Character Analysis: Tails

Background

Miles "Tails" Prower is an anthropomorphic fox who, due to a genetic abnormality, was born with two tails. Due to his abnormality, Tails was a victim of bullying during his youth. Rings

Ring-like objects that hold great power. Rings contain a unique form of energy known as Ring Energy, which can be used to power machines or rejuvenate someone’s stamina and abilities.

-Rings restore Sonic’s boost gauge in various games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OBe-rONR4&ab_channel=SonicJGB

In most Sonic games, rings are used to protect the user from a deadly blow. As long as the user has a ring on their person, the ring will protect them from nearly any attack. While this can be seen as a gameplay mechanic, there are a few instances throughout the series that could suggest that these are how rings operate in the Sonic universe. Whenever characters are hit by attacks, they lose the rings they are carrying and have to recollect them before they disappear.

-Various manuals and in-game descriptions state that rings protect the user from a deadly blow https://info.sonicretro.org/images/thumb/7/7a/Sonic1_MD_US_manual.pdf/page6-351px-Sonic1_MD_US_manual.pdf.jpg

-Rings are knocked out of Sonic when hit by Shadow in Sonic Prime. This would suggest that the rings are protecting him from Shadow’s attacks https://youtu.be/U9z39SZp7go?t=79

-Interestingly, rings are also knocked out of Sonic when he is attacked by The End in Sonic Frontiers, which would suggest that they are protecting him from its attack as well https://youtu.be/IfgG26pDjio?t=684

Ring Time

A power-up that turns nearby enemies into rings.

RC Vehicles

Remote-controlled devices Tails designed to aid Sonic in Sonic Lost World. The following are a list of RC Vehicles Tails created and their abilities:

  • Stealth Jet: Turns characters invisible to all enemies

  • Hovercraft: A vehicle that can be ride on to avoid obstacles

  • Balloon: Lifts characters into the air

  • UFO: Slows down jumps for more precise platforming

  • Omochao: Used to collect 1-Ups, Rings, and Item Boxes

Chaos Emeralds

A set of mystical objects that are said to grant near infinite power. Depending on the type of thoughts and motivations of their user, they will generate either positive or negative energy. Tails can use the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into a more powerful state called a “super form” (See Transformations).

Resistances

Additionally, Chaos Emeralds have been shown to be capable of protecting the user from certain abilities, like memory manipulation and transmutation.

Super Emeralds

Enhanced versions of the Chaos Emeralds. They have additional power due to drawing power from the Master Emerald. Tails can use the Super Emeralds to transform into a more powerful state called a “hyper form” (See Transformations).

Vehicles

The Tornado 2

A plane Tails created after his original biplane was shot down. It comes equipped with a missile launcher with an onboard targeting system and can fold its wings to transform into a jet plane, giving it a boost in speed and mobility.

The Cyclone

After the events of Sonic Adventure, Tails upgraded the Tornado 2 so it can transform into 2 different vehicles, with the first and most important one being a walker that he dubs the Cyclone.

The Cyclone comes equipped with an automatic targeting plasma cannon, a mini gun, a rocket launcher, and can fire a massive laser.

Car Mode

The second of the Tornado 2’s transformations is Car Mode. It’s a car. That’s it.

SS Tornado EX

A watercraft-esque like vessel used for dimensional travel.

Sea Fox

Tails’ remote robot can transform into his own personal submarine called the Sea Fox. The Sea Fox comes equipped with a front drill, vulcan gun, anti-air missiles, photon torpedoes, mines, and jet boosters. It can also electrify the water around the Sea Fox to destroy nearby enemies.

Skills & Abilities

Spin Attack and Dash

The Spin Attack is a jumping attack where Tails spins rapidly in the air to cut through objects and opponents. Tails can also perform a Spin Attack while rolling on the ground and can even charge up speed for such an attack with an ability called the Spin Dash.

Homing Attack

Tails performs a mid-air Spin Attack that homes in on opponents.

Flight

Tails has the ability to spin his two tails like helicopter blades, giving him the ability to fly. While most games have Tails tire out after flying for a few seconds, games like Tails’ Sky Patrol seem to suggest that he can fly for extremely long periods of time without getting exhausted. In Sonic 3, Tails was also able to carry Sonic from Marble Garden Zone all the way to Carnival Night.

Boost Mode

A state of enhanced speed in the Advanced series. In this mode, Tails moves fast enough to leave behind afterimages.

Dash Boost

An ability where Tails envelops himself in an aura and propels himself at higher speeds than normal, while acting as a sort of battering ram to enemies in front of him. A variation of this ability can be used in the air.

Tails Swipe

An attack where Tails performs a 360 degree spin and lashes out with his twin tails to damage enemies in front of him. There is a variant of this attack where Tails performs the Tail Swipe while in Boost Mode and one where he performs a chain of continuous Tails Swipes.

Insta-Shield

When performing Insta-Shield, Tails generates enough energy to create a temporary shield for a split-second that can slash enemies and items within their range without having to touch them

Tornado Attack

A technique where Tails swipes his tails with enough force to create a spinning tornado.

Chao Attack

An attack that makes a Chao home onto nearby enemies.

Parry

While guarding, Tails can use a spring to parry and deflect attacks. Tails has a variant of this skill called the Debuff Parry. With it, enemies will be afflicted with a status effect that will reduce its attack power for a short period of time.

Adrenaline Rush

Tails deploys a temporal field that boosts his speed and defense.

Tinker

A move where Tails sabotages robotic enemies, leaving them in a weakened or distracted state.

Wrench Attack

Tails attacks enemies by throwing an endless supply of wrenches at them. Said wrenches homes on enemies from a distance. There is a variant of this skill where Tails throws multiple wrenches that hover in midair for a few seconds.

Cyloop

A technique where Tails creates a light trail. Once he encloses said light trail, it can be used to launch enemies in the air or create rings.

Cyblaster

A ball of light Tails fires from his blaster that detonates upon impact.

Spike Stomp

Tails transforms his blaster into a pile bunker to launch a diving attack.

Intelligence

Tails is easily one of the smartest characters in the Sonic series, possessing an IQ of 300, and is often stated to have intellect rivaling that of Dr. Eggman. The following are a list of notable intellectual feats Tails has performed throughout the series:

Transformations

Hyper Mode

A super mode all characters can use in Sonic the Fighters. It enhances speed, strength, and allows for more powerful attacks.

Super Tails

The traditional Sonic super form. Tails can gain the use of this form after absorbing the power of all 7 chaos emeralds at once. In game, Tails typically requires 50 rings in addition to the chaos emeralds to start the transformation, and burns through said rings at a rate of one ring per second. While in this form, Tails’ physical abilities become greatly enhanced. Super forms are also described to be near invulnerable, although it is possible to harm them if the enemy is strong enough (i.e. Solaris, Dark Gaia, etc.)

Positive Energy Aura

Because super forms use the positive aspect of the Chaos Emeralds, Super Tails can pacify evil creatures by beating the evil out of them. Super Sonic used this to neutralize the negative energies of Perfect Chaos in Sonic Adventure.

Hyper Tails

(Artist: Nerkin)

An enhanced version of Super Tails that becomes available after upgrading the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds. The form has all the abilities of Super Tails, but enhanced. As Hyper Tails, Tails is surrounded by a group of birds known as Flickies.

Feats

  • Assisted Sonic in defeating Eggman and saving the world multiple times

  • Defeated Dr. Eggman in a one on one fight

  • Along with Sonic, saved South Island from sinking into the ocean

  • Defeated Witchcart and her army

  • Liberated Cocoa Island from the Battle Kukku Empire

  • Saved Station Square from a nuclear missile

  • Assisted in defeating Metal Overlord

  • Assisted Shadow the Hedgehog in defeating members of the Black Arms

  • Assisted Sonic in putting the Earth back together…twice

  • Is quite the ladies man

Strength

Speed

Durability

Scaling

Sonic the Hedgehog

Tails obviously scales to Sonic. While Sonic is the stronger of the two, Tails has fought characters that are equal to or stronger than Sonic, like Knuckles, Chaos, Metal Sonic, and Metal Overlord. So Tails should scale to anything his base form can do. Super Tails should also scale to anything Super Sonic can do, as both are powered by the 7 Chaos Emeralds. Not to mention, Classic Super Sonic is capable of defeating Time Eater, who obviously scales to Modern Super Sonic. Since Classic Tails’ super form is comparable to Classic Sonic’s, he would scale to Modern Super Sonic feats.

Shadow the Hedgehog

While Shadow is portrayed as being stronger than Tails, Tails has proven that he can hold his own against the Ultimate Lifeform in games like Sonic Heroes and Sonic Battle. Plus, Tails is on par with Sonic, who is Shadow’s rival, thereby making them scale.

Silver the Hedgehog

Tails and Silver fought each in Sonic Rivals 2, so Tails should scale to him.

Dr. Eggman

Eggman is a boss in nearly every Sonic game. Tails also defeated him in Sonic Adventure 2. He should obviously scale to Eggman.

Chaos Emeralds

Tails’ super form is powered by the Chaos Emeralds, so naturally, he should scale to its power.

Emerl

An ancient and powerful robot from Sonic Battle. Sonic, who Tails scales to, defeated Emerl after he had absorbed power from the Final Egg Blaster. Tails’ super form should also be more powerful than Emerl because it's powered by the chaos emeralds.

Master Core ABIS

The final boss of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. Tails assisted in defeating Master Core ABIS, so he would obviously scale to him.

Dark Gaia

The main villain of Sonic Unleashed, who is later fought and defeated by Super Sonic. Tails should scale to Dark Gaia with his super form.

Void

The main villain of Sonic Shuffle. He is one of the two halves of the Goddess of Dreams, Illumina. Tails assists in defeating Void, so he should scale to him.

Solaris

The final boss of Sonic 06. He is a super-dimensional lifeform and a god of time. Tails’ super form scales to Solaris because Super Sonic could break his armor and take hits from him.

The End

The main antagonist of Sonic Frontiers. It is an unknown entity that once wandered the universe with the sole intent of annihilating all life within it. In the game’s original ending, The End’s physical form was defeated and destroyed by Super Sonic, with Sage. Because Super Sonic was able to defeat The End, Tails should scale to it with his super form.

Weaknesses

Despite being a capable combatant, Tails sometimes lacks confidence in his own abilities and can be over reliant on Sonic (for example, when Sonic went missing for months, Tails was afraid to fight a clone of Chaos 0 in Sonic Forces despite being able to fight stronger forms of Chaos in Sonic Adventure). It is also implied that he has a fear of lightning.
