Defeat is a bitter pill that few are eager to swallow, but it often teaches more than any victory ever could. For Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily, each crushing loss to their blue rivals sparked a similar conclusion: the best way to destroy a hero is to replicate them, and this line of thinking led to their finest creations. Modeled after Sonic and Mega Man themselves, they are consumed by ambition and a relentless need to surpass their blue counterparts, and will go to any lengths to show their superiority, even if it means turning on their own creators. Packed with powerful weapons and an obsession to stand above all, will Bass kneel before the Overlord? Or is Metal Sonic gonna be another junk robot in Bass’ quest to be the strongest?

So, you might be asking what we are using for these characters. Metal Sonic will be getting not only the games but anything canon adjacent to them, like the IDW comics, mobile games, Sonic Riders and Sonic Prime. The latter seems to be a hot topic on being treated as canon because they do bring up a lot, and we mean A LOT of inconsistencies. But despite all this, they were actually confirmed to be canon by Ian Flynn. Additionally, we’ll be including the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA from 1999, because while not canon, it's not entirely important in feats and will be used for usage of lower showings of power, as well as some additional abilities.

To make things fair, for Bass we are giving the mainline games he appears in as well as adjacent games like Mega Man: Battle and Chase, Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters. We are also giving Bass the Hitoshi Ariga’s famous Mega Man Megamix and Mega Man Gigamix mangas. While not canon, both series are usable because they were deliberately made to expand upon the world of Mega Man, and not reinvent it. It also helps that not only is the author of the manga (Hitoshi Ariga) is one of the people responsible for forming the Canon lore of the franchise, helping write a lot of official material and even being noted as an editorial supervisor, but Keiji Inafune states that Ariga understands Mega Man better than anyone else in an interview.

Background

Metal Sonic

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, better known as Eggman, is a genius scientist with one simple goal: total world domination. From the start, he’s used his inventions to take control, capturing woodland animals and stuffing them inside his Badniks to power his armies. His obsession only grew stronger once he learned about the Chaos Emeralds, legendary gems that could fuel machines like his giant space fortress, the Death Egg, and give him the power to rule without question.

But every time Eggman launched a new scheme, Sonic the Hedgehog was there to tear it all down. Sonic’s speed and attitude turned him into Eggman’s worst nightmare, wrecking robots, freeing animals, and smashing Eggman’s dreams time after time. No matter how many times Eggman rebuilt, Sonic would come racing in to stop him.

Fed up with losing, Eggman decided if he couldn’t beat Sonic himself, he’d build something that could. His first try was Silver Sonic, a bulky machine meant to copy Sonic’s speed but far too slow to keep up. Then came Mecha Sonic, stronger and smarter but still not enough. Learning from every failure, Eggman finally created a sleek, deadly robot built to be Sonic’s perfect rival: Metal Sonic.

Metal Sonic proved himself to be the deadliest of the Sonic robots, as not only can he match Sonic’s speed, he can surpass it. Perfectly replicating Sonic’s techniques and having plenty of his own extras, Metal Sonic proved to be a worthy opponent for Sonic and continued to push the hedgehog’s skill to the limits. Metal Sonic is always trying to prove himself to be superior to Sonic and has taken different measures to do so, even turning against his creator at some points. Regardless of whether he’s working with or against the good doctor, Metal Sonic will stop at nothing to crush his blue rival and if anyone dares to stand in his way, they best be prepared to kneel before him.

Bass

Dr. Albert Wily was once a respected scientist working alongside Dr. Thomas Light, but when Light’s work in robotics earned worldwide praise and left Wily in his shadow, Wily’s pride twisted into jealousy and bitterness. Determined to prove his genius to the world, Wily resorted to sabotage. He stole many of Light’s original Robot Masters and reprogrammed them to attack the city, hoping to show that only he could control the power of advanced robots.

But from Light’s lab emerged hope in the form of Rock, a humble household robot who volunteered to be converted into a machine built to stop Wily’s rampage. Reborn as Mega Man, the super fighting robot became the hero who would stand up to Wily’s ambitions again and again. Throughout countless clashes, Mega Man consistently defeated Wily’s plans and restored peace. After Wily’s sixth failed attempt, Mega Man finally brought the scientist into custody, believing the nightmare was over.

Yet Wily was never one to leave his fate to chance. Anticipating the possibility of capture, he built four robots programmed to seek him out if contact was ever lost. Beyond these precautions, Wily worked on something far more dangerous. Drawing from years of data on Mega Man’s battles and studying Light’s original blueprints, Wily created his crowning achievement: Bass.

Bass was perfectly capable of all the same fighting capabilities as Mega Man was, even down being able to copy weapons of defeated foes, just like his blue rival. But Bass was more than a copy. Unlike Mega Man, who fought out of a sense of duty and compassion, Bass fought driven by ego. Bass is obsessed with proving he is the strongest robot ever built. This obsession pushes him to take risks even against Wily’s orders, showing zero hesitation to rebel if it means he will became worthy of that title.

To Bass, there is only one obstacle that stands between him and the claim of ultimate power: Mega Man himself. He wants nothing more than to stand victorious over Mega Man and declare himself the greatest creation ever to walk the earth, because for Bass, living to fight and prove his power is more than a mission, it is his very forte.

Experience and Skill

Metal Sonic

Despite how many times he gets jobbed on the series (seriously SEGA stop), Metal Sonic is an extremely competent fighter nevertheless, able to regularly spar with some of the most skilled characters in the franchise, like Sonic, who effortlessly replicated years of swordsmanship skill and experience like it was nothing and becoming the best knight of all time in just a day, mastered martial arts like kenpo and kung fu, to the point that even Zik, a martial artist with over a millennia of age, was impressed at his skill. Espio, an impressively talented master of ninjutsu, was impressed at Sonic’s skill, and Sonic also beat the Egg Dragoon, a machine that has years of study of his movement patterns in the several years he and the Doctor have been fighting. Metal also keeps on par with Knuckles, a skilled combatant, being repeatedly referred to as a skilled and master martial artist that can fight Sonic to a draw. Metal Sonic being able to go toe-to-toe with his template in both battle and other fields makes him one of Dr. Eggman's most powerful and skilled creations. In fact, he has been credited as the strongest robot invented by Eggman in order to defeat Sonic (page 21). Furthermore, he’s constantly improving himself, returning from each battle and defeat stronger and faster than before. Metal is impressively intelligent as well, as he has the intellect of Doctor Eggman himself, which would make him comparable to the most absurd levels of intelligence feats displayed throughout the franchise by having an IQ equal to both Eggman and Tails (because they’re often mentioned to have the same intellectual capabilities), which is absurdly impressive, as Eggman has numerous feats like constructing machines capable of draining energy from sources of power greater than the Chaos Emeralds, granting enough power to slice through dimensions and essentially warp reality, creating a ray powerful enough to place the entire planet under mind control, making devices capable of forging miniature stars, and even weaker prototypes of the Phantom Ruby which were still capable of warping reality and doing all of its powers in a more limited degree. Tails, who Metal is also intellectual matching, created a Chaos Emerald replica with the same wavelength and properties, a ship capable of dimensional travel, claimed he could build a T.V. out of paperclips and reprogram a super computer using only dishwashing detergent and a toothpick, and is capable of analyzing Cyber Space and glimpsing into its data, a technology vastly superior to any other on the planet at that point, and even hacking, notable feats being rewriting Emerl’s programming and even tracking the US president’s limo. Heck, even Sonic can hack, and Metal should be notably smarter. Neo Metal is also shown to have pretty smart plans, as he could manipulate the 4 groups of Heroes consistently throughout the events of Sonic Heroes, and also is pretty snitchy, staying hidden and copying their data to successfully develop his world domination (that failed). In Sonic the Fighters, we also see that Metal Sonic possesses notable skill in fighting, capable of dishing powerful and unpredictable techniques. His claw attacks unleash great damage, his throws are strong, attacks like lasers from his chest and the Emerald Dive makes his attacks too fast to dodge or block, as Metal Sonic is a very fast fighter (people kinda hate how broken he is in the game).

Bass

In his efforts to prove that he is the strongest, Bass has impressive fighting skills. He has regularly kept up with the likes of Mega Man plenty of times and still continues to remain as his equal, and just like his blue rival, he too has fought many sorts of enemies. Bass has fought various Robot Masters throughout, giving him multiple experiences in different battlegrounds. Bass has no issue fighting on land, underwater, in extreme heat or frigid cold, and even in the air. Fighting a lot of those Robot Masters also gives him experience in dealing with different combat styles as well as dealing with their different abilities. He’s dealt with big bruisers like Guts Man and Stone Man, the quick and nimble like Quick Man and Elec Man and even tricksters like Shade Man and Shadow Man. Despite his violent nature, Bass actually does have a bit of strategy to his fighting and is pretty good at discovering the weaknesses of enemies, and once he does, he will not hesitate at all to unleash said weaknesses on foes. Even though he’s rebelled against his creator plenty of times, Dr. Wily acknowledges him as a formidable robot and Bass remains as Wily’s strongest creation (until a certain red robot). His fighting potential is even acknowledged by Duo, who even holds Bass to good regard, saying that he has a strong justice energy in him.

Metal Sonic

For a brief period of time, the user will gain a sparkling aura and be rendered impervious to hazards that would normally cause them potentially lethal harm. (Lasts 15-20 seconds)

Shield

A single-use barrier that is used once the user takes an instance of damage, allowing for an instance of free damage.

Super Ring

Can grant from 5 to 100 Rings.

Dash

When opened, the user receives a burst of speed from a forward dash that lasts for a few moments.

Invincible

White and sparkling stars will envelop the user, making the user immune to obstacles and enemy special abilities.

Jump

The user is bounced into the air in a similar fashion to a Spring.

Mine

When acquired, the wielder is able to drop the obtained mine to leave a hazard for opponents.

Random Rings

Grants a random amount of Rings.

Smart Bomb

Upon use, all enemies on the screen are destroyed.

Magnetic Shield

A barrier which tanks one instance of damage without the user being harmed, also granting the additional benefit of pulling nearby Rings to them.

Health

Restores a decent amount of health.

Bowling Strike

A bowling ball is thrown ahead of the user, colliding into and stunning those it hits.

Free Throw

The user throws basketballs at an opponent, stunning them.

Octo-Boost

The Octo-Boost creates an exhaust from its mouth, giving the user a burst of speed.

Octo-Ink

The Octo-Ink will release a cloud of ink behind the user which forms a dome, said dome causing an obscured field of vision should somebody make contact with it.

Soda Rocket

A soda can with an image of Dr. Eggman on it. Shaking it will enlarge the soda can, with the user jumping on the giant can to gain a few moments of being shot forward at extreme velocities.

Target Torpedo

The user will gain a torpedo, which will lock onto whatever target the user is aiming at before homing in and hitting them directly to inflict damage.

Tee Shot

The user will gain a golf club, allowing them to strike a golf ball at an opponent and stunning them momentarily.

Rings

The iconic and golden Rings that Metal Sonic can collect. They’re extremely useful in battle, serving as an extra layer of protection for the users. Whenever they’re hit, Rings will drop out, protecting from fatal blows. As long as there’s one Ring, that will keep the user from dying. Users’ durability is also influential on how many Rings they lose from hits, and the higher their durability is, the less they lose Rings. Additionally, they can also increase stats, give Ring Energy and recover the users’ power.

Ring Can

An item Metal Sonic has access to in Sonic Riders. It’s a can that, when shaken, will release three clusters of Rings for Metal Sonic to collect.

Lost Labyrinth Treasure

The Lost Labyrinth Treasure is a mischievous orb that Metal Sonic found in the Lost Labyrinth Zone during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode Metal. The artifact appears to be a very powerful energy source. By harnessing its power, Metal Sonic could use its energy to augment his power, with his power boost being so potent that he would release a harmful purple energy shockwave from his body once he was successfully charged, and he would give off a magenta aura. While using the artifact's power, Metal Sonic's physical strength is increased to the point where he could destroy entire tracklines up to three times in succession with a single Spin Dash, and he becomes temporarily invulnerable to harm when charging its power.

Besides magnifying Metal Sonic's own abilities, the artifact also grants Metal Sonic the ability to project energy, allowing the robot to generate pillars of electricity that exist for a prolonged period of time and create massive spheres of energy.

Sonic Rivals Power-Ups

Some unique abilities in the Sonic Rivals series that Metal Sonic can gain access to in the races. Each different power-up has an offensive and a defensive effect, serving to either protect users or attack their enemies to win. Those power-ups consist of:

  • Fire
  • Offensive Effect: Shoots a fireball that speeds through the track to hit the opponent.
  • Defensive Effect: Creates a fire shield that protects the user from one hit.

  • Ice
  • Offensive Effect: Shoots a blast of ice through the track that freezes the opponent.
  • Defensive Effect: Drops an ice cube that freezes the opponent if they run into it.

  • Lightning
  • Offensive Effect: Zaps the opponent, paralyzing them for a short while.
  • Defensive Effect Drops several lightning decoy rings that paralyze the opponent if they touch one.

  • Illusion
  • Offensive Effect: Distorts the opponent's vision.
  • Defensive Effect:  Drops a small orb of Illusion that distorts the opponent's vision.

  • Ring Magnet
  • Attract nearby Rings.

  • Wind
  • Offensive Effect: Shoots a tornado that trails through the track and scoops the opponent up into the air.
  • Defensive Effect: Drops a tornado that scoops the opponent into the air.

  • Oil Slick
  • Offensive Effect:  Shoots a blob of oil that will cause the opponent to slip if they are within range.
  • Defensive Effect: Drops a puddle of oil that will cause the opponent to slip if they run into it.

  • Glue Trap
  • Offensive Effect: Shoots a blob of glue that homes in on the opponent and sticks them to the ground, rendering them temporarily immobile.
  • Defensive Effect: Drops a puddle of glue that sticks the opponent to the ground if they run into it, rendering them temporarily immobile.

  • Mine
  • Offensive Effect: Shoots a mine that homes in on the opponent and explodes on contact.
  • Defensive Effect: Drops a stationary mine that explodes if the opponent runs into it.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle Power-Ups

In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, there are unique power-ups that each playable character can access, granting them an advantage in the race. There are three types of power-ups to each character:

 

  • A Projectile, used to attack enemies at long or short distances, with the purpose of making you surpass them in the race;
  • A Boost, used to gain a very notable speed boost to get your chance to reach first place;
  • And a Trap, used to fool opponents and slow them down with surprise hazards around the race.

Metal Sonic is no exception, and has his own set of abilities granted by the item boxes of the game. It’s important to note that we’ll be including not only Metal Sonic’s abilities, but also Reaper Metal Sonic’s, considering he is just a skin, and not a completely different character.

Wisps

The Wisps are small yet very powerful creatures that come from Planet Wisp. They can bestow their power to make users gain extra abilities to aid them in combat. In Team Sonic Racing, Metal is capable of utilizing several of their abilities, and even if Wisps refuse to, in the Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps animation, he has access to a Wisp Capsule that can forcefully grant him their abilities.

Using the power of a Yellow Wisp, the user turns into a yellow spiral drill. As the Yellow Drill, users can burrow and tunnel underground at remarkably fast speeds. This can also be applied in underwater environments, allowing users to move as a living torpedo without the need for oxygen.

Blue Wisp

Blue Cube

Using the power of a Blue Wisp, the user transforms into a perfectly shaped blue cube. When transformed into the Blue Cube, they can emit large and destructive shockwaves by slamming into the ground that cause massive damage to those caught within them.

Cyan Wisp

Cyan Laser

Using the power of a Cyan Wisp, the user transforms into a cyan laser beam. As the Cyan Laser, they gain the same properties as that of a real laser, allowing them to move as a living beam of light. When hitting any surfaces as the Cyan Laser, they can bounce off them as if they were reflective surfaces. It can be used for quick traversal across the battlefield or for devastating impacts when ramming into enemies.

Pink Wisp

Pink Spikes

Using the power of a Pink Wisp, the user turns into a hot pink spiky ball. As the Pink Spikes, users gain long, razor-sharp and extremely durable spikes on his body. By inserting these spikes into a surface, they can stick perfectly firm to any surface, allowing him to climb up walls and along ceilings. The spikes can also be used offensively by using them to pierce opponents. It can also be used to augment the making it much more powerful than normal.

Violet Wisp

Violet Void

Using the power of a Violet Wisp, the user turns into a large, ghastly and smoky black orb with violet outlines. As the Violet Void, users essentially become a living black hole which can draw objects into themselves from a distance and make them vanish without a trace. However, the user cannot draw in objects that are too big or heavy. Because of the Violet Void smoke-like makeup, users are granted a degree of intangibility, allowing them to pass through certain obstacles unharmed. As the Violet Void, users are also capable of flight through mid-air. Like the Purple Frenzy, the Violet Void can add the mass of the objects they draw into them, allowing users to grow larger the more they consume until they reach maximum size. Also, the more the Violet Void increases in size, the stronger its suction ability becomes, enabling users to draw in bigger and heavier objects from greater distances. At maximum size, the Violet Void can draw in objects the size of the Frigate Skullian, a massive aircraft.

Orange Wisp

Orange Rocket

Using the power of an Orange Wisp, the user turns into a stubby orange rocket with six fins arranged in a regular hexagon on the rear. As the Orange Rocket, they can create powerful jet propulsion from their back to launch themselves forward through midair at staggering speeds.

Red Wisp

Red Burst

Using the power of a Red Wisp, the user turns into a red fireball that constantly gives off an aura of flames. As the Red Burst, users obtain pyrokinetic abilities. They are able to form a shield of flames around themselves that instantly incinerate anything it touches, and they can create explosions of fire by combusting into flames without inflicting harm on themselves. These explosions can be channeled to shoot the user higher into the air or be charged up to trigger large-scale and powerful explosions that destroy nearly anything within its range. In addition, the user's speed increases while using Red Burst.

Crimson Wisp

Crimson Eagle

Using the power of a Crimson Wisp, the user turns into a crimson-colored eagle-like figure that brings easy access to the sky unhindered

Black Wisp

Black Bomb

Using the power of a Black Wisp, the user transforms into an ever-growing bomb that progressively gets larger as the user takes out more enemies. As they grow, the blast they detonate gets larger as well.

Gray Wisp

Gray Quake

Using the power of a Grey Wisp, the user transforms into a grey iron ball with yellow eyes. As the Gray Quake, the user's body density is greatly increased and makes them so heavy that jumping or falling down on the ground can create destructive shockwaves. The Gray Quake also possesses wall-crawling abilities, allowing Sonic to scale walls despite his weight in this form.

Jade Wisp

Jade Ghost

Using the power of a Jade Wisp, the user turns into a jade-colored ghost and becomes invisible, can float around and pass through solid walls. It can attack enemies with its Ghost Attack, which tracks for the nearest enemy.

Magenta Wisp

Magenta Rhythm

Using the power of a Magenta Wisp, the user turns into a large magenta-colored eighth note. When in this form, they are able to bounce on air that allows them to move throughout it in semi-flight.

 Ivory Wisp

Ivory Lightning

Using the power of an Ivory Wisp, the user transforms into a living, straw-colored lightning bolt. As the Ivory Lightning, users gain the same properties as that of a real lightning bolt. Associated with this form, users can move at lightning-fast speeds and with acrobatic movements as living electricity. They also obtain electrokinetic abilities in this form, giving him the ability to either form threads of electricity that he can use to either electrocute enemies or connect themselves to targets as tethers.

Indigo Wisp

Indigo Asteroid

Using the power of an Indigo Wisp, the user turns into an orb-shaped body with striped indigo skin and a matching planetary ring encircling his middle. As the Indigo Asteroid, the user essentially becomes a miniature planet with a strong gravitational field. They are as such capable of creating a powerful gravitational pull around themselves, strong enough yank surrounding objects and enemies into themselves, subsequently transmuting the captured matter into life-less material for their ring system. Additionally, the gathered matter can be used to empower the gravitational pull. The Indigo Asteroid also grants users the ability to levitate through midair.

Phantom Ruby

A mysterious gemstone found by Eggman’s robots during the events of Sonic Mania that’s capable of messing with reality itself to do all kinds of powerful abilities, like time travel, create illusions, mess with perception, creating virtual Suns, creating unlimited duplicates of other characters that are formidable as their original counterparts, as well as of the user’s himself, that can be giant and weirdly warped, reverse and manipulate gravity, several ways of manipulating energy, such as for omnidirectional blasts, energy balls capable of sending opponents flying, laser beams, shockwaves of energy to repel opponents, defensive auras, and innumerable cuboid constructs that home in on targets, absorption, and lastly, it can create rifts in space-time to banish opponents to "Null Space", a dimension the Phantom Ruby is able to shape as an empty infinite space that is cut off from all dimensions. Within this space, no one on Earth was able to contact or detect Sonic despite having the technology to communicate with Sonic from across dimensions. Metal has used the Ruby before to transform into Giga Metal Sonic, which we will address later.

Chaos Emeralds

The all powerful 7 Chaos Emeralds, the iconic gemstones that characters seek all the time in the franchise. Who wouldn’t, after all? They’re amazing, capable of benefiting whoever has them at hand with several miracles. They can heal the user from losing counciousness, create life, bring beings back from death, manipulate weather, manipulate dreams, bring back memories if they’re lost, fabricate visions and reality warping. The user can also use these emeralds to power themselves and do things like achieving a Super State and using the Chaos Control technique. The Chaos Emeralds are stated numerous times to possess unlimited and/or infinite power as well.

Egg Hawk

One of the machines in Sonic Heroes that Neo Metal Sonic sent to stop the teams of heroes. This large robot resembling a hawk is capable of flight and shoot series of bullets to stop foes. The Egg Hawk also includes two Egg Pawns on the sides that fire bullets from artillery guns.  

Egg Albatross

The Egg Albatross is a big, blimp-like battleship that Neo Metal Sonic also uses against the teams of heroes. Not only it possess the Egg Hawk on top, but it has other two sections: a lower platform containing Egg Pawns, cannons and a Iron ball launcher, and a gold and red blimp with several of the aforementioned Iron ball launchers on either side and two propellers, one on the front and back, respectively.

Egg Emperor

Another mech that Neo Metal used in Sonic Heroes. The Egg Emperor is one of Dr. Eggman's stronger mechs. In addition to being capable of flight, the Egg Emperor is equipped with a deadly lance for offense and a large shield for defense, which can withstand massive cannon fire without taking damage. It can also launch destructive energy waves by swinging its lance, and deploy missiles. It is also capable of high-speed flight, being able to dash incredible distances in a short time and almost keep up with even Sonic's running speed.

Final Fortress

A massive warship created by Doctor Eggman, and the heart of the Egg Fleet. Being an aircraft, the Final Fortress is capable of flight. It is equipped with a massive plethora of defense mechanisms and is as well guarded by some of the most powerful Badniks Eggman has created, including E-2000s and Heavy-Egg Hammers. The battleship is as well filled with hazardous weapons such as turrets and destructive laser cannons, as well as laser fields and unstable, floating platforms that fall off when stepped on. Curiously, there are also a few switches planted along the Final Fortress that cause areas of it to self-destruct when activated, possibly as another security measure. This huge battleship was essential for the formation of Metal Overlord in the final battle of Sonic Heroes.

Bass

Bassnium

It’s the powerful energy source Dr. Wily unintentionally created while studying Mega Man, which is what powers Bass. The robot was called Bass in reference to it’s energy name: Bassnium (or Forte/Fortenium if you are from Japan). At the time of the classic series, Bassnium was the most powerful energy in the world.

Hyper Energy Crystals

The Hyper Energy Crystals (or HEC for short) are a powerful energy source. As per Dr. Cossack’s report, they contain an infinite amount of energy that it draws from another world. Anyone using one of these crystals has all their physical capabilities greatly enhanced. It also comes with an energy film that acts as an extra layer of invulnerability for its user that cannot be overpowered so easily. However, a robot equipped with one of these crystals must be able to have a strong mind in order to make the best use of it or else they may suffer from an overload. They can also provide things like longevity and possibly see ghosts.

Evil Energy

As the name suggests, Evil Energy is an alien force that can only be utilized by those with a blackened mind. It can be utilized as a power source or to further augment someone’s abilities like how Bass used it in his fight against Mega Man.

Even edgelords need a companion from time to time and here’s Treble filling that role. Treble is Bass’ dog and rival to Rush. Just like Rush, Treble is able to transform into a jet mode that Bass can hop onto for flying around. Treble is also capable of firing off energy shots from its mouth or tackle enemies with its dash attack. Treble can also transform into a racecar(???) and can fuse with Bass to form the Super Adapter.

Reggae

This stupid fucking bird that I hate is named Reggae. Just like Eddie is for Mega Man, Reggae will come in and drop items for Bass such as health or weapon energy. While he does mainly exist to mock and taunt losers and fools, he is somehow capable of throwing hands, even beating up Beat at one point.

Skills and Abilities

Metal Sonic

Spin Attack and Dash

As expected from Sonic’s copycat, Metal Sonic can curl himself up into a ball to smash into enemies or rev himself up briefly in place before rocketing off into a quick burst of speed. The Spin Dash is a "power-packed maneuver" involving breaking out into a "supercharged launch", that involves spinning in place to build up speed and momentum for high-speed movement. Increasing speed to such a degree to completely blitz opponents to the point of them nearly not moving from the user's perspective, even when said enemies were previously blitzing the user before hand. It allows users to move through walls and ceilings without falling, generate powerful shock waves that can lift nearby heavy objects into the air, and grant energy to use abilities. Users can see what's around them when spinning (be it a Spin Jump or Spin Dash) due to "kinetic eyesight" and potentially "a bit of instinct". Using the Spin Dash also circumvents the user being hindered by passive speed penalties.

Homing Attack

Another move copied from Sonic. During a Spin Attack, Metal Sonic can lock onto the nearest foe and immediately home in on them with another Spin Attack. Usage of the Homing Attack requires familiarity with curling into a ball and spinning around, being described by Sonic as "don't think, roll".

Energy Shield

In the OVA, Metal was creating a massive sphere of energy around him, similar to a shield. In his fight with Sonic, he also created another forcefield around him.

Black Shield

A near-impenetrable shield that surrounds Metal Sonic and protects him from incoming attacks, even potent projectiles such as the Chaos Spear.

Ring Spark Field

Metal Sonic surrounds himself in electricity and releases it, surrounding himself in it and firing it downwards to fry victims underneath. It makes for a good offensive and defensive move though it can leave him wide open after using it (though he has shown that he can charge it up fast and be fine with no negative effects right after using it). He can do a similar electrical attack that hits above him.

V. Maximum Overdrive

Metal Sonic can briefly overload his circuits to surround himself in energy and boost through enemies at a speed much faster than normal.

Plasma Pulse Attack

Metal Sonic can fire out a laser from his chest. Useful as a surprise attack.

Flight

Metal Sonic is capable of flight using the rocket booster on his back. Pretty straightforward.

Teleportation

Metal Sonic has shown to be capable of teleporting. Pretty direct, so he can use that for additional options for movement.

Copycat

As the name suggests, Neo Metal Sonic can scan and copy the signature move of foes. Be it organic lifeform or machine, Metal Sonic can perfectly replicate their move 1 to 1, via scanning or simply getting hit. You’re probably asking why we are saying Neo and not just normal Metal Sonic, since he could do it just fine in Rivals and it's on the screenshot you see above. Well, SEGA just threw a retcon blast and now he can’t anymore. Why? We don't know. Either way, here’s a few of those copied moves:

-Sonic Boom: Copied from Sonic the Hedgehog, lets Metal Sonic propel himself with a temporary burst of speed that can easily break the sound barrier  While active, the Sonic Boom grants Metal Sonic increased speed and invulnerability, allowing him to damage enemies and opponents with mere physical contact.

-ESP: Copied from Silver the Hedgehog, uses mind control to briefly confuse the enemy, mixing up their sense of direction

-Hammer Punch: Copied from Knuckles the Echidna, Metal Sonic can slam the ground with enough force that it creates tremors and briefly immobilize foes

-Knuckle Slam: Another move copied from Knuckles, Metal Sonic slams the ground to temporarily generate an explosive energy field that can damage enemies while the field is active

-Bat Guard: Copied from Rouge the Bat, Metal Sonic summons out bat-shaped bombs that surround him and anyone that makes contact with these will get damaged

-Chroma Camo: Copied from Espio the Chameleon, Metal Sonic can turn invisible and becomes intangible, as well as he can move slightly faster while it’s active

-Tail Copter: Copied from Miles “Tails” Prower, Metal Sonic can fly using his rocket booster…

Shapeshifting

Metal Sonic has showcased the ability to change his structure in order to get closer to others and getting opportunities to and copy data. As forming others appearances from being a simple weird liquid substance because of Chaos’ data, he's been able to perfectly replicate the structures of machinery, like pretending to be a broken Eggman dummy in order to trick Team Sonic into thinking Eggman was the mastermind behind the Ultimate Weapon, as well as disguising himself as E-10000B behind Eggman's back and performing so well that his creator couldn't see through his disguise. He's also been able to perfectly replicate the structure of organic beings like Eggman.

Chaos Spear

Copied from a certain faker, Chaos Spear is a multitude of projectiles formed from Chaos energy and is sent towards the target. They are capable of causing paralysis on opponents when hit by them.

Chaos Control

Another move copied from the certain faker, Chaos Control is one of the strongest techniques at Metal Sonic’s disposal. When the technique is utilized, space and time contort to the user’s will. Metal can do all sorts of things with the technique, such as reality warping the fabric of the universe, teleporting himself and other people/objects, even interdimensionally, time travel as long as there’s two users doing the technique, triplicate himself, create distortions in space-time as a mean of attack, seal other beings into another dimension, and most notably, slow and stop time. Metal can do the technique without the use of an emerald, which is incredibly impressive. Black Doom also states that the Chaos Control can get better and better by collecting more Chaos Emeralds.

Crystal Attacks

Metal Overlord can shoot his fingers as missiles, which are capable of sealing opponents in crystalized force fields.

Bass

Bass Buster

The iconic weapon of Bass and powered by Bassnium. Just like Rock’s Mega Buster, it’s capable of firing off regular energy shots and it can be charged up to do more damage. Unlike the Mega Buster though, the Bass Buster also has a separate attack feature that lets it fire out a rapid stream of energy shots.

Dash

Bass propels himself forward using the boosters on his feet to gain a quick burst of speed. Pretty straightforward stuff.

Booster Kick

A rising upward kick that Bass can use as an anti-air.

Crescent Kick

Bass performs a rising somersault kick that serves as a nice anti-air attack. He can even perform two of them in quick succession. I wonder who gave him the idea?

Sonic Crusher

An attack that looks similar to the Dash, but now Bass surrounds himself with energy in order to tackle through enemies. This can even be performed in the air. It crushes Sonic, GG Metal

Feint

Bass uses his teleporter to briefly enter a state where attacks can just phase through him outright.

Variable Weapons System

Just like his blue rival, Bass is equipped with the Variable Weapon System, which allows him to copy the signature weapons of the foes he defeats in battle. The only drawback to this is that each Special Weapon has its own limited supply of ammo before it runs dry, and another weapon would have to be equipped but there are ways to prolong them from running out. In Mega Man 8, Rock is able to use both the Mega Buster and a Special Weapon at the same time, so it’s likely Bass is able to do the same since he is based on his blueprints. Theoretically, he should be able to utilize any Special Weapons, but we’ll be showcasing the ones he’s been seen to actually use in fights.

-Slash Claw: Slash Man’s weapon. A short ranged energy claw attack that is capable of tearing apart asteroids and enemies down to a molecular level.

-Thunder Bolt: Cloud Man’s weapon. Fires out a ball of electricity that spreads out into two small orbs upon impact. It has enough power to restore abandoned generators into working condition again.

-Junk Shield: Junk Man’s weapon. Using electromagnetism, chunks of scrap metal surround Bass and will damage anyone attempting to get in close. These pieces of scrap can also be thrown towards the enemy.

-Noise Crush: Shade Man’s weapon. Fires off a sonic wave that can bounce off of walls. The reflected wave can be absorbed and fired back for an even stronger version of the attack.

-Scorch Wheel: Turbo Man’s weapon. Surrounds Bass in a wheel of flames briefly before flying off and rolling along the ground. Good for setting forests on fire.

-Freeze Cracker: Freeze Man’s weapon. Fires out an ice shot that splits into smaller versions when it makes impact with a wall. The ice is cold enough to not only freeze victims, but it can freeze lava as well.

-Plant Barrier: Plant Man’s weapon. Petals surround Bass to protect him from projectiles and enemies trying to get in close. The shield goes away after taking a hit but the petals are strong enough that they can pierce shields.

-Napalm Bomb: Napalm Man’s weapon. Fires out a bomb that slowly travels the ground and explodes after a while or upon contact. As the name suggests, these bombs contain napalm in them and are accompanied by several miniature bombs inside of the main one. When the bomb goes off, it causes an intense firestorm that spreads out into a wide area.

-Gyro Attack: Gyro Man’s weapon. Shoots out a propeller blade and its angle of trajectory can be manually altered.

-Dust Crusher: Dust Man’s weapon. Fires out a bomb encased in scrap metal that scatters upon impact, damaging nearby enemies.

-Gemini Laser: Gemini Man’s weapon. Fires off a laser that reflects around the place. Wily made the laser based on the idea that the dual nature of particles and waves applies to all matter. The elementary particles used in the Gemini Laser consider thoughts (or programs) to be waves of some kind, and act against anything that has thoughts, causing damage to robots controlled by programs. However, walls and other objects with a fixed position and no thoughts are considered to have infinite potential energy and are reflected when they are hit.

-Magnet Missile: Magnet Man’s weapon. Fires out magnets that are attached with an explosive. The magnets fly towards the closest enemy, changing trajectory when it locates an enemy above or below it.

-Rolling Cutter: Cut Man’s weapon. Fires out a scissor blade that travels like a boomerang. The Rolling Cutter is also capable of cutting through space.

-Super Arm: Guts Man’s weapon. This weapon simply lets Bass pick up large chunks of rocks to hurl at enemies. It also just increases strength in general, making them physically stronger.

-Ice Slasher: Ice Man’s weapon. An icy projectile that freezes enemies on impact. It has a temperature of 200 degrees below zero.

-Atomic Fire: Heat Man’s weapon. Shoots out a fireball. The fireball can be charged up to be even bigger and do more damage. Its heat can reach temperatures hotter than the sun. It’s capable of absorbing lesser flames.

-Crash Bomber: Crash Man’s weapon. Explosives that latch onto walls, the ground or even an enemy by drilling into them and detonate after a while. They detonate instantly if a heat source is nearby.

-Leaf Shield: Wood Man’s weapon. It uses EM waves to summon forth leaves coated in a special coating that can be used to attack enemies attempting to get in close. The shield can also be thrown.

-Bubble Lead: Bubble Man’s weapon. A large bubble is formed and is rolled along the ground, damaging anything in its path. The bubble is formed by altering the EM field to create a strong hydrogen bond between water molecules. It also contains sulfuric acid.

-Shadow Blade: Shadow Man’s weapon. Throws a ninja star that can be thrown in multiple directions and travels a set distance before returning back. The ninja star is coated in a machine-eroding substance.

-Centaur Arrow: One of Centaur Man’s weapons. Energy arrows are fired from the buster. It even travels in an arc like an actual arrow.

-Thunder Beam: Elec Man’s weapon. Fires off a dangerously high voltage of electricity that can easily short out other robots. It’s also capable of disrupting magnetic fields.

-Dive Missile: Dive Man’s weapon. Missiles are fired out that home in on the closest enemy. The missiles are equipped with an active and passive sonar system and utilize a screw propulsion system when used underwater. Outside of it, it uses jet propulsion and comes with a laser tracking system as well.

-Power Stone: Stone Man’s weapon. Makes a stone hand rise up from the ground and attempt to maul enemies with it.

-Pharaoh Wave: One of Pharaoh Man’s weapons. Releases two heat waves that travel forward and backwards to attack enemies.

-Quick Boomerang: Quick Man’s weapon. Fires out a quick barrage of metallic boomerangs to attack foes.

-Air Shooter: Air Man’s weapon. Launches 3 mini tornadoes that travel upward. The tornadoes function off of Bernoulli’s principle and utilizes the air pressure to add more energy to itself and make the tornadoes stronger. The tornadoes can be used to send projectiles back and they can also be used defensively as a shield.

-Chill Spike: Chill Man’s weapon. Shoots out an ice projectile that transforms into spiked icicles when it makes contact with the ground or wall. It will freeze enemies who make contact with it.

-Wheel Cutter: Nitro Man’s weapon. A bladed wheel is released and it rolls along the ground, traveling up walls. The wheel can also be held and it can be utilized to quickly traverse up walls.

-Commando Bomb: Commando Man’s weapon. Shoots out a bomb that can have its trajectory manually changed and when it makes contact with the surface, it explodes and leaves a damaging shockwave after it.

-Triple Blade: Blade Man’s weapon. Shoots out 3 knives toward enemies.

-Solar Wave: Solar Man’s weapon. Launches out a fire orb that spreads out into 2 fire waves that travel in 2 directions.

-Water Shield: Pump Man’s weapon. Creates a barrier made of water bubbles that circle around Bass. The bubbles can attack enemies trying to get in close and they can be released manually, spreading out at high speeds.

-Rebound Striker: Strike Man’s weapon. Throws out a ball that bounces all over the place until it hits a target. The more the ball bounces, the faster and stronger it becomes.

-Thunder Wool: Sheep Man’s weapon. Summons a piece of wool that floats upward and fires out a lightning bolt underneath. The lightning bolt can also conduct water for even more damage

-Forte Vulcan: Dangan Man’s weapon. Shoots out a homing missile that chases after the nearest foe, passing through walls and even circling around an enemy trying to hide

-Flame Mixer: Konro Man’s weapon. Surrounds Bass in a shield of flames that burn anyone trying to get in close. The shield can also be released, sending out its flames as an extra attack.

-Forte Cyclone: Aircon Man’s weapon. Fires out a wind barrier that can pass through multiple enemies and can destroy walls.

-Doppler Attack: Komuso Man’s weapon. Bass splits into 4 smaller doppelgangers and they are capable of phasing through enemy attacks, damage enemies with just contact and even go through walls and tight spaces.

-Time Bomb: The Clock Men’s weapon. It stops time briefly, allowing Bass to perfectly navigate around enemy attacks.

-Tengu Blade: One of Tengu Man’s weapons. Fires out a wind projectile using a bladed fan. The projectile can bounce on walls and can slice through enemies. The fan itself can also be used as an attack by dashing into foes.

-Copy Vision: One of Astro Man’s weapons. It utilizes holographic technology to create a copy that attacks foes with its own energy shots.

-Remote Mine: Pirate Man’s weapon. Shoots out a bomb whose trajectory can be changed manually and sticks to the surface or an enemy. It detonates manually or after a while, releasing an explosion that hits multiple times.

-Spread Drill: Ground Man’s weapon. Fires out a drill that can spread out into 2 smaller drills. Those 2 smaller drills can also spread out into 2 even smaller drills.

-Lightning Bolt: Dynamo Man’s weapon. Calls forth a barrage of lightning bolts to strike down and attack a wide area.

-Ice Wall: Cold Man’s weapon. Generates an absolute zero ice wall that can be used as an extra platform or to push into enemies as a battering ram. An alternate application is to just directly freeze enemies by grabbing them.

-Wave Burner: Burner Man’s weapon. A short ranged flamethrower that moves up and down, setting anything it comes in contact with ablaze.

-Magic Card: Magic Man’s weapon. Fires out a card that can be aimed in multiple directions. The card is capable of stealing energy from its targets and snatching items.

Transformations

Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic Kai

Powered by the Dark Ring, Metal Sonic Kai is the first of Metal Sonic’s many transformations. As Kai, he can fly, fire a giant laser and attack with its giant hands or attempt to crush smaller foes with them. It does however pose a pretty significant weak spot located at the torso.

Giga Metal Sonic

A transformation utilizing the power of the Phantom Ruby. It has sharp vicious hands it can use to attack foes with and can drop bombs or fire a giant laser from its mouth area. Just like with Kai, Giga poses a weak point in its chest area where the Phantom Ruby is located, where it can undo the entire transformation.

Neo Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic’s form after kicking Eggman to the curb. He can copy and scan data from other beings and can even shapeshift, altering his form and being able to mimic other beings, including robots. With this form, Neo can fire out an assortment of projectiles from his hands, ranging from energy blasts to lightning and he can create barriers to defend himself. It’s also the form that makes him start to talk, because apparently he can’t do it in his base form. Weird.

Master Overlord

A penultimate form for Metal Sonic that is achieved by using the Master Emerald in addition to Sonic and Shadow’s biodata. He lost the Super power from Super Neo Metal to transform, in result of becoming a massive dragon-like being.

Super Neo Metal Sonic

An amped version of Neo Metal Sonic, by harnessing the power of the Master Emerald. This form should be capable of all of the things that the ordinary Neo can do but to a higher degree, as well as gaining abilities from common Super Forms, like their invulnerability.

Metal Overlord

Metal Sonic’s strongest and final form. After he copied all data of his enemies in Sonic Heroes, which includes Chaos Data from Chocola and Froggy, Neo Metal used the debris of the Final Fortress to fuse with its pieces and form a gigantic dragon form, Metal Madness. The team’s attempts to stop him were useless, as after some build up, Metal managed to further evolve the transformation, giving it wings, and thus becoming the Metal Overlord. This metallic behemoth poses a threat to Super Sonic, and can shoot powerful lasers, as well as releasing missiles, his Crystal Attacks, to seal opponents inside of crystalized force fields, stopping them from movement.

Bass

Super Bass

Super Bass is the result of Bass combining with Treble. It gives Bass the ability to fly and enhances his buster’s power and attack, making it faster and stronger. Bass also comes equipped with the Rocket Buster, which shoots his fist out and homes in on the nearest target to damage them before the fist flies back. Bass can fire out two comet shots that fall down and break apart into smaller projectiles, fire out three energy shots that spread out, can shield himself with an energy aura and he can fire the Sweeping Laser, a move that fires out a laser beam that sweeps across the ground, destroying anything it comes across.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The blue blur himself. It’s no question that Metal Sonic would obviously scale to Sonic, since they always are on par when fighting each other. After all, Metal’s whole thing is being superior to him (and failing). He also has Sonic’s biodata copied, further improving the scaling.

Silver and Shadow

The two hedgehogs have been shown to be comparable to Sonic, who Metal Sonic scales to. Metal Sonic has also tangled with both Shadow and Silver before meaning he should be comparable to both of them.

The Final Egg Blaster

A large cannon built onto the Death Egg. Not only can base characters scale to this level of power, given Sonic defeated Emerl with no power boost, there’s no reason why Super Forms shouldn’t scale to it. Not only was Emerl stated to have captured its power, but to say Super Sonic or any of the threats he’s faced like Solaris or The End aren’t faster or more powerful than a machine Eggman made with NO emeralds would create a lot of issues narratively. Of course, since Metal Overlord was able to fight against 3 Super Forms at the same time, he should scale to this level of power.

Chaos Emeralds

By naturality of scaling to the other characters, he should match the power of the Emeralds themselves, as Sonic characters are constantly matching their power. Even with the full power of the emeralds, Sonic’s chances of defeating Metal Overlord were stated to be “slim,” so he should scale to most feats they perform (see Before the Verdicts).

Doctor Eggman

It’s no surprise that several of the good doctor’s contraptions have given the blue blur a hard time. With Metal Sonic scaling to Sonic, it’s pretty easy to assume we can scale the robot hedgehog to Eggman. Metal Sonic has even turned on some of those machines before, justifying the comparison.

Super Level Characters

Well, obviously not in his base form, his Metal Overlord form should be more than enough to scale to Super Sonic. Super Sonic could not harm him with solo attacks, and Eggman himself said that the chances of beating Metal were very small. Even during and after their fight, Knuckles claims that the battle was tough. This, by naturality, would also put Metal Overlord alongside with other characters as powerful as Super Sonic, making Metal comparable to all feats performed. Misc. Feats

Bass

Mega Man & Proto Man

Bass is based on the blueprints for Mega Man and is his rival. Because of that, it can be said that their basic design model is the same, which is supported by Megamix. The two have even teamed up together on a few occasions to take down the same threats. Like mentioned before, on the very last arc from the Megamix Vol 3 manga, “The Greatest Enemy in History” story arc, Bass also tanked an explosion from Copy Mega Man, who was stated to be more powerful than Rock. He has also teamed up with Proto Man in a few instances as well, and all 3 robots are portrayed as equal ,so it would make sense for Bass to be comparable to both Rock and Proto.

  • There is a chance the distance is greater than the highest end, as it appears that galaxies are in the background of the stage and the localization implies he travels across the galaxy. However, the planet’s texture on the map screen where the stage takes place resembles Jupiter and the stage is also called Jupiter. So there’s also the chance that the stage takes place on planet Jupiter.

Doctor Light

It’s not stupid to assume Bass, Rock, Roll, Blues… hell, practically everyone relevant in the series should upscale physically from Dr. Santa Claus over here. Ironically, this average joe looking scientist can secretly no-sell people like Spider-Man (not a robot master).

Duo

Just like with Mega Man and Proto Man, Bass has been shown to be on par with Duo. Duo even fought Mega Man previously and Bass has fought alongside Duo as well. Duo is even officially stated to be equal, maybe stronger than Mega Man and Bass.

Doctor Wily & Robot Masters

Bass has rebelled against his creator’s machines and minions in the past and is more than capable of taking them on. Scaling to Rock further supports that he would scale to some of the doctor’s finest contraptions.

Wily Machines

  • Has made many different Wily Machines throughout the years that all give Mega Man a hard time
  • The Wily Star has an ion cannon that distorts space-time
  • Wily Machine 8 is powered by Evil Energy and was equipped with a cannon that put Duo in a very weakened state
  • Invented Bassnium and claims it’s the strongest energy source in the Classic era

Robot Masters

  • He is also stated to be faster than light by Elec Man. (>c)

Stardroids

Bass has gone toe to toe with Mega Man, who had previously defeated the Stardroids. The events of Mega Man V take place before that of Mega Man 7, so naturally we can scale Bass to the Stardroids that Rock has bested. In Gigamix, the scaling is even more blatant, since Bass is the one who ultimately killed Saturn. However, due to the difference in portrayals of the Stardroids, their feats will be listed separately between games and Gigamix respectively by their respective subtitles.

Rulers of the Universe

  • Terra beat Mega Man, prior to upgrades.
  • Jupiter possesses a Megaton-grade bomb.
  • Saturn can create black holes that also slows down time (0.05 to 0.3 FOE)
  • Saturn is also said to be able to manipulate time.
  • Slash Man is designed after Pluto.
  • Sunstar should upscale all of the other Stardroids.

Destroyers of the Universe

  • The Stardroids make quick work of the other Robot Masters.
  • Terra stat stomped an army of thousands of Earth robots after being rusty for 50,000 years, with Dr. Light exclaiming him and his creations don’t stand a chance (without HECs).
  • Jupiter was going to destroy an entire city in 1 shot.
  • Jupiter was also stated to be 100x stronger than both Mega Man and Elec Man combined.
  • They quickly flew across the planet to wreck cities.
  • Neptune’s Salt Water contains microbes that eat any material.
  • Sunstar’s clash with Rock caused explosions visible from outer space.
  • Sunstar upon awakening shattered the moon-sized Dark Moon.
  • Sunstar was going to destroy the Earth and the whole universe over time.

Weaknesses

Metal Sonic

Besides failing to defeat Sonic the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic is a master of the fumble. Time and time again throughout the series, Metal Sonic keeps approaching victory or has a notable upper hand in battle, only to have it thrown out the window, one way or another. Beyond that, Metal Sonic does not have too many notable weaknesses other than his Kai and Giga transformations have very obvious weak points anyone can take advantage of, with the latter potentially even costing him the Phantom Ruby.

Bass

One of Bass’ most glaring issues is how brash and arrogant he is, especially when it comes to proving he is the strongest robot (and losing to Mega Man). Just like Mega Man, all of Bass’ special weapons have a limited amount of ammo and while he does have a way to prolong their use with the Energy Saver and W-Tanks, there’s still only so much time before he runs completely dry on ammo, leaving him with a lot less options.

Before the Verdicts

Can Metal Sonic scale to Super Sonic?

Metal Sonic has few showings of obtaining powerful forms that “seemingly” get to the levels of Super Sonic himself. However, these assumptions are not that clear cut, and have many debated questions over if they truly scale to the golden hedgehog’s might. In this section, we’ll address each form and if they’re truly able to be comparable to Super Sonic himself.

  • Metal Sonic Kai and Giga Metal Sonic: Pretty direct. They can’t be scaled to Super Forms. Both of these forms got beaten down with no difficulty by base form characters.

  • Metal Sonic’s “Super State” in Mania Adventures: The first case we’d like to bring happens in the last episode of the series, when Metal Sonic gets his hands in all of the 7 Chaos Emeralds and manages to enter a powerful state with yellow aura, looking like a Super Form. The main issue with this form scaling to Super Sonic levels of power would be the fact that the base cast whoops his ass without difficulty at all. However, this is the part where everything gets flipped upside down, because this was never a Super State at all. Writer Ian Flynn says that Metal didn’t use the Chaos Emeralds to transform, and in fact, just used them to power up. This would not only cancel any chances of this form scaling to Super Sonic, but it would completely affirm that this state wasn’t even a Super Form.

While it's pretty obvious that Metal Overlord scales to Super Sonic by the time of Sonic Heroes, does he scale to Modern Super Sonic? In our opinion, yes, but there are 2 common arguments used against Overlord that we think needs to be addressed right now.

"Super Sonic gets stronger over time"

To be fair, this is not a bad argument. After all, Sonic himself states that he gets stronger over time. With that said tho, this statement technically was only made about Base Sonic. You could argue that Super Sonic doesn't get stronger over time due to his power source being the Chaos Emeralds, which are said to grant infinite power. Even if Super Sonic did grow stronger (which he probably does?), it's obviously not to a point where Metal Overlord wouldn't still be a threat to him. In Sonic Generations, Classic Sonic (who is repeatedly stated to be Sonic from the past) fought and damaged the Time Eater. What does that mean? This means that Super Sonic by the time of Heroes was technically comparable in stats to Super Sonic by the time of Sonic Generations thanks to Classic Sonic's actions, which means Metal Overlord would scale to pretty much anyone Super Sonic fought by the time of Sonic Generations, like the Egg Salamander, Dark Gaia, Time Eater, Egg Wizard, etc. This is easily retroactive scaling at its finest, but it is what it is and it doesn't change that Generations suggests that Super Sonic's power didn't grow exponentially between the events of Sonic 1 and Generations)

And before anyone gets the wrong idea here, no one is saying that Metal Overlord should be able to beat Dark Gaia or Solaris in a head on fight. Don't twist our words. We're just saying that due to the scaling chain Classic Sonic creates, Metal Overlord shouldn't be too far behind those characters in terms of physical stats.

"Super Sonic varies in power"

Also not a bad argument. In IDW, Starline states that the Chaos Emeralds power "is chaotic, and can change given the situation or their usage." Does that mean Super Sonic's stats vary per game? It could be interpreted that way but that's likely not the case. Not only does Ian Flynn seem to not think that Sonic's Super Form fluctuates in power (which is relevant given that he wrote Starline's quote), but we feel that this statement is more likely referring to how emeralds are used outside of a character's Super State (i.e. Chaos Control, powering the ARK, Northstar Islands granting the emeralds new powers, etc.)

Also, just narratively speaking, we don't think it makes a lot of sense to argue Super Sonic's power fluctuates. If it fluctuated, why is it such a reliable win con in the games? Shadow states that he can utilize the FULL power of a Chaos Emerald. Why is Super Sonic equal to Burning Blaze on two separate occasions despite Blaze using a different power source that's never technically stated to flux in power?  What about Sonic's situation or usage of the emeralds against Gemerl is different from him using them against the Egg Wizard or Dark Gaia or Time Eater? It creates a lot more questions than it answers. If Super Sonic's stats really did fluctuate like that, you would think it'd be brought up in a game like Sonic Frontiers, where Sonic uses his Super Form a whopping 7 times with seemingly no change in power.

TL;DR: While the argument is fair, Ian Flynn's statement and in-game lore gives us reason to doubt that Starline's statement is meant to suggest that Super Forms themselves flux in power.

Is Metal Overlord standard?

If you're using Neo Metal Sonic, then there's no reason why Metal Overlord shouldn't be included. Contrary to popular belief, Metal Sonic does not need to fuse with the Egg Fleet to become Metal Overlord. He can just merge with any form of metal, similar to how Chaos merges with any form of water to become Perfect Chaos. In the game, he only used the pieces of the tower from Final Fortress. There's no reason why Metal can't fly or use Chaos Control to go somewhere where there's metal for him to merge with. And if that's not enough, Metal has his own personal flagship to merge with, if he really needed to. Not that any of this really matters though, because merging with metal is not how Metal Overlord became strong to begin with: It's the data he collected and combined with Chaos.

Either way, even if you think it is not standard, it would be included in the same leeway as some of Bass’ Special Weapons and the HEC. It’s also simply the most iconic transformation he has, and has no difference in the debate, given Super Neo is also being included.

Location of Planet Wisp

This one is very easy to debunk. In Sonic Colors, Eggman dragged Planet Wisp close to Sonic’s Earth, and by the end of the game, the Wisps teleported it back, so it ends up a bit farther away than we see during the story. Since Team Sonic Racing has the characters being taken to Planet Wisp after the events of Colors, we can’t use the previous game to figure out how far it really is.

There’s a popular calculation for Dodon Pa’s rocket flying to Planet Wisp that puts it anywhere from trillions to quadrillions of times the speed of light. But there’s a major issue even with the lower end of that estimate: it assumes that because Planet Wisp is described as being “across the universe", it must be well outside Sonic’s solar system.

The problem is, Ian Flynn himself said on a Bumblekast that Planet Wisp is probably still within Sonic’s solar system: “Okay, so the specific location of Planet Wisp is…? I don't know. Like, it could be in Sonic's solar system, which would be the most reasonable thing for Eggman to do. if he has the tech to pull planets from their own star systems, then why is he even bothering with planetary conquest, you know?”

And since this feat would only scale to the Super Forms anyway, there’s really no reason to give it that much attention anymore.

MFTL+ Base Sonic?

(Haha, get it? Massively faster than Light.)

You’ve probably noticed certain speed feats that would put the base form Sonic characters a bit higher than what they’re commonly seen in speed. A jump from commonly faster than light or FTL+ to MFTL+. Isn’t it a bit weird? Is it really valid? In this section, a bit more about it will be talked about. At the end of the day, it’s up to the reader to decide their opinions on it, but for the verdict, we won’t be relying too much on this.

First, we have Sonic Prime, where Sonic dodges a few lasers really fast, a feat that gets over 17 thousand times faster than light! Impressive, for sure, but is it really valid? Well, maybe. These laser feats are not a one time thing, as throughout all of the 3 seasons of the series, Sonic and other characters are constantly dodging those lasers without any sort of difficulty at all, meaning it shouldn’t be that much of an issue to justify. The question lies on whether or not the lasers are, well, actual lasers. Right after dodging one, Sonic refers to them as lasers. That being said, it’s kinda iffy to argue these beans don’t contradict any of the rules that are needed in order for them to be classified as actual lasers. It’s uncertain if the lasers are exploding or if it’s just a pixelated aura, for example. We should mention that lasers exploding whatever they make contact with isn’t necessarily a contradiction. If a laser is hot and powerful enough, it can superheat the surface quickly and thus cause an explosion. That being said, that’s definitely something the fictional work has to establish for its lasers, and Prime doesn’t seem to do that. We leave you to decide here.

Second, we have the many examples of interstellar travel, such as in Sonic Rivals, where Sonic dodges meteors while in a ship flying through space, and two of the mobile games, Sonic Runners and Sonic Jump, where we can see Sonic quickly flying through many stars. All of these get around a million times faster than light range. Now, the feats do have issues with it, as you can argue it’s merely background, as Sonic is not actually in space, which sure, is valid. The defense for these being applicable would come from evidence in Sonic Shuffle, because in the game, the Eggmobile flies a vague, small distance through stars in a minigame that takes place in outer space. This is not something uncommon, as in the game, we have many other examples of characters flying through the outer space of Maginaryworld itself. In the opening, Sonic and co. fly to the center of Maginaryworld in under 30 seconds, and later in the game, Lumina and Sonic and friends fly through several Dream Worlds while going to 4th Dimension Space. It is important to note that Maginaryworld is at least an universal structure, being possibly much bigger, and even more notable, the gang flies through many Dream Worlds while traveling through Maginaryworld. The big deal here is that said Dream Worlds are also impressively big. Inside of the dreams, we're shown things like stars and nebulae. This is something that's repeated very consistently throughout the dreams and the minigames. These show gigantic celestial bodies. Potentially even galaxies and beyond just from what we see. And considering that each dream is shown to have all of this, we can definitely try to assume that at least a good part of it contains them. Additionally, Ian Flynn did talk about the size of dreams, and said that some of them can reach universal size as well. So, not only they’re flying through Maginaryworld, but through many stars, galaxies, or potentially even universes. There’s just a tiny problem with this argument, which is possibly that the base cast couldn’t be doing that themselves. You could say that, with the aid of each other, they managed to take down Void at full power, as well as reacting to his attacks, and Void is half ot the goddess of dreams, Illumina, with the other one being Lumina, which does normally fly through the entirety of Maginaryworld. We leave you to decide here again.

Third, we have the Final Egg Blaster reaching a star cluster in seconds. This one is gonna be short: just because Emerl absorbs the Final Egg Blaster, it doesn’t mean he can react to the laser. The context shows he couldn’t react to Dr. Eggman firing at him. And just absorbing said energy doesn’t prove he can reach those speeds while empowered by the FEB alone. This one unfortunately is a no. This is not the end for this feat tho, because Super Forms definitely upscale the FEB.

Lastly, we have Shadow reacting to the explosion of the Paradox Prism, which shattered the entire universe. This one is extremely debatable, as you can argue that Shadow’s intention wasn’t dodging it, and more of a lucky situation where he got out of it without intending to. In fact, after the Chaos Control, Shadow seems extremely confused about what is happening. So, it’s not hard to say it’s not what happened and call it a day. But, it is possible to debate something to push the idea. Even if Shadow didn’t react to the explosion, Chaos Control’s warping speed was still fast enough to teleport Shadow to not get affected. And with that assumption, we can say it would apply to how fast Chaos Control’s speed is, and few characters in the franchise, most notably Sonic, have reacted to the technique before, and therefore would reach these estimated speed levels.

Overall, while it can be argued against, base Sonic characters reaching MFTL+ speeds can be argued, but we don’t want to press so much on the matter, so we are not taking this topic much further.

Addressing Mega Man Speeds

You probably noticed the “debatable” tag on a couple of reaction and travel speed feats in the Mega Man & Proto Man scaling section. Let’s go over the Jupiter feat first, given it’s easier to explain. This is a feat where Super Bass, or even just Bass using Treble as a jet, should be able to scale. Some might argue that the mid and high-end estimates are incorrect because the planet's texture on the map resembles Jupiter and the stage itself is even called Jupiter, making it admittedly reasonable to assume the distance reference is to Jupiter. However, this argument is unfortunately incorrect, since the text explicitly refers to the stage as running through interstellar space in Official Guides. In addition, given the space stages take place on the surface of planets Mega Man goes to and in Jupiter’s stage the surface is solid, one can very easily tell that it is not actually the planet Jupiter, and is merely called that because the boss’ name is Jupiter.

We also think it’s unreasonable to say that Classic Era Teleporters can’t send characters to uncharted planets outside our solar system. Some claim that the Classic series alters the established celestial bodies within our solar system, but there isn’t any evidence for this claim. Mega Man as a franchise usually respects a lot of our real world cosmology. When we look at Star Force Mega Man, for example, the series portrays the solar system accurately as shown in the AMAKEN Space Simulator, acknowledging planets such as Earth, and extending the universe with fictional planets located outside our solar system, adhering to real astronomical principles where outer planets are not mixed with the existing map of our known solar system. When the series introduces planets like Planet FM and Planet AM, they are not part of the solar system but exist in the broader universe. It doesn’t make sense for a subseries to respect the structure of our cosmos and not the main one, especially when characters in-lore are named after the moons of Saturn and we even see the actual Saturn in a museum.

Verdict

Stats

To put it bluntly, Metal Sonic simply has Bass beat by most metrics. While one could argue that Bass is more powerful than Metal Sonic's base form with certain high end feats, there are many feats throughout the Sonic franchise that could be used to match or surpass anything that could be used for Mega Man. The Final Egg Blaster destroying stars already outdoes any on screen feat performed by any of the Classic Mega Man characters, and the Sonic series has several comparable black hole feats. If we were to treat Mega Man's black holes as legit, the same would have to be done for Sonic under equal leeway. While Bass could have arguably higher speed if you don’t buy MFTL+ base forms, you shouldn’t rely on that factor to argue a character wins. We are analysing these guys at their strongest.

For starters, Metal Sonic can keep up with Bass in the AP department, and with abilities like the Spin Dash, the gap between him and Bass could increase, and regardless of your stance on Base Metal's stats, there's no doubt that his Metal Overlord or Super Neo forms would be too much for Bass to take on physically. Metal Overlord in particular is so powerful that it took the combined might of 3 Super Forms to bring him down. This is the same Super Sonic that's capable of taking on deities that can destroy planets, stars, and even the entire universe, and both Metal Overlord and Super Neo are comparable to all of this. Even if we were to take all of Bass' high end feats mentioned at face value, it should go without saying that destroying stars or an entire universe is way more impressive than creating black holes. In terms of speed, Metal Overlord has him beat too. While Bass could be scaled to characters capable of traveling across planets at billions of times the speed of light, the Final Egg Blaster can reach stars at billions of times the speed of light as well, which Super Forms should upscale. Super Forms are also capable of keeping pace with Solaris, who was destroying the universe at a speed of at least 800 trillions of times the speed of light.

TL;DR: no matter how you slice it, Metal Sonic would be more powerful and faster than Bass through most metrics

Arsenal and Abilities

At first glance, Bass seemingly holds the advantage in this category. Unlike Mega Man, Sonic isn't exactly known for having a wide array of power-ups or abilities. But after analyzing their powers, we think it's safe to say that Metal Sonic is more than capable of matching and surpassing Bass in this category. Let's address the obvious elephant in the room. Even if Neo Metal Sonic didn't match Bass in abilities at first, nothing is stopping him from copying them with his copy ability. This would mean that Metal would have both his own abilities + Bass' on top of it, giving him the edge in versatility.

Even if this weren't the case, there isn't much in Bass' arsenal that can be used to harm or get any advantage over Metal. Both are capable of stopping time and stealing each other's items, but Metal actually has ways of dealing with it, unlike Bass. For example, Bass is vulnerable to Metal's Chaos Control and has no way to make Time Bomb work on Metal since the latter has time manipulation resistances. Even if one were to argue that the Ice Wall itself is absolute zero, it doesn't reduce what it hits temperature to absolute zero and Sonic characters can resist cold temperatures. The Rolling Cutter's ability to cut space-time doesn't mean much because Sonic characters can survive Shadow's Chaos Magic. Etc. Almost everything else requires Bass to have the AP needed to do serious damage to Metal Sonic in the first place, which as we addressed in the stats section...he doesn't. Just to be generous, lets list some abilities that would probably work on Metal, due to negating durability or targeting specific weaknesses:

  • Thunder Bolt and Thunder Beam - These weapons might not look much, considering Metal Sonic only incurs minor damage from the attacks from the Ivory Wisp, which demonstrates his systems are designed to withstand substantial electrical forces, albeit not completely immune. His not-complete immunity becomes evident during the V. Maximum Overdrive, which strains his systems through circuitry overload. We can't simply measure something not specified, but it's possible both the Thunder Bolt and Thunder Beam deliver high voltage attacks that could mimic or even exceed the intensity of the electrical forces in the Ivory Wisp form. Given Metal Sonic's only partial resistance to such levels of electricity, these weapons are likely to be at least a bit effective in that area. Additionally, the Thunder Beam's capacity to disrupt magnetic fields poses a significant indirect threat to our metal hedgehog by potentially destabilizing crucial magnetic systems in Metal Sonic's operations. This dual capability of delivering high-voltage shocks and disrupting magnetic fields closely aligns with Metal Sonic's vulnerabilities, particularly when he's already compromised by using moves like the V. Maximum Overdrive. However, it's important to note that this analysis applies only to the base form of Metal Sonic. Considering Neo Metal Sonic's full resistance and absorption to real lightning, the special weapon working is very unlikely.

  • Gemini Laser - This weapon, due to its unique nature of being affected by the thoughts or programs as waves, might disrupt Metal Sonic's operational programming or internal sensors if it interacts uniquely with robotic AI systems.

  • Shadow Blade - Metal Sonic is susceptible to the Shadow Blade and the substance it’s coated in. The machine eroding substance that is on the Shadow Blade can derange any machinery it comes in contact with and with Metal Sonic not having a resistance to such a thing, it’s safe to assume the weapon would prove to be deadly.

  • Slash Claw - The final and most importantly, Metal Sonic appears to have no countermeasures against attacks that could disrupt its molecular integrity, such as the Slash Claw. The Slash Claw is capable of affecting matter at the molecular level, and could bypass conventional durability by dissociating molecular bonds. This means that even if Metal Sonic's external armor is designed to withstand high impact and pressure, it won’t be resilient against a force that directly targets and manipulates the molecular cohesion of its materials, completely negating conventional durability.

…so, only five special weapons. To be fair, there are a few scenarios where we can see Bass' Slash Claw or Shadow Blade catching Metal off guard or destroying him, but there's also no real reason why Metal can't counter their effects by either turning into liquid or just block them out with his energy shields or Black Shield, or be prevented from dying because of the Rings. Metal has options to become completely unharmable to Bass either way, like Jade Ghost, Chroma Camo, invincibility power-ups and Lost Labyrinth treasure. So, overall, Bass is outmatched by Metal’s options and potent resistances or counters.

Tertiary Factors

When it comes to this category, both have shown to possess incredible skill and experience, fighting their own sets of powerful, variable, and skilled opponents in many types of locations. Not even that, both have been stated to be their creator's most powerful inventions, and they definitely prove that from time to time... except when they don't. And in that regard, you might think Bass holds an edge, since he has way less notable losses like Metal Sonic, and the robotic hedgehog was seen defeated many times while possessing powers that could easily aid him to victory over his organic duplicate and his friends. That, however, should not be used to argue Bass has superior skill.

Of course, Metal loses from time to time for things that can look stupid, but that's because most of the time, there is not just one person fighting off with him. In fact, most of the time, a team-up with several characters is usually needed to beat him. Take for example, when Metal Sonic used the Chaos Emeralds to amplify himself in order to eliminate Sonic and his friends. In order to even stand a chance, it needed Sonic, Tails, Mighty and Ray to take him down, and not even that was enough. Was truly defeated Metal Sonic in that instance was Sonic, Mighty and Ray distracting Metal until Tails could successfully hack into Eggman's machinery to trap Metal and get rid of the Chaos Emeralds he had utilized to power-up. Another example, Metal Sonic Kai, needed the strength of at least 2 characters, possibly the entire Chaotix. Super Neo was also only defeated because Shadow had a specific ability that could nullify his Super State, which left him vulnerable and led him to opt for more brute form, at the cost of his Super Form strength. While that may seem a downgrade, Master Overlord still needed a lot of work to be taken down. Sonic, Tails, Tangle, Whisper, Silver, Blaze, Charmy, Vector, Espio, Amy, and Rouge were all fighting Master Overlord at once, serving as a distraction so Knuckles could punch around where the Master Emerald was in Master Overlord's body until it was removed. In recent stories like Sonic Channel, Metal was also defeated because the Chaos Emerald he had was unstable. And of course, Metal Overlord needed three whole Super Forms to be harmed.

In short, a lot of his showings of "fumbling" are because he needs to be greatly outnumbered, distracted or a factor that contributed to his loss. Even if there was more than those listed, that often was base Metal. Neo Metal Sonic is much smarter, and would probably not obtain such failures if he was there. For example, when he was offered the Phantom Ruby to transform into Giga Metal, it is much likely that if it were Neo Metal in this case, to opt to use much of the more variable powers that the Ruby has, much like the Doctor. Of course, it's just a possibility, we can never really know. Metal, as smart as he can be, opts for brute force oftenly, but it definitely does not mean he would not know how to deal with a threat like Bass.

Summary

“See me as I am, no longer afraid of anything! I shall become the ultimate overlord, ruling as the world’s most supreme being!”

Advantages:

  • Takes the stat trinity by most metrics, debatably even in base
  • In Neo Metal, much more smarter and cunning
  • Superior abilities, and copy ability allows Metal to replicate both Bass’ weaponry and abilities for an even greater advantage
  • Can resist most of Bass’ abilities, and his shields can protect him from any ability that Metal may be vulnerable to
  • Steal power-up can be used to steal Bass’ items
  • Rings can protect him from taking fatal damage
  • Has few ways of becoming completely invulnerable or unharmable to damage

Conclusion

While Bass is a powerful opponent in his own right, Metal Sonic has the advantages he needs to pull off a win more often than not. Not only is he the more powerful and faster of the two, but his copy ability ensures he’d be the more versatile of the two. Not only would he have all of Bass’ abilities, but he would have his own abilities on top of it. While one could argue that Bass could defeat Neo Metal before transforming into his Super Neo or Metal Overlord form… which goes against the rules we follow for these blogs in the first place, there are plenty of higher end arguments in Sonic that can be used to match and surpass Mega Man when treating them both with equal leeway (i.e. continent shifting, Master Core ABIS, Violet Voids, Final Egg Blaster, Erazor Djinn, etc.). And while there are five weapons in Bass' arsenal that could spell the end for Metal Sonic in base form, his overall superior speed, shapeshifting, and shields ensure his survival. All in all, bassed on what we have seen, the winner is… uhh.. Metal Sonic? Metal Sonic.
