use these abilities off the island, so take that as you will.

Cyloop

A technique where Sonic creates a light trail. By enclosing said light trail, he can either launch enemies into the air, generate rings, or gain infinite boosting.

Phantom Rush

Sonic moves fast enough to appear in multiple places at once while attacking enemies.

Sonic Boom

Another technique where Sonic releases shockwaves to strike enemies from a distance.

Wild Rush

A technique where Sonic zigzags in midair to hit an enemy.

Homing Shot

“That looks like a homing shot!”

A technique where Sonic generates ten spheres containing shockwaves that homes in on an enemy at once.

Loop Kick

A technique where Sonic flies around once in a loop and dashes towards an enemy with a shooting kick.

Spin Slash

A technique where Sonic spins around in a ball maneuver to create a circular shockwave.

Recovery Smash

A technique where Sonic quickly recovers and spindashes towards an enemy that attacked him.

Resistances

Mind Control

Sonic resisted Dark Gaia’s possession because he is “too strong to lose himself.” The Chaos Emeralds are capable of negating mind control as well (See Equipment).

Petrification/Transmutation

Sonic can break out of the Gargoyle Djinn’s petrification. Sonic used the Chaos Emeralds to cure his Metal Virus, which transmutates organic tissue into metal (See Equipment).

Sealing

Sonic repeatedly entered and escaped Cyber Space through his own power. Sonic could also break out of Null Space, a dimension that was closed off from all dimensions.

Cyber Corruption

Sonic absorbed and endured extensive amounts of corruptive cyber energy throughout Sonic Frontiers. Cyber corruption can paralyze people, limit some of their abilities, and pull people’s souls into Cyber Space. By the end of the game, Sonic is able to master and convert his Cyber Corruption into power.

Existence Erasure (Debatable)

Super Sonic was unaffected by Darkseid’s Omega Beams. Sonic was also seemingly unaffected by Time Eater’s erasure, but you can debate whether or not the ability was used directly on Sonic.

Transformations

Werehog

A form Sonic gained in Sonic Unleashed after absorbing large amounts of Dark Gaia energy. While the werehog form makes him slower, he gains enhanced physical strength and can stretch his limbs for extra reach. He can also create shields and enter an enhanced state of power called “Unleashed Mode.”

Hyper Mode

A sort of pseudo super form the Chaos Emeralds grant in Sonic the Fighters. In this state, Sonic gains a boost in stats and access to more powerful attacks.

Dark Sonic

By drawing out negative energy from fake Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transforms into Dark Sonic. In this state, Sonic gains a boost in stats and becomes more erratic.

Darkspine Sonic

By drawing out power from the World Rings of Rage, Hatred, and Sadness, Sonic transforms into Dark Spine Sonic. In this form, Sonic can fly, create infinite soul energy, and warp the entirety of the Arabian Nights.

Excalibur Sonic

Sonic uses the power of Excalibur to encase himself in magical golden armor. In this state, Sonic can fly, generate soul energy, and gains enhanced strength.

Shatter Sonic

By drawing out energy from the Paradox Prism, Sonic transforms into Shatter Sonic. In this state, Sonic gains a massive boost in stats.

Super Sonic

By drawing out the full power of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic. In this state, Sonic is granted abilities far surpassing those of his normal self, including flight, greatly enhanced physical abilities, invulnerability, and enhanced chaos powers. While this form is powerful, maintaining this form consumes extreme amounts of energy, limiting its duration. In order to increase the form’s duration, Sonic needs rings.

Positive Energy Aura

Because Super Sonic uses the positive energies of the Chaos Emeralds, Super Sonic can pacify evil creatures by essentially beating the evil out of them. Sonic used this to restore Chaos and the Mother Wisp.

Starfall Super Sonic

An advanced super state of Super Sonic, achieved by completing Master King Koco’s trial to temper his cyber corruption into newfound power. Starfall Super Sonic has the same abilities as Super Sonic, but to a greater degree.

Super Sonic Cyber

An advanced state of Starfall Super Sonic, achieved by letting the Cyber Corruption fully subsume him. While Sonic’s abilities are greatly enhanced in this state, it puts a massive strain on his body and can only be used for a few seconds.

Hyper Sonic

(Artist: Nibroc Rock)

An enhanced super state granted by the Super Emeralds. Hyper Sonic should realistically have the same abilities as Super Sonic, but to a greater degree. Whether or not this is Sonic’s strongest form is up for debate, but it is stronger than Super Sonic.

Hyper Flash

Hyper Sonic creates a blinding flash that destroys all enemies on screen.

Feats

  • Consistently thwarts Dr. Eggman’s schemes of conquering the world
  • Defeated multiple robot doppelgangers designed to surpass him
  • Restored the planet after it was destroyed by Eggman…twice
  • Saved multiple animals and wisps from Eggman
  • Defeated multiple world ending threats, like Perfect Chaos, Dark Gaia, and The End
  • Along with Blaze, saved his world and the Sol Dimension from being destroyed
  • Restored the universe after it was destroyed by Solaris and Time Eater
  • Collected the seven world rings and saved the Arabian Nights from Erazor Djinn
  • Defeated an illusionary King Arthur and Merlina, and saved Camelot
  • Took back the world after it was conquered by Eggman

Strength

Durability

Speed

  • According to Sonic CD’s JP manual, characters need to move at light speed to activate the warp panels

Scaling

Dr. Eggman

Sonic’s arch nemesis. Obviously, he scales to him.

Knuckles the Echidna

Sonic has fought and defeated Knuckles multiple times. He scales.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Sonic and Shadow are stated multiple times throughout the series to be equals in strength and speed. They obviously scale to each other.

Silver the Hedgehog

Sonic has fought and beaten Silver multiple times. He scales.

Chaos Emeralds

Because Sonic’s super form draws out the “full power” of the Chaos Emeralds, he should scale to basically any feat they’re capable of.

Final Bosses

Weaknesses

Sonic can be impulsive, cocky, and overconfident at times, which can sometimes lead to him making bad decisions. Also, while Sonic can technically swim and has numerous ways around water, he still clearly has a fear of it, as seen in Sonic X. Sonic’s super form, while powerful, also has its limits. It runs on a time limit (although said time limit does vary per game and can be sidestepped with rings) and characters with comparable power are capable of bypassing its invulnerability…sometimes. A strong enough blow can also temporarily knock him out of his super form, as seen in his fight with The End.

Summary

“Merlina…every world has its end. I know that’s kinda sad, but that’s why we gotta live life to the fullest in the time we have. At least, that’s what I figure.”

  • Certain equipment can heal and amp stats
  • Various items can revive him and negate status effects
  • Various forms of defense like shields, including some he can regenerate endlessly
  • Rings protect him from taking damage and certain items multiply the amount he carries
  • Various haxes like time stopping, dimensional travel, transmutation, etc
  • Multiple super forms greatly enhance stats and have near invulnerability
