Introduction
Mazinger Z, the photon powered titan piloted by Koji Kabuto.
Getter Robo, the ever evolving combiner robot piloted by Team Getter.
It’s finally time to tackle one of the oldest rivalries in mecha history. Born from the wonderful minds of Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, these two titans are some of the longest standing robots in manga and anime history and the influence they have on the genre and many other franchises is undeniable. Today, one of them will prove who is the most super robot among them. Is Mazinger gonna getter done or can Getter render Koji a Mazin-goner?
Before We Start…
Both the Mazinger Z and Getter Robo series have been some of the longest running franchises in animanga history and with so many differing mangas, animes, OVAs and so forth, it can be very confusing to determine what research is being done for both of them. For this battle, we’ve decided to do soft composites for both as long as Mazinger was created by Doctor Kabuto and piloted by Koji and Getter Robo is being piloted by at least 2 of the original pilots. This narrowed it down to…
Mazinger:
The Toei continuity (Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Grendizer, Grendizer vs Great Mazinger movie, Infinity)
The manga by Go Nagai (Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and Grendizer)
Shin Mazinger Z anime
Mazinkaiser OVA and manga
Shin Mazinger ZERO manga
Getter:
Toei continuity (Getter Robo, Getter Robo G)
The manga by Ken Ishikawa (Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Shin Getter Robo, Getter Robo Go, Getter Robo Arc)
The manga by other authors (Getter Robo Anthology, Getter Robo Devolution)
OVAs (Armageddon, Shin vs Neo, New)
The Getter Robo Arc anime
Background
Mazinger Z
“Pilder On! Mazinger Activate!”
What if one day you had the power that exceeded human limits? Would you use that power to be the devil that thrives off of destruction of the world? Or would you be the hero destined to save it? That’s the question that was asked to Koji Kabuto. Living with his grandpa and younger brother after losing his parents, Koji lived a relatively normal life and got by each day thanks to his grandpa’s inventions making them lots of money. One day while going to school, an earthquake happened and being worried for his grandpa, Koji rushed back home and saw that the earthquake showed the way to a basement and there he would be greeted with something extraordinary. Koji’s grandpa was gravely injured and he wanted to atone for his sin of taking away Koji’s parents, thus he began working on his greatest project meant for Koji. This would be the devil machine known as Mazinger Z.
“You can become a god that saves humanity or a devil that destroys the Earth! That choice is yours to make!”
Mazinger Z possessed great power and in grandpa’s dying moments, he told Koji that he could exceed humanity with it. He could choose to become a devil that would destroy the world or a god that would save it. The choice was ultimately left for Koji as he climbed aboard the Hover Pilder that controls it and once docked with the giant robot, his days as a mech pilot would begin. Initially, Koji didn’t have the best time in operating this new machine as it began wreaking havoc all across Japan and required another giant robot to step in. No matter how much Koji pleaded, Mazinger just would not stop causing destruction, almost as if it had a mind of its own. To make things worse for him, a group of Mechanical Beasts began to appear and cause even more damage to Japan. Eventually, Koji began to get the hang of piloting the machine and just in time because now he would be caught up in battle against the forces of Dr. Hell and his Mechanical Beast army but as long as he had the invincible power of Mazinger Z at his side, Koji would never falter in his fights as he continues to fight to save the world.
Getter Robo
Evolution was the road that led humans to be where they are today, and yet it continues to grow and change with each fleeting moment. Professor Saotome and his colleagues made the discovery of a powerful energy source known as Getter Energy and began researching the applications of such a thing as such a power was being used on a robot. In addition to this, not only did Emperor Gore and his Dinosaur Empire begin to cause destruction in the name of wiping out humanity, but Saotome’s search for pilots that would be suited to operate this robot had to be finished as well. These three pilots would be Ryoma Nagare, Hayato Jin and Musashi Tomoe. With all 3 pilots finally gathered, the robot’s potential could now fully be unleashed as Getter Robo.
(The most powerful machine in the world, wielding the energy of evolution itself)
Getter Robo would not only prove to have incredible capabilities, but it was also humanity’s best chance against Gore’s prehistoric army. With its incredible ability to take on different formations for different scenarios, Team Getter would take down threat after threat and be a thorn in the Emperor’s side, and it was proof that teamwork made the dream work as the 3 pilots would be nearly unstoppable. Even after Musashi’s sacrifice, the spirit of Getter still lived on and would continue to fight the good fight because as long as someone believes in Getter, it will do the impossible.
History and Legacy
The robots in this matchup were created by two best friends and very close to each other in time, so, naturally, they have a lot of history together. From official anime movies to crossovers such as Super Robot Wars, Mazinger and Getter are considered brother series and as such we have a lot to compare between them. But the length of their individual legacies don’t stop there, as they also have greatly influenced not only the mecha genre but media as a whole. In this section we will elaborate on their importance for popular culture and their histories as franchises.
Go Nagai and Mazinger Z
A few of you may not recognize Mazinger Z, but so many of your favorite properties would be nothing without it. Go Nagai is a mangaka who hit his stride in the 60s and 70s, back when the rules of anime were still being defined. He became a trendsetter for his revolutionary artstyle and unique writing style. His most influential works being Devilman and Mazinger Z, both of which have no doubt influenced some of your favorite anime or video game works today, directly or indirectly.
One day, Go Nagai was stuck in a traffic jam. He thought that it would be nice if his car had legs so he could walk over the cars in front of him. Little did he know at the time, this simple idea inspired by something so mundane would change the world of entertainment forever. In 1972, during a meeting discussing the release of the anime version of Devilman with Toei Animation, a proposal for a robot anime and manga was dropped. It would feature a robot, but, much unlike its predecessors such as Tetsujin 28 (known in the west as Gigantor) and Tetsuwan Atom (known in the west as Astro Boy), the robot would be piloted with a vehicle docked at its head. After a concept stage in which the vehicle was a motorcycle, a Hover Pilder was established as the robot’s control unit. It was decided it would look intimidating, as a machine of that size and capability for destruction should be. It would be a protector, but also a punisher of evil. Something with the capacity to be a savior or a destroyer in the hands of a human. Piloted by a hot blooded young man, the mighty giant was called Mazinger Z.
(Energer Z, the original concept that would evolve into Mazinger Z)
Mazinger Z was a breath of fresh air in anime, and of course became a big hit. As previously mentioned, robots up until that point were very different. Tetsujin 28, who we can safely consider the grandfather of mecha anime and manga, was controlled with a remote control box; Giant Robo, a very big exponent of tokusatsu mecha, was controlled with a watch and voice commands, and the list goes on. By introducing the concept of a giant robot controlled like a vehicle by the hero, the formula was changed, and Mazinger opened the way for much more experimentation with the genre.
But a story isn’t defined just by its heroes, and Mazinger Z’s villains are also a key to its success. Inspired by the Kaiju boom of the 60s, the enemies of Mazinger are not just mere machines, but also city-wrecking giant monsters, something that was relatively unique for the mediums at the time. Much like Ultraman, Mazinger Z followed a monster of the week format, in which a new giant robo monster was sent by the devilish Doctor Hell. Inspired by other tokusatsu superheroes such as Android Kikaider and Kamen Rider, this format where the big bad sends new enemies for the protagonist to fight every week stuck with mecha anime, influencing several shows even up to decently recent ones like Gaogaigar.
A smash hit, Mazinger Z received many sequels, spinoffs and reimaginings as the years passed, but that’s far from where the giant robot’s legacy stops. Many creators from Japan were inspired by the ideas of Mazinger Z and its influence is palpable in several of the country’s media monoliths.
Starting with one of the biggest mecha anime to date, Neon Genesis Evangelion was greatly influenced by Mazinger Z, as many interviews from Evangelion’s creator, Hideaki Anno, will reveal his obsession with the series and his devotion to Go Nagai’s creations. It’s easy to note the similarities between the first episode of Evangelion and the start of Mazinger Z, especially in the manga. A giant robot going out of control and being portrayed like a monster despite having a pilot inside was groundbreaking for the time, and certainly inspired Anno in the creation of Evangelion. Asuka Langley, one of the series most popular characters and possibly the top 1 favorite in the fanbase, was also heavily inspired by the second MC in the series, Tetsuya Tsurugi, pilot of the Great Mazinger.
(First episode of Mazinger Z, first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion)
But Mazinger Z reaches a broader zeitgeist than that. Several enemy and main character designs from Mega Man also take direct influence from the mecha series, proving the heroic giant robot was important to the creation of the Blue Bomber, and it goes beyond referencing the Rocket Punch doing countless times. Most significantly, the Mettonger Z and Hyper Mega Man from Marvel vs Capcom are huge references to both Z’s and Great's robots designs, and it’s safe to say that Doctor Hell was a major inspiration for Doctor Wily with his design, role in the story and taste in villain hideout decoration, just to name a few.
(Hyper Mega Man and Mazinger Z)
Without just these franchises that we’ve mentioned here, gaming and anime as we know at large may be vastly different from what we see now, and we have Mazinger to thank for all of their contributions. References to iconic Mazinger moments and attacks (most significantly the iconic Rocket Punch) can be found in all sorts of other iconic series too, from Dragon Ball to Devil May Cry to Marvel vs Capcom and even Metal Gear Solid. You can also see references to Mazinger Z in other monolithic game franchises such as Bomberman (even with one of it’s main villains) and Sonic. Even Oscar-winner movie director Guillermo Del Toro is a fan, as several moments from Pacific Rim are homages to the series at large.
(Real acknowledges real)
Even when its influence isn’t directly shown, it’s safe to say Mazinger Z also encouraged many aspiring mangaka. Names such as Gosho Aoyama of Detective Conan fame and Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, have directly and indirectly shown their appreciation for Mazinger Z as one of the many stories that they loved in their childhoods.
(Mazinger Z, Gigantor and Astro Boy in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6)
But this is nowhere near where Go Nagai’s influence ends. His other largest manga Devilman and Cutie Honey, were revolutionary for their own time, inspiring beloved series like Berserk, Chainsaw Man, Kill La Kill, Dragon Ball, and overall MAJOR contributions to the mecha, shonen, and magical girl genres that are so widely beloved and recognized today. It isn’t for no reason that he was honored as a knight by the government of France for his contribution to arts and culture. The world had changed because of the contributions of Go Nagai, and Mazinger Z is an instrumental part of that, as fitting for the super robot with the power to be a god or a devil.
Ken Ishikawa and Getter Robo
Much like its opponent, Getter Robo is a crucial influential figure that extends beyond the mecha genre. Its influence is deeply tied to its creation as well. You might not know it, but chances are your favorite giant robots have a good bit of Getter DNA in them.
The idea for the combining robot was born when Ken Ishikawa and Go Nagai were asked by Toei Animation to make another robot anime after the absurd success of Mazinger Z with a new gimmick, this time transformation. Why sell a single robot when you could sell multiple toys of the same robot? Initially stumped, the duo had no idea how to implement the gimmick into a robot and make it have multiple forms. One day, when Nagai and Ishikawa were in a car dealership doing a test drive, they got involved in a small car accident. Three cars crashed into each other in sequence. This led Go Nagai to a realization: the robot could combine with 3 vehicles smashing into each other in different sequences, combining into different forms. Yes! This is how the idea of the combining robot-which can be seen almost everywhere nowadays in robot media, a fateful car accident. The proposal was shown to Toei Animation and met with a lot of praise for its creativity and potential.
(A car crash that snowballed into a universe-sized mecha to be featured in a future Death Battle episode)
Initially idealized as just 3 cyborgs fusing together, it soon evolved to 3 racing cars. Finally, it was decided that the 3 components of the robot would be flying jets. The robot received many design revisions in its initial stage before the iconic look we know today, with Nagai only contributing a rough outline of the concept, but it eventually clicked. Piloted by three burning hearts that become one, the name of the combining giant would be Getter Robo.
(The initial concepts for Getter Robo’s forms)
Both the manga and anime were released almost simultaneously in 1974 to immediate success in popularity and sales, spawning a sequel right after. Following the trend established by Mazinger Z, Getter Robo followed a monster of the week format and accompanied a piloted giant robot. The difference, of course, would come in the innovative combination system, which hadn’t been seen in protagonist robots before.
After a sequel with Getter Robo G, the production of Getter anime stopped for a while until the coming of Getter Robo Go. During that time gap, Ken Ishikawa worked on many manga, honing his skills and coming up with concepts that he would later incorporate into Getter Robo. After Go, a sequence of other Getter Robo manga and anime was made, with Ishikawa focusing on the manga as his life’s work. Unfortunately, it would not receive an ending, as Ken Ishikawa passed away in 2006, years after the conclusion of the last published part of the Getter saga, Getter Robo Arc.
Getter’s popularity was instantaneous, and naturally inspired many properties in a short span of time. Inspired by the success of the combination robot gimmick, Toei got the ball rolling with another giant robot anime called Combattler V, this time featuring 5 pilots instead of 3. The Getter-inspired format was very successful, and encouraged the creation of subsequent combination robots from Toei and other studios, such as Beast King GoLion, which would be imported to the United States as Voltron, introducing American children to the iconic Gattai sequences of anime. It became such a staple of mecha that it was eventually implemented on Super Sentai in 1981 in Tayo Sentai Sun Vulcan’s Sun Vulcan Robo. This of course proved very successful for Sentai, leading to the series continuing to use combining robots to this day. In the 90s, the then sentai show Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger had its license bought by Saban and aired in the United States as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, bringing the concept of the Megazord to public knowledge in America as well.
But big studio executives weren’t the only ones to be inspired by Getter Robo and its innovative ideas. As a whole generation of children from Japan grew up watching anime in the 60s and 70s, many of these early otaku became creators in their own right, with a notable example being Hideaki Anno, the man behind Evangelion. Anno’s directorial debut at the revolutionary Studio Gainax was Gunbuster, a mecha anime with many inspirations, most notably Getter Robo. You can easily tell by its design that it looks like Getter Dragon (down to the same way they fire their beams), and it’s also obviously inspired by Getter in the way that it combines: two ships joining together and forming a giant robot. Not only that, but the iconic Gunbuster arms crossed pose was also lifted directly from Getter Robo G. This pose was so influential that it features in several other anime, becoming known as the “Gainax Pose”.
(The original)
(The many inspired)
And of course, we can never mention Gainax and Getter Robo together without talking about arguably the most iconic anime inspired by it: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Where to even begin? The drill, the green cosmic energy that propels human evolution, the themes of willpower and destiny, everything is there. Gurren Lagann was created as a homage to mecha (and Ashita no Joe?) as a whole, and it’s easy to see how Getter Robo dictates Simon’s journey the most in terms of themes and aesthetics, as many people have drawn the parallels across the years and it was acknowledged by staff that they are conscious homages by the show’s writer, Kazuki Nakashima, even if a section of TTGL’s fanbase act like it didn’t. A notable, major influence is found in the Spiral Nemesis, a theory in which the Anti-Spiral describes the consequence of the abuse of Spiral Power as something that can lead to the end of the universe, and ties it to the evolution of humanity. Does this sound familiar? Because it is exactly what happens in Getter Robo with the endless evolution of the Getter Emperor.
(Getter Robo drawing by Gurren Lagann director, Hiroyuki Imaishi)
Outside of anime robots, Getter Robo has also greatly influenced video games, as is observable in beloved franchises such as The King of Fighters, in which the classic Team Japan of KoF 94 was inspired by the Getter Trio (the hot blooded leader, the fast second in command, and the judo specialist third member); or Metroid, which directly takes the name of the Shine Spark attack from Getter Robo G.
The breadth of Ken Ishikawa’s influence goes much further than this (even Disney Cartoons like Amphibia reference it), due to how many iconic series he has influenced, and deserves more attention than a VS blog could give it, however it deserves mention and a good few examples. It only be fitting that a mech to save the world would change it so dramatically.

Power Sources
Both of our combatants today run on very special energies that are important to their respective series. Let’s talk about their origins and how they work.
Mazinger Z
Photon Energy
In an excavation around the Fuji Volcanic Belt, the brilliant scientist Doctor Juzo Kabuto discovered a new mineral: Japanium. This new ore had a collection of special properties, which allowed it to get two special uses. The element could be mined and refined to produce Super Alloy Z, the most indestructible metal in the world, which is already pretty damn impressive, but nothing compared to what comes next. When it undergoes nuclear fission, Japanium produces an extraordinary amount of energy [3:45], a power source that Kabuto named Photon Energy. Not only is Photon energy a hundred times more powerful than nuclear energy, it is also completely clean and safe for human exposure.
(The power of Photon Energy)
Doctor Kabuto extracted the Photon Energy at the Photon Light Research Institute, a highly advanced laboratory located at the foot of Mt. Fuji. There, we also demonstrated the power of Photon Energy and how durable Super Alloy Z was to the scientists that would soon aid his grandson in his fight against evil.
(A graph from Mazinger Infinity showcasing the effectiveness of Photon Power compared to regular energy sources)
Using these two new discoveries, Doctor Kabuto created Mazinger Z, an invincible super robot made of Super Alloy Z that runs on photon energy. Outside of just powering the robot, Photon Energy can also be weaponized. Not only can Photon be harnessed and fired into deadly energy beams in the form of the iconic Photon Beams fired from Mazinger’s eyes, but it also energizes Mazinger’s explosives, making them significantly more powerful than conventional weaponry. Super Alloy Z can also be used offensively, as it also composes Mazinger Z’s Iron Cutter Blades and the Drill Missiles, making them extremely sharp to the point where they go through other metals like nothing.
In Great Mazinger we’re introduced to a stronger variant of Super Alloy Z, named Super Alloy New Z. It is used to build Mazinger Z’s successor, Great Mazinger and its weapons. Later, Mazinger Z’s armor is upgraded to the new metal alloy, making it several times as durable as before.
Outside of the original entries, Photon Power has been given more esoteric characteristics and abilities, namely in Shin Mazinger ZERO. In that manga, Photon Power is also a higher power that goes beyond our dimension and directly interacts with forces such as time itself. Through Doctor Kabuto’s creation, Minerva X, he discovered that photons can transport consciousnesses into the past. Not only that, but they’re also responsible for interactions with alternate timelines, and can help manifest alternative versions of Koji Kabuto to aid him in battle.
(Doctor Kabuto explains photonic time travel)
Getter Robo
Getter Rays
Millions of years before humans walked the Earth, the cosmic radiation known as Getter Rays arrived at the planet. Driving the then dominant dinosaurs to near extinction, the Getter Rays played a significant role in the evolution of mammals into humanity, and drove the reptiles to live underground and form the Dinosaur Empire.
(The origins of the Dinosaur Empire and human evolution)
In the far future, the brilliant scientist Doctor Saotome would discover a way to harness the cosmic energy and create the Saotome Getter Rays Research Institute.
Fearing the vengeful return of the Dinosaur Empire, Saotome started engineering the ultimate combat robot to protect humanity, powered by the newfound boundless source of energy, eventually creating the Getter Robo. The Getter Rays are the fundamental power source for Getter Robo and are both used and emitted by it, fueling it from its Getter Reactor tank and being the composition of the powerful Getter Beam. They’re also clean and safe for human contact, despite being extremely deadly for Dinosaurs.
Things, however, are not as simple as they look. Despite initially appearing as just a form of cosmic radiation, Getter Rays are actually an energy connected to the universe itself, and appear to exist since the dawn of time. Getter Rays have a will of their own, and seem to favor humanity over all other sentient species. They have been able to communicate with Getter pilots, showing the secrets of the universe, and even visions of the far future, and even transport them there. They can also, of course, evolve who they choose. Thanks to being capable of retaining an absurd amount of Getter Rays, Shin Getter Robo was awakened and given the power to absorb energy, matter and even consciousnesses.
Getter Rays are also a spiritual energy. When Doctor Saotome was going insane in his last moments, he was visited by the spirits of previously defeated enemies, such as Emperor Gore, the former leader of the Dinosaur Empire. It appears that those who interact with Getter Rays never truly die, as their souls and consciousnesses join in the afterlife because the Getter Rays are interconnected to all living things. Like a distorted version of Buddhist doctrine, enlightenment through the discovery of the interconnectedness of all things is key to spiritual transcendence. However, the Getter takes things to a much more sinister path, as true understanding of the cosmos leads to the realization that humanity’s fate is eternal evolution, one that ends the universe itself.
(All is one)
(Getter’s will, all consuming)
Other continuities don’t change much with Getter Rays, often keeping them purposefully vague. In the original Toei anime, Getter Rays are simply the space energy that helped humans evolve with no real spiritual implications (they’re not even considered radiation for some reason). In Getter Robo Devolution, Getter Rays receive a new backstory, being created by the first sentient race to appear in the universe and considered life itself.
Mechs
Koji Kabuto
Mazinger Z
Height: 18-20 meters
Weight: 20 tons
Power Source: Photon Power Engine
Armor: Super Alloy Z, later upgraded to Super Alloy New Z
When piloting the most powerful super robot of all time, with your grip tightly on all of its handles, tell me, will you become a god or a devil? That was the question Koji Kabuto was faced with, when approached by his old, mad scientist grandpa, Juzo Kabuto. As he had built this absurdly powerful machine to combat the evil Doctor Hell and his minions.
Mazinger Z is an absurdly powerful robot not to be underestimated. Built out of Super Alloy Z, Mazinger has proven to be capable of taking an insane amount of damage and dishing it back out tenfold, and with young prodigy Koji piloting it, the pair would soon prove to be unstoppable, foiling Doctor Hell and Baron Ashura’s plans time and time again.
This being said, it would soon prove to be difficult to fight such powerful forces on his own, even with the help of Boss Borot and Aphrodite A, and he would eventually enlist the help of his successor, Tetsuya Tsurugi, who would pilot the Great Mazinger. Together, they forced the powers of Hell back into hiding, leading to Koji eventually retiring Mazinger Z.
But Koji’s fight wouldn’t end there, when alien prince Duke Fleed arrived on earth, Koji had to help him, using TFO, he would ally with Duke’s Grendizer to fight off the imperial forces from his home planet and help him return home.
Koji would stop mech fighting for a while to become a scientist, but he would put on the old suit one last time when Doctor Hell’s armies invade earth. This time, using the help of his daughter from the future (it’s complicated…) he would supercharge Mazinger Z and travel to an alternate dimension to destroy Hell’s robot and eradicate him for good.
Outside of the original iterations of Mazinger Z (the original manga by Go Nagai and the Toei anime series), countless spinoffs and remakes were created. Among them, we can say Shin Mazinger is the most notable animated one. In it, Mazinger Z’s creation is directly involved with the lost empire of Mycenae. Mazinger Z also gets a very unique upgrade in the form of the God Scrander, a very powerful version of the Scrander fashioned from the hand of Zeus.
Another notable animated version of Mazinger Z would be its appearance in Grendizer U. This anime is a reimagining of the original Grendizer anime and manga, but differs greatly from that in some areas. One of the biggest divergences is the appearance of Mazinger Z. After being destroyed, Mazinger is repaired and upgraded into Mazinger X, a version capable of docking with Grendizer’s Spazers and flying to space.
At last, Shin Mazinger ZERO. In this manga, Mazinger receives different abilities than his usual forms, with the creation of the Seven Black Boxes that grant it new unbelievably powerful skills that it uses to defeat the most fearsome version of Doctor Hell. The seventh Black Box unleashes the most powerful and sinister Mazinger, ZERO.
Mazinkaiser
Height: 23 meters
Weight: 39 tons
Power Source: Photonic Reactor
Armor: Super Alloy New Zα
What if I told you you didn’t need to choose? What if there was a machine so powerful it could surpass the duality itself? This seemed to be the question Juzo had in mind when he designed the MAZINKAISER. Built in secret from even Doctor Kabuto’s son, Mazinkaiser is a Mazin powerful enough to surpass even Great Mazinger.
Featuring mostly upgraded versions of classic Mazinger’s abilities and weapons, Kaiser is a very strong robot that dispach many enemies sent by Doctor Hell, even ones that were completely dominating the previous robots.
The most notable addition to Mazinkaiser’s arsenal is the Kaiser Blade, a massive claymore that cuts through Mecha Beasts like butter and was used to kill Baron Ashura.
In the sequel movie, Mazinkaiser takes on Mazinger Z’s most brutal enemy from the past, the Great General of Darkness. After a grueling battle, Kaiser defeats the General and inverts the plot of the original series where Koji is defeated.
Curiously, the original version of Mazinkaiser was created for Super Robot Wars. As it was planned out, Mazinkaiser in that universe is the classic Mazinger Z from the Toei anime, but mutated and evolved by contact with Getter Rays.
Also, both his themes are massive bangers.
Mazinger ZERO
Height: 30 meters (not included ZERO Scrander), thousands, possibly millions of space-times as God Mazinger ZERO
Weight: Likely 20 tons, thousands, possibly millions of of space-times as God Mazinger ZERO
Power Source: Photon Power Engine
Armor: Super Alloy Z
If you already think Juzo managing to build a photon powered machine that could become a god or a devil for his grandson is already impressive, then you’ll be surprised by his most insane version yet, who built Mazinger Z and installed the seven black boxes that hold his monstrous Mazin Powers into him.
Thanks to the discovery of time travel by sending his Mazinger research data to the past thanks to Minerva X, his robot assistant, Juzo Kabuto managed to live through many lifetimes. Over and over he would live, creating Mazinger Z, before crumbling down by his old age. However, thanks to him being able to receive knowledge from the future, Doctor Kabuto made a much stronger version of Mazinger every time, gradually increasing its capabilities and strength. It reached a point where he created the Seven Black Boxes, artifacts holding incredible powers that were installed into Mazinger Z to be awakened according to the will of the pilot.
The Seven Black Boxes give Mazinger the ability to awaken the powers of regeneration, assimilation, strengthening, higher dimensional prediction, metamorphosis, causality weapon and devil transformation.
After the seventh Black Box is awakened, Mazinger Z transforms into Mazinger ZERO. Instead of being piloted by Koji, Mazinger ZERO is a giant devil god that moves by his own will, with an unstoppable desire to become the strongest super robot who ever existed, which makes him reject any power that could surpass Mazinger Z. ZERO’s uncontrollable nature led to the destruction of the world several times. Every time he was awakened, Minerva X sent Koji’s consciousness to the past, in an attempt to stop ZERO from ever being unleashed.
Alas, it is inevitable. Despite living through numerous cycles of attempting to stop ZERO, Koji could never stop it. ZERO repeatedly destroyed and consumed space and time millions of times, which led to his ascension as a god. After consuming enough timelines, ZERO surpassed the singularity point of God, becoming an almighty deity that is omnipresent and omnipotent across the multiple parallel universes that compose his being.
Thanks to Koji’s idea to try and stop ZERO again, all of the timelines composing ZERO were merged into one. A single space-time where every possibility that would generate another is soon removed. In this world, Mazinger is a multimedia franchise that soon dominated the world as the only super robot to ever exist. A symbol loved by everyone.
Since he reminds him of his defeat at the hands of the Great General of Darkness, Mazinger ZERO hates Great Mazinger and his pilot Tetsuya Tsurugi. Knowing that, of course Tetsuya can’t exist in ZERO’s perfect world. Koji took advantage of that, and recreated the Mazinger Z vs the Great General of Darkness anime movie. Mazinger Z’s defeat at the hands of the Great General and the appearance of Great Mazinger made the fans of Mazinger Z furious, but encouraged them to make their own super robots. Thanks to the anomaly caused by this and Koji’s own special status as the pilot of Mazinger Z, both Tetsuya and Koji were able to leave ZERO’s world.
After Koji creates a new photon engine, both Mazingers are able to leave ZERO for good and start a fight to defeat him. Aided by the new photon spirits born out of the creativity Koji encouraged, Great Mazinger and Mazinger led a massive assault against the demon god. Despite being a big jerk throughout the whole series, however, after being critically damaged by an army of new Souls of Steel, he had a little bit of conversation with Koji, which made him see the new possibilities that came from himself, a world where everyone wants to live in, which made him accept his defeat, exploding, and causing a new world to be born.
Getter Team
Getter Robo
Height: 38 meters (Getter 1 & Getter 2), 20 meters (Getter 3)
Weight: 220 tons (Getter 1), 200 tons (Getter 2), 250 tons (Getter 3) (Don’t ask how that works, we don’t know)
Power Source: Getter Reactor
Armor: Getter Alloy
The original robot was created by Professor Saotome to channel the infinite power of the newly discovered Getter Rays. It was used to fight the resurgence of the Dinosaur Empire and their deadly Mechasaurus, and is present in most adaptations of Getter Robo to an extent. In the original manga, it was created with the intention of being a combat unit from the start, but in Toei and Armageddon, it was originally intended for space exploration.
Getter Robo was designed as a combination of 3 separate aircraft, called the Getter Machines. Each machine has a designation and a pilot. In total, 3 separate combinations can be achieved, with different abilities and designs, by connecting the three Getter Machines in different sequences as three hearts become one.
The three pilots selected to pilot the Getter Machines were Ryoma Nagare, Hayato Jin and Musashi Tomoe, three valiant young men with impressive physical capabilities and a lot of determination. Ryoma Nagare pilots the Getter Eagle, the red Getter Machine. Hayato Jin pilots the Getter Jaguar, the white Getter Machine. Musashi Tomoe pilots the Getter Bear, the yellow Getter Machine.
The three forms that Getter Robo can assume are Getter 1, Getter 2 and Getter 3, each one with a different Getter Machine in the lead.
Getter 1 is formed with Getter Eagle in the front, and controlled by Ryoma. It’s the “main” robot and is focused in aerial combat and close quarters combat. It has a humanoid form, which allows for Ryoma to utilize his karate skills better. It’s outfitted with iconic Getter equipment and powers, such as the Getter Wing, Getter Tomahawk, Getter Beam and many others.
Getter 2 is formed with Getter Jaguar in the front, and controlled by Hayato. It’s the speed focused robot, and equipped with the Getter Drill as both an underground mobility suit and a deadly weapon.
Getter 3 is formed with Getter Bear in the front, and controlled by Musashi. It’s a robot designed for ground and underwater combat, with tank treads for feet. It has extendable arms for grappling and crushing enemies, as well as powerful missiles.
The three pilots need to be in good sync and utilize teamwork to pilot the Getter properly, as attempting the combination without precise timing could end in disaster. The robot gets severely weakened with less than 3 pilots, not operating to its full potential when one or two machines are in autopilot mode.
In the original manga and the Toei continuities, the classic Getter Robo was destroyed to defeat the Dinosaur Empire in a heroic sacrifice by Musashi. In Armageddon, it is a mass produced unit to fight the aliens known as the Invaders. In New Getter Robo, it has more or less the same origin, but created to fight the Onis instead.
Getter Robo G
Height: 50 meters (Dragon & Liger), 45 meters (Poseidon)
Weight: 330 tons (all three)
Power Source: Getter Core
Armor: Getter Alloy
The new and improved Getter Robo, ten times stronger than the original. Taking on the deadly Hyakki Empire, Getter Robo G shows many upgraded features in relation to its predecessor.
The combination features are mostly intact, but the Getter Machines were upgraded to be faster and received new names based on less mundane figures: Dragon, Liger and Poseidon.
The 3 pilots that control Getter Robo G are Ryoma Nagare with the Getter Dragon Machine, Hayato Jin with the Getter Liger Machine and Benkei Kuruma with the Getter Poseidon Machine (replacing Musashi after his death).
Getter Dragon is formed with the Getter Dragon Machine in the lead. It retains the same role as the old Getter 1, but on a whole new level. It has upgraded equipment such as the Mach Wing and the Double Getter Tomahawk. It also features a new special move in the form of the Shine Spark, a deadly attack of accumulated solar energy.
Getter Liger is formed with the Getter Liger Machine in the lead. It’s still the speed and drilling focused Getter formation, with a new Drill with many different functionalities and characteristics such as missiles and a chain.
Getter Poseidon is formed with the Getter Poseidon Machine in the lead. It’s the most changed Getter out of the 3, sporting the ability to change between regular legs and the classic treads as the pilot sees fit. As expected, it still has missiles. Added features are a net and a new special power, the Getter Cyclone.
The Getter Robo G succeeded in defeating the Hyakki Empire, and was taken back to the lab intact for repairs. Unfortunately, in the original manga, it’s involved in a Getter Ray Meltdown accident that takes Benkei’s life and mutates the Getter into an entity called the Saint Dragon.
In Armageddon, the Getter Dragon is also a mass produced robot, iconically piloted by Doctor Saotome, Stinger and Cohen in a fight against Shin Getter, and retaining its original functions.
Shin Getter Robo
Height: 55 meters (Shin Getter 1 & Getter 2), 30 meters (Shin Getter 3)
Weight: 290 tons (all three)
Power Source: Getter Core
Armor: Polyformic Alloy
The ultimate creation of Doctor Saotome. The Shin Getter Robo takes all the abilities and functionalities of its predecessors to frightening new heights, and a few new (Lovecraftian) tricks. With a new Getter Core capable of infinitely retaining Getter Rays, the Shin Getter also displays terrifying potential for evolution when awakened, along with powers such as matter and energy absorption. The Getter also shows a consciousness, being capable of talking to the pilots and showing them visions of the future and the past, and even giving them a glimpse of the secrets of the universe.
As the pilots learn about the scary true nature of the Getter Rays, a sentient cosmic energy that has existed since the beginning of the universe, the Shin Getter takes on new enemies in the Metal Beasts, and also the resurrection of the Dinosaur Empire.
This particular Getter has a large roster of pilots, starting with the same team as the Getter Robo G in its early activation. In the end of the Getter Robo Go manga, it is piloted by Go Ichimonji in the Shin Eagle, Tahir in the Shin Jaguar and a returning Ryoma Nagare in the Shin Bear. The Shin Get Machines are naturally faster than the previous models, and receive simpler namesakes, as do the robot’s forms.
Shin Getter 1 is the aerial combat form wielding the biggest Getter Tomahawk yet. It also displays absurd flight speeds, to the point Ryoma could barely handle it at first. It is the most used form when it awakens, displaying new esoteric abilities and talking directly to its pilots.
Shin Getter 2 is once again the underground and high speed combat formation. Equipped with a huge drill on one arm and a claw on the other, Getter 2’s destructive potential was taken to a whole new level.
Shin Getter 3 is back with treads as its locomotion method. Shin Getter 3 has enhanced strength on its extendable arms to better crush and toss around enemies, and an obscene amount of hidden missiles.
In the manga, Shin Getter absorbed a weapon from the Dinosaur Empire that was going to destroy the Earth, growing to immense size. Afterwards, it flew to Mars and began the process of terraforming the planet, with the fate of its pilots unknown.
In Armageddon, Shin Getter Robo doesn't have the same esoteric powers as its manga counterpart. It is first piloted by the Getter Robo G team, then three newcomers: Go, Kei And Gai. In the climax, the Getter Robo G team is back piloting it, and they ride to Getter Valhalla in a fight to defeat the Invaders once and for all.
Getter Emperor
Height: ???, thousands of lightyears at biggest depiction
Weight: ???,
Power Source: Getter Rays
Armor: ???
In the grim darkness of the far future, humanity would evolve to the point of expanding into space and start colonizing the stars. After starting a war with an advanced alien civilization from another galaxy called the Andromeda Country, humanity was almost wiped out. Out of nowhere, Getter Emperor appeared from a forgotten solar system to save humanity. With this new power, the human race started spreading into space and conquering the universe.
While humanity saw the Getter as a savior, other space faring civilizations saw it as a destroyer, an ever evolving evil that must be stopped before it consumes the entire universe.
The Getter Emperor is composed of three machines, just like every other Getter. This time, each machine is a massive flagship of planetary size, wielding enough firepower to destroy planets and stars. The only form Getter Emperor assumes in Getter media is Getter Emperor 1.
Getter pilots from the past have managed to see the Emperor through space-time travel, such as Ryoma Nagare in Shin Getter Robo and Takuma Nagare in Getter Robo Arc. Both experiences were very brief, as they were soon sent their way to a different point in time.
Not much is known about who (or what) pilots the Getter Emperor. We hear Ryoma’s voice when it transforms for the first time and see Ryoma’s silhouette inside the Emperor in its brief cameo in Getter Robo Armageddon, so it is likely Ryoma was chosen to control it among the countless consciousnesses that joined the afterlife in Getter Rays.
Getter Emperor is not shown using many powers, mostly relying on its size and absorption to destroy and consume pilots. It also features a massive Getter Beam and, in its Bandai Soul of Chogokin figure, it is seen wielding a massive Getter Tomahawk.
As expected, Emperor appears in a few side media for Getter Robo. In the Armageddon OVA, we see Getter Emperor and the Getter Armada in the very last moments of the anime. In Anthology, a good few stories are centered around the Emperor and its devastating potential for destruction. The most notable side media to feature Getter Emperor is Devolution, in which simulations are created to try to force Getter Robo to evolve into emperor in a controlled state.
Unfortunately, thanks to Ishikawa’s passing, the original Getter Robo Saga remains unfinished, so we can’t know for sure what exactly would happen to the Emperor in the future. Thanks to various statements across the series, we know one thing: the end of the universe has a name, and it’s Getter Emperor.
Experience and Skill
Koji Kabuto
Starting off as a brash and immature high school student, Koji’s character evolved greatly in his adventures piloting Mazinger Z. At the start of each version, Koji’s only shown to be skilled in piloting motorcycles, but in order to match Doctor Hell’s threats and save Japan from the mechanical beasts, Koji had to become adept at hand to hand combat, marksmanship and piloting not just aircraft, but Mazinger himself.
Koji Kabuto has faced several enemies in his experience as the pilot of Mazinger Z. One of the most prominent common enemies he faces are Doctor Hell and Baron Ashura’s Mechanical Beasts. Each of them has different abilities and movesets, to make it difficult for Koji to learn how to defeat multiple of them rapidly. Unfortunately for our villains, Koji is a brilliant pilot, and every encounter against a mechanical beast simply lets him get more and more of a handle of how Mazinger’s abilities and mobility work. As he adapts to each beast, he becomes a better and stronger pilot, eventually able to face off against the big bads themselves in close fights, even when Mazinger is at a numerical disadvantage or severely damaged.
But combat isn’t the only thing Koji is good at. Just like his father and grandfather, Koji also grows to be a brilliant scientist. As shown in the manga and Toei continuities, Koji would eventually go to study abroad and leave Great Mazinger and Tetsuya as the protector of Japan while he’s out. After coming back to defeat the Mycenaean Empire, he leaves again and becomes a scientist at NASA, creating an impressive UFO-like ship called the TFO to aid Grendizer in his fight against the Vegan Empire. He does all this on top of being one of the scientists and engineers that made the other aircraft called the Spazers after studying the technology from Duke Fleed’s home planet.
In Mazinger Z: Infinity, the finale of the Toei Mazinger continuity, Koji becomes the head scientist at the Photon Research Laboratory, and together with Doctor Yumi and the other scientists, revolutionizes the world’s energy system. This leads to several advances in technology that improve the quality of life in Japan and the world.
(His father was also brilliant scientist after all)
Going to Mazinger ZERO, not much has changed about his experience and skills, he's still as formidable as his counterparts, the big difference in ZERO continuity, is that he stuck in dozens of timeline repeating caused by Minerva X, which caused him to see the memory of himself in the previous timeline, and allow him to draw out and use the strength of Mazinger Z, making him able to easily harm the superhuman cyborg like Dr. Hell and break the canopy of Z’s Hover Pilder, and these feats were performed in his human body, which is nothing when compared to himself when he becomes a cyborg after the Great Mazin War.
His cyborg body provides him greater reaction speed and boasts exceptional strength and flexibility, it is also able to endure the injury that'll definitely kill a man. His cyborg body also possesses the Airborne Elemental Condenser, which allows him to synthesize the chemical elements in the atmosphere to create new materials in order to create human skin for himself. It is also capable of creating his iconic pilot suit, repairing the large open wound on his body, or materializing the countless phantom Rocket Punches from parallel worlds. However, he no longer possessed the cyborg body anymore after the desperate battle with Gordon Hell, but he received it back again after Minerva X caused the timeline to repeat in cycle 2,800, this time, Koji’s body is 60% cyborg, but there's no doubt that he's still as formidable as before, but Koji lose his cyborg body again after Minerva X caused the timeline to repeat again.
Aside from his impressive characteristics, his mental strength is extremely powerful too. Normally, an ordinary human whose body turns into a full cyborg would almost certainly lose their mental equilibrium and panic, but Koji is completely stable after he turned into a full cyborg. He's able to endure the pain during the deadly battle. Koji is a type of a man who'll struggle till the end, never give up even if he's stuck in the countless timeline repeating, or even when he knows that he can't fight Mazinger ZERO.
He possesses a powerful charisma, able to earn the complete trust of several leaders of major powers of the world from his motivational speech alone.
Koji also possess an impressive intelligence that's far greater than any of his counterparts, demonstrated when he's able to build the mosaic Photon Power Engine, something that God Mazinger ZERO who's an omniscient can't recognize about it, and allow Koji to call forth the new souls of steel from the world that God Mazinger ZERO doesn't know of to defeat God Mazinger ZERO himself.
(A mind to challenge an almighty God)
Overall, Koji is an incredibly smart and resourceful pilot that managed to become a great warrior by adapting to and overcoming the absurd sequence of hardships that were thrown his way, and managed to live up to the legacy of his family’s name by becoming a master scientist. He may fall sometimes, but his sheer determination, courage, intelligence and quick thinking earns him the title of one of the greatest mecha pilots of all time, inspiring other legends for decades on end.
Getter Team
Chosen by the brilliant scientist Doctor Saotome, the original Getter Team is a group of teenagers with attitude whose hearts unite as one in order to pilot the most powerful robot in the world. Each Getter pilot has special characteristics that make them each fit their assigned role perfectly. Through the several models and continuities of Getter Robo, many different teams have sat in the cockpit of the Getter Machines in order to fight insurmountable odds and brutal enemies. Let’s go through the main ones and take a look at their accomplishments.
The original Getter Robo team consists of Ryoma Nagare, Musashi Tomoe, and Hayato Jin (in most continuities). All three Getter pilots display impeccable piloting skills in their Getter Machines and precise marksmanship with the robot’s many ranged weapons. They weaponize their teamwork in order to use the Getter to its full potential and perform complex maneuvers and transformation tactics.
As the martial arts expert, Ryoma is the most prolific at hand to hand fighting in the team. He took down several dojo and trained karate masters in his quest to avenge his father, and took his talent to new heights when piloting Getter 1. During his time in the original Getter Robo, Ryoma fought the Dinosaur Empire at a young age and quickly became very skilled at piloting and flying, even though he had no experience with that before. He stayed as a pilot throughout Getter Robo G and early into Shin Getter Robo, until leaving to form a family and manage his own dojo. Ryoma would later come back, piloting the same Shin Getter Robo, which would lead him to more fighting against even more bizarre opponents before reaching the end of his journey in Mars, granting him several years of experience as a martial artist and a pilot.
(Ryoma’s background as a martial arts earned him his position as the trio’s combat expert)
Hayato is the brains of the team, boasting an absurd 300 IQ since elementary school. During high school, he founded a student guerrilla unit and took over his campus. Since then, he has been an expert at hand to hand combat, dispatching opponents brutally with precision strikes and his sharp nails. After an initial conflict with the Dinosaur Empire, Hayato joined the Getter team and would rapidly gain piloting skills, becoming a valuable ally in the fight against the reptiles. As the Getter 2 pilot, Hayato is all about using his robot’s speed to overwhelm enemies and attack their weak points. His overall role is to devise plans to defeat enemies that seem invincible at first, by quickly finding a strategy to work around the strengths of the enemy through smart use of Getter’s different modes and weapons. Hayato is also a scientist at the Saotome Getter Rays Research Institute, aiding Professor Saotome in his experiments with Getter Rays and discovering new ways to fight the Dinosaur Empire. After Getter Robo, Hayato’s role in Getter Robo G remained the same, with him acquiring more experience against different foes. He also piloted the early Shin Getter Robo model, retiring as a pilot afterwards but piloting it briefly again a few years later. Hayato remained a scientist and continued giving valuable information to the subsequent Getter Teams, and also personally engineered Getter Robo Go and Getter Robo Arc alongside the scientists at the Saotome Institute.
(The IQ of a genius…)
(...And the savagery of a monster)
Musashi was experienced in fighting from the start, being an expert when it comes to survival in the mountains and knowing many judo techniques. His role as the pilot of Getter 3 puts him mostly in close quarter situations, overwhelming Mechasaurus with grapples and holds. His time as a pilot didn’t last long, as he bravely sacrificed himself while fighting multiple Mechasauri and helping defeat the Dinosaur Empire for good.
(Musashi’s courage was his strongest point, and led him to perform an heroic sacrifice to save humanity)
In the Toei canon, the backstory of the members of Getter Team is toned down, and so Ryoma, Hayato and Musashi are just students in the same school. The three excel in sports that match their roles, such as Musashi being in a Judo club, etc. In Armageddon, the classic Getter Team are veterans from the war against the Invaders, gathering several years of experience and mostly maintain their roles in the story. Subsequent adaptations such as New Getter Robo don’t change much about them.
In Getter Robo G, we’re introduced to Benkei Kuruma, who replaces Musashi as the pilot of the third Getter Machine after Musashi’s death. Having largely the same role, Benkei performs similar feats both inside and outside his machine, and has a good rapport with the team. Getter G decimates the Hyakki Empire and pushes them back into space. Benkei dies in the events of the awakening of the Dragon, so he couldn't gather much experience as a pilot. In Armageddon, he is a war veteran just like the original Getter Team. In New Getter Robo, a character called Benkei Musashibo is sort of a composite of Benkei and Musashi, having a background as a wandering bandit turned monk, fighting through many battles as the pilot of Getter 3.
(Just like the previous Getter 3 pilot, the hero Benkei becomes one with the Getter)
In the Getter Robo Go manga, the final pilots of the Shin Getter are Ryoma Nagare, Go Ichimonji and Messiah Tahir. Go is a hot blooded young pilot that formerly controlled the Getter Robo Go, after having received hardcore military training and being chosen by Hayato himself. He served in many battles against the Metal Beasts and was an equal to Ryoma in hand to hand combat, showing a lot of potential and ability in fighting. Tahir’s psychic abilities grant him the ability to “talk” to the Getter, and so he doesn’t need any training to pilot the Getter, allowing him to show off great skills despite his young age and lack of experience. Together, the Shin Getter team crushed the return of the Dinosaur Empire.
(Go was an impressive recruit, even for a Getter pilot)
In Getter Robo Armageddon, Shin Getter Robo is piloted originally by a trio of newcomers, in Go, Kei and Gai. In this continuity, Go was literally made to pilot, as he is a clone/artificial human created from Saotome’s DNA. As such, he displays impressive fighting prowess comparable to his forebear. Kai and Gai are young soldiers, and as such have limited military training, but have the chance to develop more experience fighting the Invaders, quickly learning how to control such a complex machine. The second set of pilots is the same as those that pilot Getter Robo G: Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei, three highly skilled veterans whose abilities we have already gone over.
The Getter Emperor is millions of years old, and has assimilated uncountable beings into itself. As a result of that, Getter is a hivemind and should have logically accumulated the experience and intelligence of an absurd number of living organisms, many of them highly militarized and technologically advanced alien civilizations. As Armageddon and the manga suggest, the “main” pilot the Getter consciousness draws from could be Ryoma, so it’s reasonable to assume standard tactics and fighting style of the Emperor are based on Nagare.
In short, the Getter teams across all series are a force to be reckoned with. No matter who’s behind the wheel, going up against them is a suicide mission. They’ve taken down armies and hundreds if not thousands of threats to mankind. Individually they’re beasts, but when put together, team Getter is unstoppable, no matter what mech they’re sitting in.
Arsenals and Abilities
Mazinger Z
Photon Power Engine
Mazinger Z’s power supply that utilizes Photon Energy generated from the fission of Japanium, providing energy for using various destructive weapons. However, in some incarnations, constant use of energy-based attacks like Breast Fire or running at top speed over extended periods of time will cause it to overload and thus render Mazinger paralyzed for a while.
Mazin Power
Koji can temporarily shut down the power distribution of Mazinger’s Photon Power Engine, gradually accumulating the power inside him before releasing it all at once for an explosive boost in instant output, momentarily increasing the robot’s overall capabilities both physicality and attack-wise, as demonstrated when he used Z’s powered up Koshiryoku Beam to kill Viscount Pygman. In the continuity of Shin Mazinger ZERO and its sequel, Mazin Power is tied to Mazinger Z’s unique system of seven black boxes that hold his hidden powers, each of them giving him a new ability that upon activation, emits a massive light and causes a gravitational fluctuation.
Regeneration: Allows Mazinger Z to near-instantaneously regenerate from any damage, by disintegrating his severed body parts and re-materialize them at the atomic level.
Absorption: Allows Mazinger Z to absorb energy attacks and convert them into power, able to absorb even physical matter after his transformation into Mazinger ZERO, as demonstrated when he assimilated Great Mazinkaiser's Kaiser Sword.
Enhancement: Boosts all of Mazinger Z’s overall capabilities in response to his opponent’s power, as demonstrated when he used the Enhancement to enhance his overall capabilities in order to absorb energy from Gordon Hell’s Finger Shock Extension. Enhancement can additionally be used to enhance other black boxes' abilities for even more versatile uses as well.
Higher Dimensional Prediction: Enhances Mazinger Z's situation-simulation ability to the point where it is indistinguishable from predicting the future, allowing Koji to read the trajectory of wind to escape Gordon Hell's Gordon Cyclone. When used at maximum power with Enhancement, Z can predict all possibilities and find a way to break through to a future where he’ll win.
Causality Weapon: Gives Mazinger Z the ability to transplant desirable outcomes from countless possibilities in parallel worlds directly into the current world, even if it is just only a minuscule possibility. As Mazinger ZERO, he can use Causality Weapon to transfer the event from parallel worlds to his current world to change reality, which he once used this against Great Mazinger to rendered its Airborne Elemental Condenser to rendered useless by bringing the event from the parallel world where Great's Super Alloy New Z was destroyed into his current world.
Devil Transformation: Transforms Mazinger Z into Mazinger ZERO, which greatly increases his overall capabilities. The Devil Transformation can be triggered when a power that could surpass Mazinger Z appeared, or when ZERO’s ego found a person who shared the same goal with him, which will cause him to forcefully take over Mazinger Z and reject Koji before letting that person release the Majin Powers.
Hover Pilder
A hovercraft which acts as Koji’s command center to activate and pilot Mazinger through his fighting spirit [8:40] by docking onto his head port with VTOL fans at the ends of its wings, folding up when landing vertically. It is armed with a pair of Pilder Lasers that shoot photon beams to dispatch enemies and Pilder Missiles fired from the jet engine compartments, also able to release a smokescreen to disrupt an enemy’s vision, drop an emergency life raft and be remotely controlled. The Hover Pilder has access to a radio, radar camera that captures high-speed videos, geiger counter and a radar, which can be used to track enemy movements and incoming missiles. In Shin Mazinger ZERO, it possesses a mechanical brain that allows Mazinger to move on his own when activated. Being built of Super Alloy Z and also upgraded with Super Alloy New Z, Koji’s Pilders should be as resistant as Tetsuya’s Brain Condor, which withstood being submerged in lava.
Jet Pilder
An upgraded Pilder which uses large jet engines mounted on the rear and sides, allowing Koji to fly at Mach 3. It also uses a hovering fan at the bottom for landing on Mazinger’s head, can be remotely called and is equipped with a rear view telescope for seeing pursuing foes. While retaining the Pilder Missiles, Koji can also utilize 20mm machine guns and Pilder Beams, which are powerful enough to destroy Unicorn Σ2's wings.
Rocket Punch
Mazinger Z’s most famous attack (paying respect to Giant Robo’s brother). He fires his forearm out of the elbow through built-in photon power rockets, striking down and punching through enemies with the fist under its own free will [6:32] before returning back by using fingertip thrusters. Mazinger can launch both of his fists simultaneously, and can also make them grab enemies to either trip them, allow another fist to punch or pin them into the ground. They can also turn around to hit from the back, chase enemies down while trying to dodge and swerve to avoid attacks midair.
Iron Cutter
A pair of retractable razor-sharp forearm blades made from Super Alloy Z as they release out of the sides while a Rocket Punch is performed, used to slash and cut enemies. Mazinger Z can also utilize it as a melee weapon and even spin his fists without shooting them to drill through enemies.
Daisharin Rocket Punch
Also known as Giant Swing Rocket Punch, Mazinger Z swings both of his arms around at rapid speeds as he builds up momentum before firing his fists off as they spin around, increasing the attack’s power enough to destroy Mechanical Beasts that cannot be defeated with a normal Rocket Punch.
Chain Punch
A version of the Rocket Punch, where Mazinger Z’s fist is connected to his upper arm by a length of chain, allowing him to use it to tie around a rock outcrop while being dragged by Deviler X1, then to grab it out of the sky and pull them closer. (COME HERE!)
Kyoukagata Rocket Punch
A powered up version of Mazinger Z’s regular Rocket Punch, which was reinforced with stronger and bigger armor that gives out more destructive damage and used once to defeat Jeiser J1. In Shin Mazinger ZERO, it releases the powerful air from the six holes around the wrist area, causing the fist to spin at high speed like a drill and create a mini tornado around the right forearm of Mazinger Z, before firing it to pulverize the Grand Marshall of Hell’s lower half.
Mazin Kick
Mazinger Z performs a powerful Rider Kick midair as he drops towards the ground. He can also perform a spinning roundhouse variant.
Koshiryoku Beam
Also known as Photon Power Beam, Mazinger Z can fire two laser beams of photonic energy out from his eyes. Can be used to paralyze enemies, incinerate trees and people, shoot two targets at the same time with one beam apiece, snipe from far distances and shoot missiles out of the air. Its output can be increased to fire out a huge, powerful energy beam that reaches into the atmosphere [17:09 to 17:25]. In Shin Mazinger ZERO, Koshiryoku Beam is capable of giving Dr. Hell an astral body, and transporting him 10,000 years into the past.
Koshiryoku Beam Special
Mazinger Z can combine both of his Koshiryoku Beams together into a single, powerful swirling photon beam attack.
Rust Hurricane
A gust of wind mixed in with acid that is capable of rusting any metal that comes into contact with it. Those affected will have their structure extremely weakened that it practically dissolves, allowing for Mazinger to finish them off with ease. It also disintegrates people meaning its acid properties aren't just exclusive to metal. This move works underwater as well but it won’t corrode anything.
Cross Hurricane
Upon being upgraded into Mazinger X, the robot uses his mouth grill to exhale very strong winds mixed with electricity that not only just disintegrate enemies entirely, but also disables their technology and robotic enemies.
Breast Fire
Mazinger Z charges up the heat sinks on his chest (that pose looks familiar) and then fires out an extremely intense beam of concentrated heat (which is about 30,000 degrees Celsius in the Toei anime), that is hot enough to completely melt enemies and overpower beam attacks. Its heat output can be increased to shoot an even more powerful beam called “Serious Breast Fire”, used to destroy Saluud and Glossam X01 whose high-heat beam cannon overpowered a normal Breast Fire. [pg 76 to 85]
Missile Punch
Mazinger Z opens his midsection to reveal a missile bay, firing out powerful missiles from it to blow up enemies. He is able to instantly manufacture them for rapid firing, and can shoot four missiles in quick succession.
Drill Missile
The original drill weapon in animanga history. Small needle-like missiles fired from the ports in Mazinger Z’s arms that spin at high speed while flying at Mach 3, giving them great piercing power. They can also be used for stabbing enemies and pinning them to the ground.
Finger Missile
Mazinger Z can fire the last joints of his fingertips as miniature missiles, a singular being powerful enough to destroy Dayan N4 by exploding from the inside.
Arm Missile
Mazinger Z can retract his forearms to shoot four normal-sized missiles out of his arms at once, which are powerful enough to blow off Hell King Gordon’s head. [pg 07 to pg 08]
Reitou Beam
Mazinger Z can shoot intense cold beams of freezing energy from his antennae (that reach about -180 degrees Celsius), allowing him to put down fires that melted rock into lava and quickly encase enemies solid like Apollo A1, who’s hot enough to melt buildings in proximity.
High-Voltage Current
Mazinger Z can electrify his entire body with a powerful high-voltage current to paralyze enemies by shocking them, used to disable two Brothas clinging to him as they attempt to break into his cockpit. It is likely as powerful as Aphrodite A’s, who disabled Basil F7’s electromagnetic plates latching onto him.
Electromagnetic Wave Attack
Mazinger Z can discharge electromagnetic waves from the fingertips, used to electrocute underground enemies like Blaster A7 through the water while it is digging down in a tunnel. As shown in Shin Mazinger ZERO, he can also create a field of electromagnetism as well.
Mazinger Boomerang
As shown in a flashback in UFO Robo Grendizer vs. Great Mazinger, Mazinger Z can remove one of the heat sinks from his chest and then fling it at enemies like a boomerang.
Mazin Jump
Mazinger Z can perform extremely high jumps with photon-powered rockets mounted on the bottom of his feet, able to reach far distances as demonstrated when he grabbed Aphrodite A’s rockets midair while running and leaping from the seafloor back to the surface. Jets can additionally be used to maneuver underwater through propelling and blasting enemies back.
Barriers
Mazinger Z can summon a force field around himself, which can be used to block and reflect attacks back at the enemy, as shown when he deflected Gromazen R9‘s ion ray fired at him. He also has an Anti-Wave Barrier, which protects him from supersonic attacks.
Fire Extinguisher
A chemical reserve located in Mazinger Z’s mouth grill, used to put out fires as shown when he extinguished those engulfing Aphrodite A.
Jet Scrander
A winged jet pack-like aircraft unit that automatically docks onto Mazinger Z’s back, allowing him to fly at mach speeds and granting him extra weaponry. It can also function underwater, fold its wings back when using Daisharin Rocket Punch and remotely engage against aerial threats. Mazinger Z can also use the Scrander as a gigantic bludgeoning blade.
In Grendizer U, upon Mazinger X’s upgrade, the Scrander Kai was given dual jet engines that allow him to fly at even higher speeds [13:55 to 14:03] and two additional back wings, giving it the shape of a cross.
Scrander Cut
Mazinger Z can cut enemies apart with the Jet Scrander’s razor-sharp wings by flying towards them.
Southern Cross Knives
Shuriken blade projectiles made from Super Alloy Z that are rapid-fired out of the Jet Scrander’s wing ports, three from each. Also has some degree of homing properties, as shown when Mazinger Z shot them into the sky and they went straight towards Mechanical Beasts.
Scrander Haken
After Z launches the Rocket Punches, he extends the wings of Jet Scrander like a whip sword and accelerates all of his own built-in jets (including two that were installed in his arms) and those of Jet Scrander to make himself spin at high speed and slash the opponent with the sharp wings of Jet Scrander.
God Scrander
Modified from Zeus’ severed arm which served as a powerful source of photonic energy, the God Scrander has much bigger and stronger wings, even being able to fly at even faster speeds than normally and gives Mazinger Z new attacks.
Big Bang Punch
With the God Scrander, Mazinger Z transforms into a gigantic Rocket Punch similar to Zeus’ fist while glowing gold as he launches himself at overwhelming speed, being powerful enough to cause planetary shockwaves and huge explosions.
100 Rocket Punch Barrage
With the God Scrander, Mazinger Z can summon hundreds of fists and launch all of them at once for a powerful attack. The fists then combine into a gigantic version of the Rocket Punch while flying at an enemy to deliver a finishing blow.
Cosmo Special
A giant spacecraft that can be assembled by combining the Double, Marine and Drill Spazers together and then attaching to Mazinger X’s back, allowing him to fly into space and reach the moon. [3:02 to 3:29] Koji can order the Spazers to disassemble in order to allow their pilots to attack enemies by themselves. [12:23 to 12:39]
Mazinkaiser
Kaiser Pilder
The Pilder that Koji gets when he receives the Mazinkaiser robot. It’s functionally the same as Mazinger’s Pilder but is much faster and sleeker in design. It also has cannons on its nose and wings that are capable of shooting laser beams. Its canopy is so well shut that it's capable of preventing the magma from entering into the cockpit, keeping Koji safe from it.
Turbo Smasher Punch
Similar to Mazinger Z’s iconic Rocket Punch and Great Mazinger’s Drill Pressure Punch, Mazinkaiser clenches his fist and rotates his forearms at high speed before shooting them out of its arms to destroy the enemy from a far away distance while creating the mini tornado effect around his forearms. It's capable of pushing back the gigantic sword of Hell King Gordon or even destroying several Battle Beasts within one use.
Kaiser Knuckle
Mazinkaiser rotates his forearms at high speed, but without shooting them out of his arms. Instead, Mazinkaiser will utilize the rotating forearms in close combat by landing dozens of punches at the enemy, with the rotating forearms giving more additional force to the punches, capable of damaging the Great General of Darkness’ head and caused the blood to spill from the face on his chest through each punch that Mazinkaiser landed on him. Kaiser Knuckle can also serve as a preparation before using Turbo Smasher Punch as well.
Koshiryoku Beam
A large laser beam that Kaiser can use to slice through enemies like butter. Moves at the speed of light and has some of the greatest cutting potential out of all of Mazinger’s arsenal. Mazinkaiser’s Koshiryoku Beam is very powerful, as it is able to instantly disintegrate the Mechanical Beast like Kazimov T7 into several tiny pieces when it hits, cutting through Vulcan P5 and Flying Fortress Ghoul at the same time, and disintegrate the Battle Beast like Dante into nothing within a few seconds.
Rust Tornado
Similar to Mazinger Z’s Rust Hurricane, Mazinkaiser releases a triple powerful tornado mixed with acid out of his mouth grill, capable of corroding away several Mechanical Beasts like Genoa M9, Abdullah U6, and Ginrai S1 into dust within one single use. It is capable of corroding the general class Battle Beasts like Caesar and the lower part of Mount Fuji into dust at the same time as well, despite regular Battle Beasts can withstood Vayon Beta’s corrosive Rust Hurricane, which is capable of blowing away the top of two pyramids, meaning Rust Tornado is capable of corroding those who’s resistant to the corrosion. Additionally, Rust Tornado seems to be imbued with an effect akin to violent electricity or photonic energy around itself.
Giganto Missile
Mazinkaiser fires a gigantic missile from his torso that’s capable of blowing up a Mechanical Beast like Kingdan X10, and leaves nothing but smoke in its wake. Much more powerful than any of the base Mazinger’s missiles.
Fire Blaster
Mazinkaiser’s version of Breast Fire, much more powerful than the Breast Fire used by Mazinger Z which can already burn the enemy at 30,000 degrees Celsius. Hot enough to melt enemies and burn through large walls. Mazinkaiser’s beam with the greatest area of effect. The Fire Blaster is easily capable of overpowering the flaming breath from a General class Battle Beast like Draydou, which overpowered Breast Fire and blew up Daion Gamma with ease.
Glacial Beam
Similar to the Reitou Beam that's used by Mazinger Z, Mazinkaiser fires a beam of ice from his antennas that's capable of freezing the entire body of General class Battle Beast like Hadias in the ice, and causing him to break away into several tiny pieces.
Dynamite Tackle
As shown in the manga, Mazinkaiser charges his whole body with photonic energy before charging towards his enemies while performing a powerful tackle.
Kaiser Nova
Mazinkaiser’s most powerful attack in the manga, in which he charges up an incredible amount of photonic energy from his body all at once, before releasing it in a single gigantic burst that causes a massive destruction. However, it is pretty much a suicide attack, with the Kaiser Pilder being ejected first to ensure Koji wouldn’t die in the explosion.
Kaiser Blade
A large broadsword that is stored inside Mazinkaiser's chest. When Mazinkaiser releases the Kaiser Blade, he'll form up a gigantic bright sphere around himself, capable of pushing away Hell King Gordon several meters away, despite Hell King Gordon being far larger than himself, then the sphere will cause a large red explosion that leaves a large crater around Mazinkaiser. Each swing of Kaiser Blade is capable of cutting through the body of Hell King Gordon with ease. It is capable of cutting Hell King Gordon’s sword as well, which is unscratched from being hit by Turbo Smasher Punch and Koshiryoku Beam.
In the movie, instead of releasing the sword from the chest, Mazinkaiser releases a pair of one handed swords from his shoulders without causing a destructive effect like the one that was released from the chest. This pair of swords are extremely durable, being able to withstand being smashed many times by the Great General of Darkness' sword without any scratches. Mazinkaiser can also combine the use of a pair of Kaiser Blades and Turbo Smasher Punch by holding the Kaiser Blades and shooting Turbo Smasher Punch away, capable of pushing back the Great General of Darkness and forcing him to let go of his sword.
Kaiser Scrander
A wing attachment of Mazinkaiser that allows him to fly high into the sky within a few seconds. When Mazinkaiser was stuck in a lava inside Mount Fuji, he emits a massive beam of light that’s blown through the magma to summon the Kaiser Scrander to himself. Kaiser Scrander can easily go submerged into the lava without any problems, and when it is attached with Mazinkaiser, the mecha is able to get out of the volcanic Mount Fuji just by breaking through the summit of the mountain from the inside of it.
In the movie, Kaiser Scrander can be summoned by having Koji shout “Kaiser Scrander!”, then it’ll automatically fly towards Mazinkaiser, in which, during its flight toward the mecha, it was shown to be capable of easily digging through the ground before Mazinkaiser will use his built-in rockets under his feet to make itself jump extremely high into the air, and have his back attached with Kaiser Scrander by having Koji shout “Scrander Cross!”.
Scrander Boomerang
An attack that Mazinkaiser used when he activated Mazin Power. he'll launch off the Kaiser Scrander from his back before grabbing it and throwing it spin like a boomerang, capable of decapitating the extremely large flying fortress like Demonika in half.
Scrander Cutter Spiral
Mazinkaiser flies at a high speed and uses the Kaiser Scrander’s sharp bladed wings to cut down everything in his path by flying in a spiral pattern.
Mazinger ZERO
Breast Fire
A much stronger variation of the standard attack that’s more powerful than Dynamic Fire Nova (which itself has enough energy to equal that of a supernova and creates an explosion bigger than the planet), capable of incinerating everything in its path. During its first use, it melted the entire Kanto region, vaporized Tokyo Bay and exposed the Earth’s mantle.
Rust Hurricane
A blackened and stronger version of the standard attack. It has enough power to obliterate Mount Fuji and cause devastation on a global scale with a single use.
Southern Cross Knives
ZERO releases countless cross-shaped blades seemingly made of photonic energy, which can track his opponent from the ZERO Scrander.
Iron Cutter
ZERO causes a pair of blades on his forearm to change its form into a gigantic blade around his fist before being fired at an opponent, bisecting them with violence force. It can cut through Great Mazinger’s Super Alloy New Z with ease.
Koshiryoku Beam
ZERO closes his eyes and then opens them, releasing beams of photonic energy from his eyes before it separates into a barrage of smaller beams capable of causing dozens of gigantic explosions that can be seen from space.
Kikaidou Majin Karate: Hell Cutter
ZERO shapeshifts his right arm into a gigantic blade, before rapidly flipping himself at high speed and slashing the ground with violence force, causing a massive shockwave that dismantles both the Earth and the moon in an instant.
Absorption
ZERO’s impressive absorption ability allows him to absorb 30 Mechanical Beasts, Kaiser Sword and Great Booster into himself. This also extends to something that isn’t physical, like Koji’s senses and emotions, and he almost consumed Z’s ego if Koji didn’t grab it to bring it with him. Koji also stated that Dr. Hell will lose his will to ZERO’s own will. Damn, ZERO surely is a gluttonous beast.
Evolution
Juzo and Dr. Hell stated that ZERO is capable of auto-evolution, he also continued to evolve himself as he mowed down everything in his path. His back grew the Jet Scrander out of nothing after he bit the wings of Baron Ashura’s Mechanical Beast. With all these feats, it is safe to say that ZERO’s evolution rate is very aggressive.
Time Manipulation/Travel
The Messenger of ZERO can rewind time to the point that he sent himself and Koji to multiple of the previous timelines, and the messenger stated that God Mazinger ZERO is capable of rewinding time just like him as well.
Memory Manipulation
Within his ideal world, God Mazinger ZERO can cause Koji’s memory to become foggy.
Existence Erasure
Within his ideal world, God Mazinger ZERO can delete one’s existence.
Mind Manipulation
Within his ideal world, God Mazinger ZERO can force everyone to think that he’ll always win.
Getter Robo
Getter Robo
Getter Reactor
An energy tank that contains the Getter Rays to let the Getter Robo harness its power, which also allows it to overheat itself by expelling the rays to melt organic life and metal, including itself due to the extreme flow of the energy. As a last ditch effort, ripping out the reactor from Getter’s chest will cause a destructive meltdown that wipes out nearly anything in a blast radius. (you will not be forgotten, Musashi)
Getter Machines
Jet-like aircraft units (Ryoma’s Eagle, Hayato’s Jaguar and Musashi’s Bear) that serve as the components to the Getter Robo and are composed of Getter Alloy, a shape-memory alloy that allow the aircrafts to change their shape in order to combine and separate to quickly change between three forms and escape dangerous situations through respective “Switch On!” and “Open Get!” maneuvers.
They are equipped with a special anti-gravity flight system that allows them to fly for long periods of time (being originally built for space travel), an autopilot mode, armed with missiles for defense and can endure being struck by lightning. The machines are also capable of fighting even while one of them is damaged, [21:07] and in the middle of being combined or separated as shown when Musashi used Getter 1’s legs. [9:29]
Getter Web
An attack in which the three Getter Machines separate and assume a triangle formation, creating an electric net to trap flying enemies.
Getter Machine Machine Guns
Machine guns installed in front of the Getter Machines. The rate of fire is very high and the ammo doesn’t seem to run out.
Getter Tomahawk
The most iconic part of Getter Robo’s arsenal. A powerful one handed hatchet that comes out of Getter's shoulders. Can be dual wielded. It’s extremely sharp and cuts through Mechasaurus like butter.
Tomahawk Boomerang
Getter can throw the Getter Tomahawk at enemies, and even spam them. The Tomahawks will come back to its hand. There doesn’t seem to be a limit to how many Tomahawks it can produce.
Getter Wing
A cape that allows Getter 1 to fly at incredible speeds. Can also be used as a shield to protect it from damage.
Getter Beam
Getter Robo’s signature attack. A concentrated beam of Getter Rays fired from Getter 1’s torso. Can be fired from underneath the Getter Wing at multiple directions. While it is made out of radiation in the manga, the exact nature of Getter Rays isn’t consistent among the various Getter incarnations.
Getter Kick
A powerful drop kick delivered by Getter 1. Since Ryoma is in control, one can assume it’s a karate kick... Somewhat. Hey, over 200 tons dropping on your head works either way.
Getter Double Kick
A variation of the Getter Kick executed from underneath. It reaches ludicrous altitudes.
Getter Missile Gatling Gun
A giant chain gun created by Doctor Shikishima that fires explosive missiles instead of bullets. Rate of fire is high and the area of effect of each missile is wide.
Getter Ray Collection Machine
A device Getter Robo can use to collect Getter Rays from the environment and fire a powerful blast. The resulting beam is stated to be more powerful than a hydrogen bomb and completely annihilated a mountain.
Radiation Neutralizing Device
Small device that forms a protective barrier against radiation. The barrier seems to affect Getter’s entire body.
Getter Drill
Getter 2’s main weapon, a powerful spinning drill that can be used to pierce enemies or dig underground at high speeds.
Drill Punch
The Getter Drill can be fired as a rocket to attack enemies at a distance. The high speed rotation paired with the rocket propulsion gives it incredible penetration power.
Rocket Drill
The Getter Drill can be fired as a rocket to attack enemies at a distance (again).
Drill Storm
The Getter Drill can be used to spin so fast it creates a small hurricane that sweeps away foes. The hurricane can be expanded to have a large area of effect.
Eye Beams
Smaller Getter Beams emitted from Getter 2’s eyes. They are made out of Getter Rays as well.
Getter Heat Shield
A protective barrier that protects the Getter against extreme heat. It’s an invisible force field that covers the Getter’s entire body.
Getter Cannon
A Getter Beam fired from Getter 2’s claw hand. Since it has the same color as the Getter Beam, it can be assumed to be made out of Getter Rays as well.
Getter Jump
Getter 2 can jump incredible heights using the flaps on its feet. It reaches hundreds of meters into the air.
Getter Reverse Jump
An airborne Getter Jump variation. It was used to dodge a mechasaurus’ diving attack and jump on its back.
Getter Vision
Getter 2 can massively increase its speed and run around an enemy, creating several afterimages.
Getter Mach
A massive boost on running speed for Getter 2. It seemingly needs a headstart for it to activate properly.
Getter Smash
A powerful hand chop delivered by Getter 3. Uses Musashi’s martial arts expertise.
Getter Throw
Getter 3 can toss an enemy backwards through massive distances. It’s based on a judo technique called “Ura-Nage”, or literally, “Back Throw”.
Daisetsuzan Oroshi
Based on Musashi’s signature technique, Getter 3 grabs the enemy before spinning them around and throwing them away with a modified hammer throw. In Armageddon, this attack creates a wind storm which tears enemies apart. Musashi learned this technique while training Mount Daisetsu, hence the name.
Daisetsuzan Oroshi Punch
Getter 3 punches the enemy really hard while extending its arm. Another technique developed from Musashi’s martial arts skills.
Ganseki Oroshi
Getter 3 can crush enemies beneath it by landing on them while falling down from a high distance, as shown once when Musashi deployed parachutes to hover in midair before dropping Getter 3 on Mechasaurus Buzz to finish them once its saw blades cut them.
Getter Missile
Getter 3’s main ranged attack, missiles fired from its shoulders that pack an incredible punch.
Jet Pack
A device that allows Getter 3 to fly. It’s only used once.
Electromagnetic Beams
Electromagnetic radiation beams that can disrupt or distract mechanical enemies or disrupt their circuits completely.
Getter Robo G
Getter G Machines
The Getter Machines (Ryoma’s Dragon, Hayato’s Liger and Benkei’s Poseidon units) which surpass their original predecessors in size, speed and firepower. They are also armed with various unique weaponry as shown below and much easier to use as Benkei was able to effortlessly pilot the Poseidon in the manga with minimal training.
Extinguisher Capsules
Small bombs dropped from the Getter Machines that carry extinguisher fluid to help stop fires.
Dragon Missiles
The Dragon Machine can fire missiles.
Liger Missiles
The Liger Machine can fire missiles.
G Machine Machine Guns
Front machine guns that are more powerful than that of the original Getter Machines. Rate of fire seems to have been maintained. They’re usually employed in coordinated attacks.
Mach Wing
An improved version of the Getter Wing, now with a more aerodynamic design that allows for even greater flight speeds.
Getter Beam
The new and improved Getter Beam, fired now from Getter Dragon’s forehead (Ultraseven reference???).
Double Getter Tomahawk
The new and improved Getter Tomahawk. Now with two edges and an added spiked head at the top.
Long Tomahawk
The new Getter Tomahawk can extend its hilt to become longer, serving as a two handed battle-axe.
Double Tomahawk Boomerang
The Double Tomahawk can also be thrown like a boomerang.
Spin Cutter
The blades on Getter Dragon's forearms are not just for show, they are also deadly spinning saws that can cut enemies apart. They seem to be made of the same material as the Getter Tomahawks, and cut through enemy mecha like nothing.
Getter Wiper
A strange ability with unclear purpose.
Dragon Kick
A powerful Rider Kick executed by the Getter Dragon.
Shine Spark
Getter Robo G’s most devastating power. After absorbing enough solar power, the Dragon is imbued with incredible energy, and flies at the enemy at high speeds. At the last moment, the Getter curves away and lets the energy go straight and blast the enemy. Physics be damned, believe in Getter.
Drill Arm
The new and improved Getter Drill. Does the same things as before but better.
Rocket Drill
Like previously, the Getter Drill can be fired like a missile to destroy enemies at a distance.
Chain Attack
Getter Liger has a chain that can be used to GET OVER HERE enemies with the Getter Drill, or simply restrain or strangle them.
Drill Missiles
Getter Liger can fire several missiles from inside its drill arm.
Liger Mach
Boosts Getter Liger’s speed massively. Works similarly to Getter 2’s speed boosts but in the air as well.
Liger Kick
Another Rider Kick, performed by Getter Liger instead.
Strong Missiles
More powerful variants of the Getter Missiles, fired from Getter Poseidon's backpack. The rockets are much larger, and of course, more powerful.
Finger Net
A net fired from Getter Poseidon's hands that can snare enemies. Once inside the net, the enemies can be swinged around and smashed against surfaces violently.
Getter Cyclone
A fan that opens around the base of Getter Poseidon’s head, used to fire a sharp burst of air at the enemy to send them flying back. Becomes more deadly when used underwater.
Shin Getter Robo
Shin Get Machines
Three jet-like vehicle units (Go’s Shin Eagle, Tahir’s Shin Jaguar and Ryoma’s Shin Bear) that can combine into Shin Getter Robo and like the two previous Getter Machines, are armed with missiles and can fly at significantly faster speeds.
Getter Razor
Razors that emerge from Getter’s arms that can cut through large enemies like butter.
Getter Battle Wing
Shin Getter’s version of the Getter Wing, taking the form of bat wings. Allows for greater speed and maneuverability, and also makes the Getter fly in an UFO pattern.
Getter Tomahawk
This thing is too big to be called a Tomahawk. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it is more like a 55 meter long poleaxe. Shin Getter can send a slash of green energy, which is likely a Getter Ray, from the blade of the tomahawk.
Getter Scythe
The Getter Tomahawk can morph its blade into a Scythe for added cool factor.
Getter Lancer
The Getter Tomahawk can morph its blade into a lance that's capable of impaling through the Invader with ease.
Tomahawk Boomerang
Much like its predecessors, Shin Getter is capable of throwing its Getter Tomahawk like a boomerang as it slashes through enemies and returns back to it.
Tomahawk Lancer
Shin Getter releases its tomahawks out of its release ports and throws them in rapid succession in a straight line.
Getter Blast Cannon
A powerful handheld energy beam machine gun.
Shin Getter Beam
Shin Getter's version of the iconic Getter Beam, more powerful than ever. In Armageddon, it has the ability to turn its own direction to chase the enemy and have an added effect of devolving the target, or even force them to over-evolve until they explode to death.
Stoner Sunshine
Shin Getter Robo’s most powerful attack. A massive ball of Getter Energy that can cause explosions several hundreds of kilometers wide. Despite being a pure Getter energy construct, it needs to be physically tossed like a hadouken.
Shin Getter Drill
Shin Getter 2’s version of the Getter Drill. Still follows the same function, with a design improved for higher penetration. Size has also obviously been increased.
Drill Missile
Like its predecessor, the Shin Getter Drill can also be fired like a missile as a ranged attack option.
Drill Hurricane
Shin Getter 2 spins its drill at increased speeds, causing even higher damage; they’re imbued with Getter Ray, which added power of devolving the enemy, or force them over-evolving until they explode to death.
Plasma Drill Hurricane
Shin Getter 2 performs a Drill Hurricane while empowering it with plasma energy, creating a huge vortex from its arm with much stronger force.
Getter Crash
Shin Getter 3 does a powerful full-body tackle attack as it charges towards the opponent and punches them.
Getter Missile
Powerful missiles stored on Shin Getter 3’s shoulder mounted rocket launchers. In Armageddon, they’re powered by Getter Ray, which adds the power of devolving enemies, or force them to over-evolving until they explode to death.
Missile Storm
Dozens of missiles fired from Shin Getter 3’s… rear. Spammable like Macross missiles.
Daisetsuzan Oroshi
A classic technique passed down from the original Getter 3 pilot. Shin Getter 3 wraps the enemy with its arms, extends them and spins both arms and torso, violently tossing the enemy away.
Energy Beams
In the manga, Shin Getter can fire Getter Energy beams from its hands when awakened. They’re obviously also made out of Getter Rays.
Assimilation
In a bizarre Lovecraftian fashion, Shin Getter Robo can absorb and assimilate matter. Objects, machines, people, the Getter can just eat them and grow in power and size. When a living being gets assimilated by the Getter, they don't die, as their consciousness is absorbed into Getter’s own and shown the secrets of the universe.
Energy Absorption
The Shin Getter can endlessly absorb energy from enemy attacks to power itself, including nukes, electricity, enemies themselves and enough matter to become visible from space.
Telepathy and Mind Manipulation
The Shin Getter can project itself in people’s minds and talk to them through its consciousness. [pg 25 to 29]
Getter Emperor
Getter Emperor Machines
Three large starships that are capable of combining into Getter Emperor and equipped with extremely potent Getter Beams that are powerful enough to vaporize entire planets in an instant, and a Getter Energy Barrier which is immune to most attacks from a group of battleships. They can also absorb planets when getting near them and devour space itself.
Getter Beam
The most devastating version of the Getter Beam, fired from the Emperor's mouth. Can vaporize entire fleets, moons and planets. It has a range of millions of lightyears.
Getter Energy Barrier
A large force field that surrounds the Emperor and protects it from damage. Entire planetary forces just get destroyed by trying to ram through it. It is also invisible.
Emperor Tomahawk
The largest Getter Tomahawk, surpassing the Emperor itself in length. It only appears in the Soul Chogokin Getter Emperor Figure and is wielded by the Will of the Universe in Getter Robo Devolution. Since the Will of the Universe is merely copying Getter Emperor in context, it’s fair to assume the real Emperor has a Tomahawk.
Absorption
Just like Shin Getter Robo, the Emperor can absorb and assimilate, but on a planetary scale. The Emperor has also been stated to devour space itself. Devouring all of space is likely how the Emperor will end the universe.
Space-Time Manipulation
Emperor can destroy and create rifts leading to different places in time and space. It used this ability to send Getter Arc back to its own time [19:00].
Time Travel
Getter Emperor can travel to the past or the present at will [4:42]. It is unknown how this ability works or what are its limitations.
Evolution
Getter Emperor is constantly evolving and growing in power and size, and will not stop until the end of the universe as long as humanity still exists.
Transformations
Mazinger Z
Photon-Powered Mazinger Z (Debatable)
Upon Dr. Hell activating Infinity’s Goragon with the backup of Great Mazinger’s activation code on his Bardos scepter, LiSA uses herself as a key in the adjacent dimension to grant Koji a power equivalent to that of Infinity’s by transmuting photonic energy into matter, [1:18:38 to 1:18:58 & 1:21:21 to 1:21:35] increasing Mazinger Z’s size to be as big as his opponent (who is gigantic enough to be hidden beneath Mount Fuji) while covering him in golden energy. [1:20:28 to 1:20:47] This also empowers Mazinger’s attacks significantly as shown when his Breast Fire clashes with Infinity’s Breast Inferno that can reduce whole cities into molten slag, [31:30] and increases his temperature to 10^-10 K. [1:20:56 to 1:21:11]
However, Infinity slowly started to push on Mazinger, and so LiSA called everyone on the Earth to give all of its photonic energy to Koji, further increasing his power all the way to 5.67 billion%. [1:22:40 to 1:25:00] This allowed Mazinger Z to destroy Infinity with an extremely powerful Rocket Punch that sent him flying out of the planet and blowing it up in a massive explosion (basically the Spirit Bomb, but a huge steel fist), finally ending Dr. Hell’s reign of evil, once and for all. [1:25:06 to 1:25:48]
Mazin Powers Awaken-Mazinger Z
With the activation of the Black Boxes, Mazinger gains several new abilities and a significant increase in power. This is best exemplified with the activation of the Fifth Black Box: Metamorphosis. With it, Mazinger gains the ability to morph its appearance and create new weapons and appendages, altering the shape of its arms and the scrander. After the Fifth, the Sixth Black Box grants Mazinger the power to predict and select a desirable outcome based on high dimension prediction, even if it has an infinitesimal chance of happening. With the final Black Box, Mazinger turns into Mazinger ZERO, retaining all the previous Mazin Powers and gaining frightening new adaptation and absorption powers, in addition to going berserk.
God Mazinger ZERO
After devouring enough space-times, Mazinger ZERO surpassed the singularity point of God and became a sort of deity himself. In this state, Mazinger is composed of all space-times created from the diverging timelines. He is also past, present and future, omnipresent through time. Because of this, ZERO’s victory became inevitable, and any attempted change to the timeline to try to change it was moot. After all separate space-times were joined together, God Mazinger ZERO created a perfect world for himself, showing he could warp reality to his will. This is proven as Tetsuya Tsurugi is completely erased from existence because he was an anomaly to the story ZERO wanted to tell, only coming back because of Koji Kabuto.
Light of Possibility
Powered by the Mosaic Photon Engine created by Koji, this Mazinger lacks the Seven Black Boxes and by consequence their Mazin Powers. It has new abilities, however, like space-time transportation, as it could escape from Mazinger ZERO’s body, which was an entire timeline composed of several others merged into one. It isn’t lacking in the firepower department either, as it could hurt God Mazinger ZERO. It also had the power to give life to the Souls of Steel, beings composed of Photon Power that are created by channeling the imagination of people still living inside ZERO’s world.
Z-Chan
Yes.
Getter Robo
God Getter
Upon pushing the Getter Rays to its limits, Shin Getter Robo will evolve into a more dangerous dark navy blue form as it increases in tremendous size and recovers its previously torn arm, used to effortlessly defeat the empowered Emperor Gore who previously overpowered it. This transformation makes the robot physically more powerful and durable than before, able to cause explosions with its blows and withstand being in the center of an explosion that destroys an alien ship.
Get-Chan
Yes.
Support
Mazinger Z
True Mazinger Army
Mazinger Z and Koji have the ability to summon thousands of phantom Koji and Mazinger Zs from the parallel world. Every summoned Mazinger has an appearance that’s identical to Z’s base form, and their capabilities are similar to him as well, able to use Rocket Punch, Breast Fire and fly with Jet Scrander. Due to being phantoms, they can’t be physically harmed, but at the same time, their Rocket Punch can’t physically interact with anything either. However, Koji can use his Airborne Elemental Condenser, which has its power amplified by the Star of Aztec to materialize these phantoms into metal coated Rocket Punches, which turned into Super Alloy Z Rocket Punch by everyone’s feelings. These thousands of Rocket Punches can push the gigantic Gordon Hell into space in a short timeframe. The thousands of phantom Mazinger Zs can also surround their enemy, and fire their Breast Fire in unison with enough energy to equal that of a supernova and create an explosion bigger than the Earth itself.
Souls of Steel
After escaping from ZERO’s world, Koji used the power of the mosaic Photon Power Engine to call forth the Souls of Steel from countless people’s imagination within ZERO’s world. These Souls of Steel appears to be the masses of photon, the light of possibility that take forms of variety of giant robots from various media, which includes Grendizer, Getter Robo, original Jeeg, original Raideen, Voltes V, Combattler V, RX-78-2 Gundam, Zambot 3, Daitarn 3, Daimos, Baldios, Ideon, VF-1 Valkyrie, Scope Dog, Dragonar-1, Layzner, Orguss, original Dancougar, Gunbuster, EVA-01 (Unknown version), Raijin-Oh, Gaogaigar, Gaiking (Unknown version), Gurren Lagann, Gipsy Danger, Yu Brain, XG-70 Susanoo, and likely more. These Souls of Steel are outside of ZERO’s understanding, which caused ZERO’s attacks to be ineffective against them, but on the other hand, every Soul of Steel possesses enough power to break out of God Mazinger ZERO’s body by themselves and all of them have a finishing blow that has enough power to damage even God Mazinger ZERO.
Getter Robo
Getter Armada
A fleet of massive starships that resemble Getter Machines and generally accompany the Emperor. Like their leader, each of them are equipped with various weaponry such as Getter Beams and Getter Energy Barriers they can form within themselves to protect personnel, but also have proton cannons that annihilate cities and a Dark Death Cannon, which is capable of corroding entire planets into nothingness. They can also create clones of Getter pilots via Emperor’s memories.
Resistances
Mazinger Z
Manga
Toei
Extreme Heat/Fire: Mazinger Z can withstand Glen Ghost C3’s thermo disc that heats up to 10,000 degrees, his own Breast Fire heating up at close range, Minerva X’s own, Apollo A1’s fire and Elephans γ3's heat ray which can melt buildings, and Viscount Pygman’s fire that melts rock into lava. He also only had his paintjob burned off after being blasted by Doublas M2’s beam, which melted a palace in under a minute.
After being repaired with Super Alloy New Z, Mazinger Z should be as resistant as Great Mazinger, who withstood being submerged in lava, blasted by Solgos’ fire that overpowered his own Breast Burn and took sustained fire, which is about 40,000 degrees Celsius.
Electricity: Mazinger Z can withstand being blasted by Jinrai S1’s 2 million volt lightning, which knocked him into a building hard enough to destroy it, shocked by Mechanical Beasts including Wainder A2, who caused Aphrodite A to go haywire with electricity, and Goliath W3’s electrified whip strikes/blasts. With Super Alloy New Z, he should scale to Great Mazinger, who was hit by his own Thunder Break reflected back at him, which is a discharge of 3 million volts.
Koji himself withstood Aphrodite A channeling all her electricity into Mazinger Z, being shocked by Balmos Q7 and Harkenschmitt X9, and was alright after being struck by lightning.
Minor Cold: Koji can endure taking a direct hit from Blowgun G3's cold ray after the Hover Pilder's windshield was broken, which earlier froze stone pillars to the point of shattering.
Acid/Corrosion: Mazinger Z can withstand Ozones B3’s acid, which ate through Aphrodite A’s legs, and his own Rust Hurricane being turned back on him. With Super Alloy New Z, he should scale to Great Mazinger, who was unaffected by Pilanis’ acid scales which previously ate through him.
Sound Manipulation: Mazinger Z took Gerberos J3’s heat ray/soundwave combo attack that blew up a building, and separately destroyed large oil pipes and a ship.
Plasma Manipulation: With Super Alloy New Z, Mazinger Z should be as resistant as Great Mazinger, who was blasted by Battlers’ 10,000 degree plasma cutter.
Mazinkaiser
Extreme Heat/Fire: Mazinkaiser took a direct hit from Ashura Mazinger’s Koshiryoku Beam [20:49], took Great Mazinger’s Breast Burn (although Great at that time was heavily damaged, causing him to be unable to use his power to the fullest) [2:44], took a direct hit from Dam Dam L2’s laser cannon, remained completely fine from being submerged in magma, [4:23 to 5:45] and was completely unharmed from being dropped to the Earth from space. [41:48 to 44:00]
Mazinger Z was unaffected by being in flames. [3:50]
Great Mazinger, who was heavily damaged at that time, survived from holding Mazinkaiser’s heat sinks when he was about to shoot Fire Blaster.
Boss, Nuke, Mucha, and Boss Borot’s wreckage survived from Fire Blaster.
Acid/Corrosion: Mazinkaiser should be as resistant as the “true” Great Mazinger that was built by Juzo, who can take a direct hit from Mazinkaiser's Rust Tornado, which corroded a General class Battle Beast like Caesar, who should be comparable if not superior to a Battle Beast that can withstand Vayon Beta’s Rust Hurricane.
Electricity: Mazinkaiser is completely unscratched from being electrocuted by powerful electricity from Hell King Gordon’s Finger Shock [21:45], which blows away the ground around him, and also withstand the electricity that is released from Hell King Gordon’s sword, which channels the power from cloud lightning, although Kaiser Pilder control panel was greatly damaged.
Aphrodite A and Boss Borot, were shocked by Stronger T4 and remained completely fine. [6:42]
Great Mazinger was shocked by Bardon B7. [9:02]
Great Mazinger’s Thunder Break couldn’t do a scratch to Mechanical Beasts, such as Garada K7 [18:22], Abdullah U6 and Ginrai S1 [13:37 to 13:58], though Great at that time wasn’t fully repaired yet, causing him to be unable to use his power to the fullest.
Great Mazinger’s Atomic Punch wasn’t damaged by Ginrai S1’s electric shock, even at that time, Great Mazinger wasn't fully repaired yet. [15:58]
Shin Mazinger
Extreme Heat/Fire: Mazinger Z tanked Hyper Heat Beam, which was stated to be equal to his own Breast Fire [11:03], which itself can melt away entire Mechanical Beasts and metal [16:48]. He has also shown to be resistant to fire. [11:02]
Cold: Even after Mazinger Z was frozen by Danube α1, Koji can keep fighting against her. [19:50 to 20:58]
ZERO
Sound Manipulation: Z withstood a direct hit from Valgus V5’s ultrasonic wave cannon. As Mazinger ZERO, he's superior to Great Mazinger, who's unaffected by Battle Beast’s ultrasonic wave, which can weaken the structure of Z’s Super Alloy Z.
Radiation Manipulation: Z fought with Gordon Hell in the area outside of Photon Barrier, which was contaminated with radiation from the nuclear missile during the Great Mazin War.
Durability Negation (internal attack): Z’s body, from the internal frame to the smallest screw, and even Hover Pilder's control levers, are pure Super Alloy Z.
Technology Manipulation: The Staff of Bardos' control over AI has no effect on machines with a Photon Power Engine.
Plasma Manipulation: After unleashing his 1st Mazin Power, Regeneration, Z can withstand being electrocuted by Gordon Hell’s Finger Shock, an attack which produces massive and super-intense plasma. Later on, after unleashing 2nd Mazin Power, Absorption, he completely withstood Gordon Hell’s Finger Shock, which forced Dr. Hell to use an even more powerful version of Finger Shock called Finger Shock Extension. After the unleashing of Finger Shock Extension, Z also unleashes the 3rd Black Box, Enhancement, as well, which causes Gordon Hell’s Finger Shock Extension to be unaffected against him.
Air Manipulation: After unleashing the 3rd Mazin Power, Enhancement, Z can withstand the Gordon Hell’s attack, Gordon Cyclone, which releases a gigantic violent tornado that could tear up towns and cities under its feet. As Mazinger ZERO, he's able to take a direct hit from Great Mazinkaiser’s Great Tornado, which is an even more powerful version of Great Typhoon.
Fire/Extreme Heat: Mazinger Z can withstand Ghost Fire’s flame, his own point-blank range Breast Fire, Gordon Hell’s super-charged lasers, and the heat of the wreckage of Gordon Hell, which was previously cooked by the heat of supernova. After unleashing the 3rd Mazin Power, Enhancement, Z can withstand the Gordon Hell’s attack, Cyclone Fire, which releases a gigantic hellish and fiery cyclone that should be superior to the heat of base Z's Breast Fire, due to Z having no chance to win against Gordon Hell without unleashing Mazin Powers. With his Mazin Powers, Regeneration, Absorption, Enhancement and Metamorphosis unleashed while under ZERO’s control, he can withstand Great Mazinger’s Breast Burn Up, which overpowered his Breast Fire.
As Mazinger ZERO, he's undoubtedly far superior to Great Mazinger, who's seemingly unharmed from his long range Breast Fire, which is more powerful than Z’s Dynamic Fire Nova. He can also take a direct hit from Great Mazinkaiser’s Great Blaster and emerge from lava, remaining unscratched.
Acid/Corrosion: Koji stated that Super Alloy Z has surpassed the concept of normal metal, which should make it immune to corrosion.
As Mazinger ZERO, he's superior to Great Mazinger, who's unharmed from his Rust Tornado, which corroded Mt. Fuji with acidic wind to the point that it completely turns into dust.
Electricity: As Mazinger ZERO, he can take a direct hit from Great Mazinkaiser's God Thunder, an even more powerful version of Thunder Break, which causes a gigantic spark on the Earth’s surface that can be clearly seen from space.
Existence Erasure/Memory Manipulation/Mind Manipulation: Mazinger Z escaped from the ZERO’s control over his world, which allows him to cause Koji’s memories to be foggy, erase the existence of Tetsuya, and force everyone to think that he’ll only win.
Grendizer U
Extreme Heat: Mazinger Z survived being close to a Saucer Beast while blowing it up with his Breast Fire. [18:45 to 18:55]

Radiation: Mazinger X can function fine in outer space without any issues.
Getter Robo
Manga
Extreme Heat: Getter 1 took a direct hit from the magma cannon, probably scraping it off with Getter 2. [pg 23 to 27] It was also unaffected by heat powerful enough to set a forest ablaze.
Electricity: The Getter Machines survived being struck by a lightning storm. Getter 1 withstood being shocked by 10,000 volts of electricity. [pg 20 to 21 & pg 72 to 73]
Toei
Extreme Heat: Getter 1 survived being hit directly with a lava eruption, resisted lava for a minute to save the city [18:27 & 20:24], and endured Gii [19:47] & Zori’s magma breaths [16:47 to 19:26]. Getter 2 is coated in a heat shield that allows it to burrow through magma [8:14], able to stay under for a while [10:37]. Getter 3 survived being hit by magma bubbles [16:06].
Minor Cold: Getter 1 struggled against being frozen by Mechasaurus Bedo at extremely low temperatures to the point it nearly left it unmovable [15:43].
Electricity: Getter Poseidon withstood being hit by Mecha Denkoki’s lightning strike [20:25 to 21:07].
Armageddon
Biological Manipulation: Getter Robos use Getter Ray as their main source of power without any issues at all. Getter Ray is an energy that came from space, which is able to devolve or accelerate the evolution of lifeforms. Being exposed to Getter Rays can cause one to over-evolve and explode into tiny pieces, as seen when the Invader over-evolves and explodes after taking a direct hit from Shin Getter 3’s missile, which is powered by Getter Ray.
Radiation: Every form of Shin Getter can operate in space without any issues.
Extreme Cold: Shin Getter has no issues from having to operate in the North Pole at all, Shin Getter 2 even submerged into the water under the ice without any problems.
Extreme Heat: Black Getter only gets its paint scratched from atmospheric re-entry, and Shin Getter is capable of achieving an even more superior feat, as seen when it was being hit by its own Stoner Sunshine, causing it to fling from the near Ganymede back to Earth in few seconds, and it re-emerged again with Shin Dragon, remaining completely fine.
Gravity Manipulation: Shin Getter was unaffected at all from being near the Getter Ray Sun, with its gravity being powerful enough to drag the nearby planets into it, and causing it to almost form up into a black hole.

Scaling
Mazinger Z
Doctor Hell and Mechanical Beasts
“I've come to make an announcement: Koji Kabuto's a bitch-ass motherfucker, he pissed on fucking Baron Ashura. That's right, he took his photon mazin dick out and he pissed on fucking Baron Ashura, and he said his dick was "THIS BIG!" and I said "that's disgusting!" so I'm making a callout post on my Twitter.com: Koji Kabuto, you've got a small dick. It's the size of this Hover Pilder except WAY smaller.”
The main villain that opposes Mazinger Z and Koji Kabuto’s Number 1 hater. Doctor Wily’s grandpa here constantly sends out his army of Mechanical Beasts to do the fighting for him, and Mazinger Z triumphs over every single one of them. With all things said, scaling Z to all things the Beasts can perform is valid and straightforward.
Few Mechanical Beasts can dodge and react to Mazinger Z’s photon beams, such as Serpenter Ι6 who cut it, and Ashura P1 who split themselves to evade it - (1.44c) (Toei)
Doublas M2 is stated by Baron Ashura to be able to destroy the Tokyo Tower at full power - (25.5 to 122.5 tons of TNT) (Manga)
Garada K7’s scythe is stated to be able to cut the entire isle of Bardos in half [2:50] - (9.9 to 88.18 kilotons of TNT) (Toei)
Doublas M2’s beam is stated to be able to melt the Bardos Underground Empire base in less than a minute [3:10] - (3 to 3.8 megatons of TNT) (Toei)
Garadaba MK01 activated Mount Fuji, filling it with magma. [23:15] - (4.74 gigatons) (Mazinkaiser OVA)
Great Mazinger
The Great Mazinger initially was much stronger than the Mazinger Z, as seen in his fight against Grantonios and Biranius, who easily defeated Mazinger Z, Diana A and others, and were one-shotted by the Great Mazinger. However, later down the road in both anime and manga continuities, Mazinger Z was rebuilt, and it was upgraded to the same level of power and durability of Great Mazinger. Not only do they blatantly scale from this point forward, it just proves how much the upgrade is more powerful than the original robot.
Great Mazinger dodged beams from Battlers that are described as electromagnetic [6:33 & 2:21] - (1.07c) (Toei)
UFO Robo Grendizer
As honorary members of the Mazinger family, alien robot Grendizer and its pilot Duke Fleed are also parts of the canon of the Mazinger universe. In the movie UFO Robo Grendizer vs Great Mazinger (an official crossover made by Toei and acknowledged in the Mazinger 40th anniversary guidebook as part of the Mazinger series, with no contradictory events to the Grendizer anime), and in a chapter of the Grendizer manga by Go Nagai, Grendizer is forced to do battle with Great Mazinger. In the movie, Duke fights Great Mazinger and shows a similar level of strength [15:21-20:48]. In a previous chapter of the same manga Grendizer also fights Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger at the same time, and Duke thinks they're fully capable of killing him. Since Mazinger Z by the end of the Great Mazinger anime and manga was rebuilt and upgraded to the same level of power and durability of Great Mazinger, it's natural a scaling chain to Grendizer exists and is valid. In Grendizer U, Mazinger Z is upgraded into Mazinger X, and fought against King Gori, who was equipped to fight against Grendizer, before ending up fighting the Fleed’s guardian itself when Duke went berserk as a result of his wrath consuming him following Rubina’s death.
Grendizer was undamaged after being caught in the outskirts of the Dark Star’s explosion, an asteroid stated to be 1.5x size of the moon [21:07 & 8:44] - (64 petatons of TNT) (Toei)
Grendizer survived being caught in the outskirts of Gudogudo's Vegatron bomb, which’s explosion sank an island the size of Tokyo [22:09 & 1:45] - (2 gigatons of TNT) (Toei)
Grendizer was capable of harming and knocking down King Gori with punches, who was capable of damaging tearing off his arm [17:07 & 1:45]
While berserk, Grendizer destroyed Planet Fleed with its weapons. [14:05 to 14:31] (Grendizer U)
Grendizer’s Screw Crusher Punch destroyed the Vega stronghold’s lethal cannon, which was stated to have been used for destroying planets. [10:09 & 6:53] (Grendizer U)
Being created as a weapon by God beyond Fleed’s technological capacity [17:28 to 17:47], Grendizer should be superior to Naida’s proton bomb that destroyed Daridari, which is stated to be able to blow up the Earth. [21:22 to 21:50 & 16:02] (Grendizer U)
It was stated by Maria that Fleedians’ technology can make interstellar trips and control gravity, with Professor Umon saying they cannot be compared with Earth’s weapons. [6:51 to 6:55 & 10:57 to 11:02]
Grendizer’s Spazer was measured to have the power of 170 trillion joules, its energy being compared to that of a star and part of the robot’s. [3:50 to 3:57] (Grendizer U)
Aphrodite, Venus and Diana A
Robots piloted by the hero’s partner. Sayaka pilots Aphrodite A, which has been shown to be on par with Mazinger Z after being equipped to take on the same Mechanical Beasts it fights. Venus A has also been shown to be on par with Great Mazinger, which was superior to the original Mazinger Z at the time. Once Mazinger Z got its upgrades, it was shown to be on the same level as Great Mazinger. With all of this in mind, we can scale Mazinger Z to the Robot Girls.
Aphrodite A’s Oppai Missile could generate a large explosion - (13.8 tons of TNT) (Manga)
Aphrodite A’s punch is said to be able to smash mountains twice - (796 kilotons to 10 megatons of TNT) (Manga)
Sayaka’s Venus A destroys a Mechanical Beast with her Koshiryoku Beam and Z Cutter. [pg 09 to 10] (Manga)
Jun’s Venus A can fight enemies that can deflect her Photon Beams. (Toei)
Boss Borot
A robot piloted by Boss. Its capabilities are far lesser than that of Mazinger Z’s due to being made of leftover parts and scrap metal but it can hold its own against some Mechanical Beasts. Mazinger Z should undoubtedly scale to the Boss due to its natural superiority over it.
Boss Borot destroys Gulasos, a Battle Beast, with his mace and Borot Spin Kick. [17:26 to 17:37] (Toei)
Great soccer player. [59:57]
After being hypnotized by Gambina M5, Boss Borot was capable of beating down Mazinger Z and even arm-locking him from behind.
Boss Borot took blows from Chickeron N9, who ran through a large stone formation and buildings.
Boss Borot punched chunks out of buildings. (High Outerversal+)
Energer Z
The prototype for Mazinger Z. Developed by Juzo Kabuto, Energer Z possesses fighting capabilities similar to that of Mazinger Z’s but lacks some of the support Mazinger has access to. Professor Kabuto even acknowledges Energer Z as being inferior to Mazinger in every conceivable way in ZERO. This makes scaling Mazinger to Energer to be a very simple thing.
Energer Z drops onto earth and delivers a massive explosion that destroys Hatsushima [21:12] - (15 to 186 kilotons of TNT) (Shin)
Energer Z’s generator can generate enough power to supply all of Japan for a week in an instant. - (15 megatons of TNT) (ZERO)
Zeus
Zeus is one of the three Great Gods and made peace with the humans who live on the Earth. Zeus is a crucial part to Mazinger Z as the God’s arm was used as a component to enhance Mazinger’s fighting capabilities. Since Mazinger possesses the power of Zeus with the God Scrander (it's literally made out of his hand), he should scale to the big Z himself.
Zeus fought Hades, who causes a fire explosion that covers the island of Bardos [10:04 & 12:30] - (1.14 gigatons of TNT)
He can sink the island of Bardos into the ocean with his fist alone. [2:21]
Infinity (Debatable)
An ancient, giant Mazin found in an excavation beneath Mount Fuji. It is the main MacGuffin of the Mazinger Z: Infinity movie, and performs absurdly impressive feats once Doctor Hell manages to take full control of it. Since it is portrayed as on par with the Photon Powered state of Toei Mazinger Z, only that form should scale to Infinity. Check the Before the Verdicts section to know about the standardness of that form.
Infinity forms a giant tornado over Mount Fuji while emerging from Goragon’s core in the middle of it. [28:08 to 30:00]
Infinity’s Breast Inferno destroys the entire city and side of Mount Fuji. [31:30 to 31:56]
Infinity’s Goragon shrinks a whole space at the center of it, making it capable of reshaping the universe [49:59 to 50:11] - (Universal) (146 quadrillions c)
Upon activating its Goragon, Infinity took control of the adjacent dimension which is full of boxes that contain seeds of potential universes inside them, and made its space unstable. [1:15:40 to 1:16:48 & 1:18:49] - (Low Multiversal)
Getter Robo
Dinosaur Empire
The main villains of the original Getter Robo. Led by Emperor Gore, this pack of prehistoric punks are constantly terrorizing humanity with their abilities until Getter comes in to stop their plans. With how often they are fought and how often Getter triumphs over them, we should be able to scale them to the best Dinosaur Empire has to offer.
A Mechasaurus created a thunderstorm and several tornadoes over a small city - (348 kilotons to 1.74 megatons of TNT) (Manga)
Mechasaurus Ribo can create earthquakes and fissures by moving underground [3:05] (Toei)
Mechasaurus Geru destroys a space station with missiles [14:58] (Toei)
Mechasaurus Geru flies from Earth to space [14:45] (Toei)
Mechasaurus Gii drilled to the surface from the Dinosaur Empire base [14:42] - (30.15 megatons of TNT) (Toei)
Mechasaurus Gora can fly at Mach 10 [2:31] (Toei)
Mechasaurus Bamu sunk a mountain with its Typhoon [1:45] (Toei)
Hyakki Empire
The antagonists of Getter Robo G, the sequel series to Getter Robo. As the main antagonists, they would have their plans constantly foiled by the newer Getter Robo model. Getter Robo G mostly physically overpowers the mecha sent by Emperor Burai, and thus should upscale the technology of the Hyakki Empire.
A Hyakki Empire mecha with weather powers moved a massive storm above a small island [6:16] - (49 megatons of TNT) (Toei)
Getter Robo Go and the Allied Robot Corps
A new kind of Getter Robo that was spearheaded by Hayato and Tachibana years after the Hyakki Empire’s defeat. Getter Robo Go is a bit different from the usual Getter Robos as it runs on Plasma Energy. It is portrayed as being on par with its peers of the Super Robot army and as vastly inferior to Shin Getter Robo, meaning they should scale.
Shin Dragon
A mutation of the Getter Robo G after absorbing an enormous quantity of Getter Rays and evolving into a higher being. We don’t know much about the Shin Dragon but it is heavily implied its evolution plays a role into the formation of the Emperor in the future. Since it is by all means in its larval state when it performs its only notable feat, Getter Emperor should upscale it.
Shin Dragon upon awakening stopped a falling ship that would blow away the surface of the planet - (183 to 646 petatons of TNT) (Manga)
B.U.G
The BIOGEOCENOSIS UNLIMITED GENOCIDEMACHINE. A giant robot that was the Andromeda Country’s super weapon. In Arc, it was able to tear apart Getter Arc’s arm and its developer says that if it was fully completed, it can wipe out a whole army of Getters. It fought a hard battle but ultimately lost to Shin Dragon, meaning Getter Emperor should be at least comparable to its full potential.
Professor Han says it can reshape the Earth, possibly the whole universe. [18:19]
BUG is stated to have the power to wipe out humanity and remake the planet.
Will of the Universe
The Will of the Universe is a being born in the far future that wants to destroy humanity in the past to stop an event from occurring. It is theorized that it wants to stop the Getter Emperor from being born. As it is defeated by a devolved Getter Emperor, Emperor himself should scale to it.
Texas Mack
Texas Mack is a robot from America that was initially made to test its capabilities against Getter Robo and manages to defeat both Getters 1 and 2 in battle. It also manages to beat the 1st Mechasaurus but needed Getter 3’s help in order to beat the 2nd one that came in. In Shin vs Neo, the two robots team up to fight against the Dinosaur Empire, with Mack being portrayed as inferior. With this, we can reasonably scale Getter Robo to Texas Mack in both the continuities.
Texas Mack grabbed Mechasaurus Gora while it's going at Mach 10 [19:29] (Toei)
Texas Mack intercepted meteors [13:20], which destroyed a military base and caused extensive damage in Washington D.C. (Shin vs Neo)
Texas Mack destroyed a satellite that was 33,000 km from its position. (67 megatons) (Shin vs Neo)
Weaknesses
Mazinger Z
Koji can be reckless when piloting Mazinger, which can often lead him into more trouble than he’d like. His Pilders are also incredibly crucial in operating Mazinger Z to begin with and it can be a weak point to target those directly. And if any of Mazinger’s parts are badly damaged enough, it can render some techniques unusable. Mazinger ZERO is also incredibly easy to anger, which can be problematic for Koji to deal with.
Getter Robo
In order for Getter Robo to even happen, all 3 Getter Machines must be present and available and in the event even just 1 of them is gone, neither of its combinations can happen. This severely limits what Team Getter can do, and it extends to Shin Getter’s Stoner Sunshine technique as it requires all 3 pilots to perform. If one of the three pilots is absent, Getter Machines will be unable to draw out its full potential despite containing an autopilot mode.

Before the Verdicts
Lightspeed beams
I hope someone gets the joke. -Flip
Both of these robots have easily dealt with beams that can travel at lightspeed, making it very easy for both to scale to the speed of light and beyond. For Mazinger, every iteration of it has it being powered by Photon Power, which is made up of… photons and is utilized in some of its attacks like the aptly named Photon Beam. The Photon Beam is also shown to emit heat in Mazinkaiser and Toei, showing more light properties in those continuities outside of the obvious. Mazinger Z has been able to dodge beams from Rood R2, who utilizes solar energy in his attacks and a guidebook calls it a “beam of light”. Since Mazinger Z is also comparable to Great Mazinger, he should also scale to the time it was able to dodge electromagnetic waves, which obviously also travel at the speed of light. Mazinkaiser’s version of the Koshiryoku Beam has even been stated to move at the speed of light and has kept up with enemies who can react to it as well. Koji was also able to dodge photon beams as well while piloting his Kaiser Pilder. In all, lightspeed is very consistent for most versions of Mazinger Z.
For Getter, the Getter Poseidon formation was able to dodge beams called x-rays in Getter Robo G, which are obviously also lightspeed. Ryoma himself thinks that Shin Getter 1 can reach the speed of light, especially when he also believes that mach speeds are nothing to it. Getter Emperor has also been shown to fire off its Getter Beam attack at the speed of light and throw out punches while it’s the size of a galaxy. Musashi also believes that Getter Emperor being 30 lightyears away and still considers it as nearby, possibly adds support that it can move at those kinds of speeds.
In the manga, classic Getter does dodge a Getter Beam. Since Getter Rays are stated to be a form of radiation, one could infer they travel at the speed of light. However, there’s no tandem movement shown, so it’s impossible to determine if Getter Robo aim dodged or not.
Crossovers
Both Mazinger Z and Getter Robo have been a part of some crossover series during their runs, namely Devilman, Super Robot Wars and each other, funnily enough. These crossovers are not being factored into the verdict for the simple reason that all of the crossovers present inconsistencies that stop them from being included in their respective canon.
Starting off by tackling Super Robot Wars, these series of video games have always been non-canon for all the franchises involved, including Mazinger and Getter so they’re not being utilized here (and it’d be a hell of a chore to watch 100+ mecha anime with varying episode counts). Super Robot Wars has its own set of continuities and timelines that make it an original verse and as thus we shouldn't focus on it as the objective of the blog is to look into Mazinger Z and Getter Robo’s own material. Curiously, Mazinkaiser’s origins are directly tied to Super Robot Wars, as it was designed by Go Nagai as a version of Toei Mazinger Z mutated by Getter Rays. But since that’s its own can of worms, we decided to use the versions of Kaiser that follow their own separate stories and are more in line with the Mazinger mythos.
Next off is Devilman. The movie “Mazinger Z vs Devilman” features both titular characters from their Toei continuity. The biggest problem with this crossover is that it creates an obvious problem and begs the question: why don’t the characters appear in or acknowledge the events of each other’s series more times? In both Mazinger Z and Devilman, giant monsters attack Japanese cities all the time and cause widespread destruction, so why is this never brought up? Professor Yumi sends Mazinger to investigate problems such as weird sightings in nearby lakes, so why are none of the many demon cases ever brought up in Mazinger Z? Similarly, the manga “Devilman vs Getter Robo” is another case of this and it is also non canon to either. If Getter Robo was supposed to fit in the Devilman manga, the Getter team would obviously be sent to fight the dozens of demons that appear causing destruction in Tokyo. Great Mazinger does appear in the manga “Devilman vs Hades”, and has a direct universal feat (what???). However, that manga belongs to its own continuity as one of Devilman’s numerous cycles and does not feature the original Mazinger, and as such is not relevant to this blog as it’s not scalable to any version of Mazinger Z.
Lastly, there’s the crossovers with each other in both the manga and Toei continuities, which just falls under the same case as the two Devilman crossovers. It makes no sense for the Dinosaur Empire or the Hyakki Empire to never be brought up in any Mazinger series if they’re supposed to be set in the same universe considering the scale of destruction they cause. Doctor Hell and the Mycenae are a similar case, as Doctor Saotome would just not ignore that they exist and are stirring so much trouble by trying to take over the world. Shin Getter Robo vs Mazinkaiser is another case where the story is self-contained and contradicts Mazinkaiser’s origins in both his own manga and OVA, thus being unusable because of that outside of the previously mentioned storyline inconsistencies.
Mazinger ZERO parallel space-time feats
In the manga Shin Mazinger ZERO, we’re introduced to the concept of multiple possibilities leading to different timelines in Mazinger Z for the first time, effectively introducing the concept of parallel realities to the franchise. Naturally, this led to Mazinger ZERO, who in his most powerful states, had quite a lot of interactions with multiple timelines. This led to a lot of feats in the multiversal range. Let’s go over how they work and talk about their validity.
Let’s first establish how timelines work. In this story, doctor Juzo Kabuto had found a way to transfer his knowledge to the past with Photon energy using Minerva X. This led to a time loop in which he would constantly make Mazinger Z stronger with future knowledge before his death. As Mazinger became stronger, it also became more dangerous. WIth the creation of the Seven Black Boxes, ZERO was born and destroyed the world. Thanks to that, the loop became an effort of Minerva X to try and stop Mazinger Z from becoming ZERO. This ultimately failed multiple times. These attempts are called “Cycles” and by the end of the first manga there are over two thousand of them.
By the end of the first manga, we’re also introduced to the parallel universe Mazingers that appear thanks to the awakening of the 6th Black Box. We’re told different universes are all just different possibilities as Mazingers from different cycles come to aid Koji in his final battle against Doctor Hell.
The mention of parallel space-times specifically comes much later. As a borderline insane Koji tries to make sense of the cycle, he mentions that each attempt is actually a parallel space time, each always consumed by ZERO by the end. This is confirmed when ZERO’s assistant (who looks exactly like Koji) shows the truth: every parallel space-time is already simultaneously being dominated by ZERO, as he had already “surpassed the singularity point of God”. As the past and the present are shown to Koji, it’s directly stated ZERO is already present in every point of all timelines, as they all compose a mosaic of his body, indicating very clearly that God Mazinger ZERO is composed of several different space-times.
We’re shown pretty damning evidence that they are treated as a sort of multiverse when ZERO’s assistant shows every space-time in a white room, each represented by a computer server. Koji decides the best course of action would be condensing all of them in a single one, and so the assistant does so with a swirl of his finger. This is important as it should solidly be considered a multiversal feat. Not only are the parallel realities outright stated to be “space-times” (a model that fuses all of space and time into a four-dimensional continuum, ergo more than just the matter or space of the entire universe), but there’s also direct mention of there being thousands of them (considering each space-time represents one cycle, the assistant’s mentions of Koji having attempted to defeat ZERO “millions of times” indicates there’s potentially much, MUCH more). Considering God Mazinger ZERO is outright composed of these space-times, and the fact that a being lesser than him (his assistant, that directly calls him an almighty god) is capable of merging all these universes and timelines, it’s not unreasonable to say this is a multiversal feat ranging from thousands to millions of times universal.
In terms of speed, this feat should also be viable. The merging of thousands to millions of universes happens with the swirl of a finger indicates that at least one would have to be crossed or moved in a second or so, with results reaching at least quintillions of times the speed of light. That’s for extremely low balled finite results however, as the fact that so many fabrics of time are being merged together would certainly indicate that entire timelines containing past present and future are being joined. This would likely be a feat of Infinite or Immeasurable speed. Bear in mind that God Mazinger ZERO is outright MADE of these space-times, meaning he’s present in the very fabric of time of many several universes, adding consistency to infinite interpretations.
A bit later in the story we learn that Koji’s decision to merge all timelines was manifested when ZERO absorbed them and formed a perfect universe inside himself. This indicates that the feat performed by the assistant can be replicated by ZERO himself and is obviously scalable. After Koji and Tetsuya escape ZERO’s world, they use the creativity of the people inside that world to manifest the Souls of Steel and defeat ZERO once and for all. This means that the final stages of Mazinger Z (Light of Possibility) and Great Mazinger scale to the previously mentioned stats too.
In short, Mazinger ZERO and Mazinger Z in their strongest states in the Shin Mazinger ZERO manga solidly scale to thousands, possibly millions of times universal, and at least quintillions time of times the speed of light to likely infinite/immeasurable.
Getter Robo Devolution parallel universes
Getter Robo Devolution: The Last 3 Minutes of the Universe is a manga created by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi. It is, in the same vein as Shin Mazinger ZERO, an alternate take on the classic Getter Robo manga. In it, we’re introduced to the concept of parallel worlds for the first time in the franchise, and in consequence we’re also shown a really complicated plot of alternate universes and virtual realities. In this section, we’ll try to explain what happens in Devolution and how it affects Getter Emperor’s power.
Early into the story, Professor Saotome talks to Ryoma about the existence of parallel universes. He goes on to explain that in these numerous parallel worlds, every single one has a history with the Getter. Not only that, but the Getter trio and himself also exist in these worlds. Sounds like a pretty normal application of a multiverse, right? Well…let’s continue for a bit. When learning more about the parallel worlds, Hayato learns that something called the Getter Emperor destroyed multiple universes, one by one.
Turns out after all, the Getter the trio pilots in this is a miniature Emperor. Later, as it’s explained, the Getter Emperor always reaches a point in evolution where it destroys the universe, but something called the “Fragment of the Emperor” is sent to a past parallel world and accumulates memories from all of them. According to Hayato, “as if it was trying to correct something”. Doctor Saotome’s goal appears to be to use the memories from these past worlds to control the Getter’s Evolution to stop the creation of the Emperor and the end of the universe, as the Getter the trio pilots in this manga is a miniature Emperor itself (hence, Devolution).
All is well until we’re hit by a sudden revelation: the universes are not actually real. According to Professor Shikishima, all the worlds in Getter Robo Devolution are simply virtual worlds in Getter’s head. Up to that point, over 900 million simulations were made, all to use collected data to forcibly make Getter Robo evolve in the real world. Curiously enough, the simulated versions of professor Saotome also started running simulations inside simulations in order to study the Getter Emperor, with the same goal of finding methods to control Getter’s evolution in order to rebel and prevent the fate of the universe being wiped out.
This is not to say the simulation worlds can’t intersect with the real world, although probably not in a way you’re expecting. In one of the simulations, a version of Ryoma detonated his Getter core alongside his Fragment of the Emperor, ending his universe and having a side effect of being transported to reality. This happened because, in order to use the information from the dead virtual universes, the real Getter Robo had to be evolved through overloading and assimilating the memories of the simulated worlds to itself. As that simulated Getter had grown a conscience and integrated its pilots into its memories, the real Getter evolved and brought about the data from so many cycles to reality, including the pilots. These younger pilots would later join the fight against the threat that the real world was facing.
We later learn that the Emperor which the characters of this manga oppose is not exactly the Getter, but a Clone Getter being emanated by the Creators, an ancient race of aliens that created the Getter Rays and the first lifeforms to inhabit the universe. This Clone Emperor, the Will of The Universe, is the true villain of the manga, a being born in the far future that, for unknown reasons, is bent on eradicating the humans of the past and preventing future events from occurring. Hayato theorizes that it seeks to stop the Emperor from being born. As the Getter team defeats the Will, a new universe is born.
With all this explained, you might come to the conclusion that the multiverse in Getter Devolution is not something that exists. However, if we go back to professor Shikishima’s explanation of the Creators, he very clearly states that the vision of the Will of the Universe “exists between this dimension and another one”. Since the death of the Will of the Universe also transports the younger Getter Team to a new universe, it’s not a stretch to say multiple parallel worlds also exist for real in Getter Robo Devolution.
But after all, should the Getter in Devolution scale to the parallel worlds that are present in the story? Ultimately, no. Not only is it made very clear that each virtual world is destroyed one by one, but that the data accumulated by the many retries in the cycle is simply fabricated memories that were intended to create an evolutionary impulse, and not a gradual accumulation of power. This is supported by the fact that Ryoma destroying his Fragment of Emperor merely destroys his own universe, and nothing else. In no moment of the story is it indicated that the Getter or the Will of the Universe can affect or scale more than one reality at a time, rendering multiversal scaling in Getter Devolution impossible to justify.
At best, if you assume Getter Rays exist in every universe in real life, you can scale the Creators to them. But there’s no way to prove that each dimension doesn’t have its own creators, as they’re clearly referred to as forming the neural link of the universe and not the multiverse.
TL;DR: a multiverse exists in Getter Robo Devolution, but it is impossible to scale it to the Getter or any character in the series.
Is the Photon-Powered Mazinger standard?
Short answer: no, it’s definitely not standard. But since this is a VS blog, and we wanna be a great one at that, we can’t leave it with just a simple answer, so we shall explain right now for those who haven’t seen the movie. In Mazinger Z: Infinity, we are shown the highest AP arguments in the entirety of the Toei continuity, with possible universal and multiversal ends, so in a sense, this would be Toei’s Mazinger Z’s peak.
Unfortunately, this form is only accessible with the help of the Rei Ayanami wannabe called LiSA, aka Large Intelligence System Agent [0:13:21]. She’s introduced to us at the very start of the movie [0:07:00], just after Koji detects a life sign coming from Infinity [0:06:33]. She comes out of the giant mechanical beast completely naked, with her first words being “Goragon” before fading out. As the movie continues, it explains to us that she is a 91% organic AI (wtf?) human-sized gynoid [0:13:30 to 0:14:23], and is Infinity’s main control unit [0:13:16].
How TF is she organic?
After Dr. Hell takes control of Infinity in the movie, he activates Goragon [1:15:24], which is Infinity’s ultimate weapon and power, and has the ability of reshaping the universe by making space shrinks at the mech’s center [0:49:56].
The dangers of Goragon
With it’s activation, both Koji and LiSA enter an adjacent dimension where everything and nothing are there at the same time, where lives the core of Infinity [1:16:06]. In this same dimension, we see it’s filled with cubes that represent potential universes, and with the activation of Goragon, they are all under control of Infinity [1:16:30 to 1:16:46]. When Koji is back from the dimension, she uses herself as a key to give Mazinger the same power as Infinity, via transmuting photonic energy into matter, and it results in giving us the giant and OP Photon-Powered Mazinger. It still needed more power from the other Photon-powered machines and, after the fight ended, the amp disappeared, returning us to the normal Mazinger Z [1:18:35 to 1:26:18]. Since LiSA is tied to Infinity’s existence and disappears after Koji defeats Hell [1:26:32 to 1:27:37], it’s self explanatory why he can’t access this transformation normally.
It doesn’t matter so much in the grand scheme of things, since ZERO’s feats are way more relevant than anything this transformation can do. Oh, the movie also confirms both indirectly and directly that LiSA was actually Koji and Sakaya’s future daughter all this time [1:16:56 to 1:17:50, 1:19:58 to 1:20:13, 1:26:32 to 1:27:37 and 1:30:37 to 1:31:26]. What a mind boggling character. Great movie tho, watch it.
Verdict
The time has finally come to determine who is the most super between these two robots. With how expansive their arsenals are, there’s a lot to talk about so we’re gonna try something a little different. We are going to compare each of their many robots to see how they stack up against one another, with of course the big winner being decided by the strongest iterations of the characters.
Classic Mechs (Mazinger Z VS Getter Robo)
What better way to start than with the machines that started it all? When comparing the stats of the two, while exclusively looking at the manga makes it seem that Getter has the upper hand, when throwing the anime into the mix, it’s Mazinger Z that takes power with relative ease. The best the Getter gang can compare to in the anime is the time they beat the Mechasaurus Gii, who drilled from the Dinosaur Emperor base to the surface, which has a yield of around 30 megatons. In comparison, Mazinger Z blowing up a part of Hell’s Island with its own photon beam has a yield of 235 megatons, making it nearly 8 times stronger than the Getter Robo in their original anime shows. And this feat was before ol’ papa Z was upgraded with Super New Alloy Z, so it could match the Great Mazinger. That means Mazinger would scale to Grendizer, reaching 64 petatons in power and durability. Classic Getter Robo in the manga downscales Getter Robo G by 10x, which means it can scale to a tenth of his 4.88 teratons feat, or 488 gigatons. While this would put Getter Robo ahead of Mazinger without the upgrade if you don’t use the Toei anime, Mazinger would still take power and durability by a lot.
When it comes to speed, both can pretty easily jet past mach speeds. Getter was able to cut apart missiles that were flying at sub-relativistic speeds and it was even capable of blocking a Getter Beam, that being said it is a little difficult to tell if it was aim-dodged or not. Mazinger Z was able to dodge the Rood R2’s heat beams, which uses stored solar energy for its attack and thanks to the upgrade making it comparable to Great Mazinger, he should scale to the time it dodged an electromagnetic beam. And when it comes to how tough both of these robots are, they should both be well within their paygrade. Overall, Mazinger Z should have the edge in stats when you analyze their classic versions in both manga and anime.
Stats aren’t everything though, as the abilities they have is just as important. Both are packed to the brim with powerful melee attacks, explosives, sharp weapons and energy beams and Getter’s unique ability to change formations gives it some flexibility on the way it can fight but Mazinger is packing the deadlier abilities between the two, specifically the Breast Fire and Rust Hurricane. The Breast Fire’s temperature of 30,000 degrees Celsius far exceeds the heat resistance that the Getter can withstand, meaning one direct blast from that would melt it completely. Rust Hurricane’s ability to corrode any metal it comes in contact with is a huge advantage as Getter Robo has not shown resistance to such an ability, meaning it would be very dangerous for it to get hit by and would allow for Mazinger to finish the job. Mazinger should have abilities in his favor and it should be a straightforward win for the big Z. Point goes to Mazinger.
New Mechs: Round 1 (Mazinkaiser VS Getter Robo G)
With new mechs comes a new discussion and that’s comparing the Mazinkaiser against the Getter Robo G. As a good starting point, Getter Robo G was stated to be ten times stronger than the original Getter, so it should already get bigger numbers when compared to its predecessor. With that extra jump, Toei Getter’ Robo G’s AP and durability are raised to 300 megatons which is nothing to scoff at, but Mazinkaiser’s best AP feat gets a yield of 113 gigatons and puts it far ahead of G in the anime. However, once we factor that Getter Robo G has a 4.8 teratons durability feat in the manga, things change a bit, with Getter taking power and durability by 43x. Speed is a lot closer with both robots being light timers. Mazinkaiser can fight foes who can react to his lightspeed Koshiryoku Beam and Koji can even react to photon beams while piloting his Kaiser Pilder. Meanwhile, G’s Getter Poseidon formation was able to dodge beams called x-rays, so it’s safe to say both are pretty even in speed. This leads to abilities being the deciding factor here, which one again isn’t a good sign for the Getter. Since Mazinkaiser has the Rust Tornado, it has a very solid means of ignoring the AP gap. Since it also has a very wide AOE, it’s very likely Getter would get caught by it and corrode instantly. Since it’s more in character for Koji to open with Rust Tornado than for the Getter Team to open with one of its large AOE attacks like the Shine Spark, we think it’s fair to say that Mazinkaiser is more likely to win the quickdraw, hence why he’ll get another point for Mazinger for this round, although it’s still likely a tossup.
New Mechs: Round 2 (Mazinkaiser VS Shin Getter Robo)
But how does the Kaiser fare against the Shin Getter? This time, not super great. Shin Getter Robo’s power output manages to exceed that of Mazinkaiser’s, much like its predecessor. Absorbing all the energy of a weapon that would not only consume the North Pole but throw off the Earth’s rotation is a feat worth 51 exatons, far outmatching anything the Mazinkaiser can survive. It’s also pretty reasonable to assume that it has the speed to keep and deal the single hit it needs to thrash Mazinkaiser, given that Ryoma himself believes it can reach lightspeed itself. This is pretty reasonable given that Shin Getter was able to fly from Earth to Mars in seconds, the calculation of which gets a result of about 20 times the speed of light. And to take things even further, Shin Getter was able to survive getting hit by its own Stoner Sunshine technique twice, which had a power output of 84 zettatons, ultimately meaning that thanks to its better speed and overwhelming power and durability, Shin Getter Robo scores a point for the Getter Team as they beat the Mazinkaiser.
Reboot Mechs (Shin Mazinger Z VS New Getter Robo)
This one is super clear cut. Being the reboot versions of the original robots, they don’t scale to them, forcing them to rely on their own feats. Unfortunately for Mazinger, he gets outdone hard here.
Shin Mazinger should scale to the lower end of island level with 1.14 gigatons via Hades’ feat. This is extremely low compared to New Getter’s scaling which gets to a whopping 97.79 yottatons of TNT for overpowering a god that destroyed a moon. Getter is AP stomping hard here.
This wouldn’t mean it’s over for other Mazingers, however, as speed is still important. Rust Hurricane is still guaranteed to work if it hits. So can Mazinger pull it off? Uhh… no. Getter scales to solid sub-relativistic speeds at 0.03c, while Mazinger scales to… nothing comparable in the slightest. Shin Mazinger is one of the only Mazingers that has no feat or scaling to moving in tandem to Photon Beams, which means it can’t scratch Getter’s speed. Maybe it flying up to space could get decent speeds but the angle and perspective make it very difficult to calculate, outside of the obvious fact that it wouldn’t get sub-relativistic. New Getter Robo scores the point here for the Getter Team.
Final Mechs (Mazinger ZERO VS Getter Emperor)
Now for the big deciding factor: who wins when both are at their very strongest? Ironically, this is the most simple verdict of them all: There’s ultimately no going around it that ZERO has the Emperor beat by a landslide.
The Getter Emperor is easily capable of busting stars and galaxies. It’s even capable of consuming the universe and this kind of power is very consistent for the Getter Emperor, as you might have noticed by its hilarious amount of Universal statements. In the meantime, ZERO’s messenger was able to merge at least a thousand of parallel realities into one with just a swirl of his finger, with the likely implication of there even being millions of said parallel realities. God Mazinger ZERO even possesses those timelines as a part of him if that wasn’t crazy enough. Anyway you slice it, ZERO greatly eclipses the Emperor in sheer power.
As for speed, merging all those timelines should safely get the ZERO to speeds of 1.4 quintillion times the speed of light, possibly even in the immeasurable range. Regardless of the end used, it far eclipses the Getter Emperor’s speed of 700 billion times the speed of light from throwing out a punch while the size of a galaxy.
And as far as abilities go, both possess the unique ability to absorb power and evolve throughout the fight, while also possessing much stronger variants of their attacks. ZERO’s version of the Rust Hurricane isn’t exactly something Getter Emperor has dealt with and the same goes for the Breast Fire. The Getter Emperor does possess the ability to time travel, so it does have the means of using the knowledge it gathered and take it to the past to attack a weaker Mazinger but the large stat disadvantage would make it difficult for it to pull off. Even if such an opportunity opens up, Mazinger’s Higher Dimension Predictability and Causality Weapon ensure that Koji will find the means to break through and pick a desired outcome. This is also ignoring that God ZERO has his own form of time manipulation and can just counter any attempt regardless, as God ZERO is simply fated to exist for surpassing the singularity point of God, rendering changes in the past futile as there are countless other ZEROs creating the immutable future. With such a large gap in stats and hax, ZERO should solidly triumph over the Emperor by any metric and score the final, and deciding point to Mazinger.
Tertiary Factors
(Bro, poor Char)
Both Koji and Team Getter are each incredibly skilled pilots in their own rights, with many years of experience under their belts. While Koji initially began struggling with piloting Mazinger Z at the start, he quickly caught the hang of it and underwent the necessary training to become the best possible pilot for Mazinger Z, which included improving his experience in hand to hand combat, marksmanship and piloting. Koji is quick to adapt to whatever situation he’s faced with, such as fighting when Mazinger is badly damaged or when faced with a numerical disadvantage, and Koji has been the only person to solve the mosaic Photon Power engine, something that not even God Mazinger ZERO could do. He’d soon go on to become a scientist much like his father and grandfather before him and he would still take the duty of defending Japan after many years have passed.
The same goes for Team Getter as Getter Robo needed suitable pilots to make the most of its capabilities. Ryoma was the first pilot chosen to be worthy of piloting Getter and he acts as the combat expert of his team, being an experienced black belt in karate and having beaten many dojo masters in combat. He’s also the Getter pilot with the most experience under his belt, having been a key member in many of the Getter Robo manga and anime adaptations. The second Getter pilot is Hayato, who is no slouch in combat either and he’s got the intelligence to back it up, with an IQ of 300 since elementary school making him the brains of the team. He’s always quick to think of a strategy to use against his foes and to use his own abilities and tools to his advantage. Even when he retired as a pilot, Hayato still grew to become an incredible scientist for the Saotome Institute. And lastly there’s Musashi, who initially wasn’t chosen to be a Getter pilot but he still more than proved himself during his time. His experience in survival and judo made him a perfect fit for Getter 3’s focus on grappling and close quarters fighting. And of course, Musashi’s sacrifice was an act of bravery that was also his strongest point. Getter would have several pilots take the place of members throughout the series.
Getter Emperor itself is over a million years old and has assimilated many living beings throughout, gathering their knowledge and intelligence throughout such as advanced alien civilizations. And Ryoma is suggested to be the main pilot that Getter draws its consciousness from as well, suggesting that Getter Emperor bases its plans and actions off of him. Both sides are just incredibly good at what they do though the Emperor having existed for a very long time does give it a lead in experience.
Summary
Mazinger Z
Advantages:
Wins the matchup in most of it’s iterations thanks to stats or abilities such as Rust Hurricane
Fought opponents with similar abilities as Getter Robo’s (Crocodiver O1, Deimos F3 and Belgas V5)
ZERO outmatches Emperor in stats and hax
Better abilities that no version of Getter could resist, such as reality warping, precognition and probability manipulation
Go Nagai
Got married…
Disadvantages:
Pilders are still a weak point
Mazinkaiser loses to Shin Getter Robo
Shin Mazinger Z loses to New Getter Robo
Mazinger Z could potentially beat Getter Robo if we restrict it to the classic mangas’ feats (lame decision tho)
…only after his future daughter came into AI form to say they were being stupid for not confessing
Getter Robo
Advantages:
Formations allow for different fighting styles
Shin Getter Robo beats Mazinkaiser
New Getter Robo beats Shin Mazinger Z
If restricted to the classic mangas’ counterparts alone, without any anime, Getter Robo could potentially beat Mazinger Z (lame decision tho)
Ken Ishikawa (and Go Nagai)
Disadvantages:
Getter cannot be formed if a machine is missing
Loses in most versions
Emperor is outmatched by ZERO in stats
Isn’t resistant to several abilities Mazinger has
Musashi died (RIP to the GOAT)
Conclusion
Getter Robo puts up an incredible fight as the one and only worthy rival to Mazinger Z, but the demon god machine has what it takes to win in the most important fights. Not only does Mazinger win when analyzing their classic and most iconic versions, but he also wins when taking both robots at their very strongest.
Analyzing a soft composited matchup between these characters is not easy, but we think it’s fair to say that the winner should be decided when looking at the characters at their best, which is fitting for both series (specially considering the Getter saga being all about evolution). With ZERO being the peak of Mazinger Z, Mazinger certainly has more than enough to beat any Getter Robo at their most powerful. Getter may win a handful of battles, but its chances of winning the Super Robot Wars are ZERO.
The winners are Koji Kabuto and the father of super robots, Mazinger Z.
Final Tally
Mazinger Z (8) - Kaiser (actual vote), Strunton, Minniez, Mau, Mikhael, Ed, Flip, Tony
Getter Robo (3) - Kaiser, Serge, Marilon (they still believe in Getter)

Wow this took quite some time, didn’t it? This blog was announced almost 3 months ago. Who would have guessed that researching such old and long-running franchises would be so much work? Thankfully, we had a team of very dedicated people that made it happen.
First off, I’d like to thank Minniez and Mau for their massive contributions. Minniez was a big help with Mazinger ZERO, providing scans and links to a lot of content we didn’t know about, effectively doing 90% of the research on the blog’s big winner. This is also their first contribution to a blog ever, which makes it even more impressive. Mau, on the other hand, has been solo researching Getter Robo for several months before the matchup was even announced. Every single piece of media from Getter Robo that we used was researched by him, so big thanks to Mau as well. Another newcomer we got this time is Tony, who also helped with getting clips and gifs here. To Tony: big thanks and welcome! Of course, the other participants were super important too, so big thanks to Ed, Flip, Mikhael, Strunton, Marilon and Serge for making this blog possible and greatly contributing to this group effort.
I’d also like to thank a few Respect Thread authors for giving us easy access to some clips that we used. We still verified every feat to see if it checked out of course, but having a pre-made Imgur link for feats doesn’t hurt. Big thanks to AzureBeast for his respect threads on Toei Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and Grendizer. Big thanks to MostDangerousGeist too for his RTs on Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Shin Getter Robo and Getter Emperor, these Imgur links came in handy.
About the matchup itself, I hope we were able to do it justice. This is one of my favorite matchups of all time, featuring two of my all-time favorite franchises in my favorite genre, and I hope we could get across why it matters so much. Mazinger Z vs Getter is one of the most incredible legacies out of all anime matchups, and I’m so happy we could talk about it beyond just who wins. Of course, it is also my small tribute to the late Ken Ishikawa, whose work I hold very dearly.
(Rest in Peace, legend)
I hope that through this blog we could bring to light the extent of the influence and legacy of these two titans of anime and manga. It can’t be understated how special they are to me, so I think it would be cool if more people in this community were aware of the extent to which their favorite robots have the DNA of Getter and Mazinger, even if just a little. I mean, one of the biggest homages to mecha anime of all time, specifically for Getter Robo, made it to Death Battle in one of the most requested episodes of all time. I think this at least means there’s space for these characters, so maybe learning about their roots and the history of their native medium can be a fun experiment to the people that came to this without much knowledge on mecha.
The matchup for next time was originally supposed to be another of my favorite matchups, a lengthy one at that, but I realized in the middle of this blog’s production that going into it after such a big blog would just be asking for a burnout. We opted for something else, so I hope you guys enjoy it. Until next time, thanks for reading!
I'm so glad with how this blog turned out in the end. Big thanks for letting me in one more time.
ReplyDeleteFor the first time in a blog, this was really exciting.
ReplyDeleteI think that we can argue that vanilla Z vs vanilla Getter are kind of equal. But Z's weaponry pulls him ahead and claim a clear victory.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a fundamental thing of Getter having to change between 3 forms to access all the weapons that Z has in base.
